Access Grid: Immersive Group-to-Group Collaborative Visualization

Immersive projection displays have played an important role in enabling large-format virtual reality systems such as the CAVE and CAVE like devices and the various immersive desks and desktop-like displays. However, these devices have played a minor role so far in advancing the sense of immersion for conferencing systems. The Access Grid project led by Argonne is exploring the use of large-scale projection based systems as the basis for building room oriented collaboration and semi-immersive visualization systems. The authors believe these multi-projector systems will become common infrastructure in the future, largely based on their value for enabling group-to-group collaboration in an environment that can also support large-format projector based visualization. Creating a strong sense of immersion is an important goal for future collaboration technologies. Immersion in conferencing applications implies that the users can rely on natural sight and audio cues to facilitate interactions with participants at remote sites. The Access Grid is a low cost environment aimed primarily at supporting conferencing applications, but it also enables semi-immersive visualization and in particular, remote visualization. In this paper, they describe the current state of the Access Grid project and how it relates and compares to other environments. They also discuss augmentations to …

Analysis of Laser Tracker and Total Station Surveys (open access)

Analysis of Laser Tracker and Total Station Surveys

The SMX 4500 laser tracker has proven itself to be a beneficial addition to SLAC's set of alignment tools. Through actual field surveys and laboratory testing, a question regarding some unknown scale factor appearing after adjusting the combined tracker and total station results arose. Through a simple line survey and instrument analysis and then progressing through more and more rigorous network adjustments, the authors deduced that the apparent scale problem was in fact more likely attributed to wrong offset values introduced into the adjustment by mixing TC2002 total station data with the laser tracker measurements. A recalibration procedure of all of SLAC's total station prisms was designed and analyzed.

Certification of U.S. instrumentation in Russian nuclear processing facilities (open access)

Certification of U.S. instrumentation in Russian nuclear processing facilities

Agreements between the United States (U.S.) and the Russian Federation (R.F.) require the down-blending of highly enriched uranium (HEU) from dismantled Russian Federation nuclear weapons. The Blend Down Monitoring System (BDMS) was jointly developed by the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to continuously monitor the enrichments and flow rates in the HEU blending operations at the R.F. facilities. A significant requirement of the implementation of the BDMS equipment in R.F. facilities concerned the certification of the BDMS equipment for use in a Russian nuclear facility. This paper discusses the certification of the BDMS for installation in R.F. facilities, and summarizes the lessons learned from the process that can be applied to the installation of other U.S. equipment in Russian nuclear facilities.

Characteristics and Mechanisms in Ion-Conducting Polymer Films as Chemical Sensors (open access)

Characteristics and Mechanisms in Ion-Conducting Polymer Films as Chemical Sensors

Solid Polymer Electrolytes (SPE) are widely used in batteries and fuel cells because of the high ionic conductivity that can be achieved at room temperature. The ions are usually Li or protons, although other ions can be shown to conduct in these polymer films. There has been very little published work on SPE films used as chemical sensors. The authors have found that thin films of polymers like polyethylene oxide (PEO) are very sensitive to low concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as common solvents. Evidence of a new sensing mechanism involving the percolation of ions through narrow channels of amorphous polymer is presented. They present impedance spectroscopy of PEO films in the frequency range 0.0001 Hz to 1 MHz for different concentrations of VOCs and relative humidity. They find that the measurement frequency is important for distinguishing ionic conductivity from the double layer capacitance and the parasitic capacitance.

The CO/Pt(111) Puzzle (open access)

The CO/Pt(111) Puzzle

Notwithstanding half a dozen theoretical publications, well-converged density-functional calculations, whether based on a local or generalized-gradient exchange-correlation potential, whether all-electron or employing pseudopotentials underestimate CO's preference for low-coordination binding sites on Pt(111) and vicinals to it. For example, they imply that CO should prefer hollow- to atop-site adsorption on Pt(111), in apparent contradiction to a host of low temperature experimental studies.

Deliverable 2.4.4 -- Evaluation and single-well models for the demonstration wells, Class 1

Two single-well models were developed for Michelle Ute and Malnar Pike wells. The perforated intervals span thousands of feet in both the wells. Geological properties were calculated for all the perforated beds. The information was used to develop models for these two wells. These were comprehensive models since they took into account all the perforated beds.

Deliverable 3.1.4 -- Final reservoir report and field-scale models Bluebell Field, Utah, Class 1

The objective of this project were to: (1) Simulate parts of the reservoir using the conventional dual-porosity, dual-permeability approach, generate progressively complex reservoir models and use the production history match results to quantify formation damage; (2) Examine the effect of the numerical aspects such as grid sizes and fracture properties on the simulations results; (3) Evaluate the effect of fluid thermodynamic properties on production; and (4) Study effect of inclusion of fractures on variability in production from stochastically generated reservoir models.

Examination of Genetic Alterations in Preneoplastic and Neoplastic Lesions of the Lung From Uranium Miners. Final Technical Report (open access)

Examination of Genetic Alterations in Preneoplastic and Neoplastic Lesions of the Lung From Uranium Miners. Final Technical Report

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States and in Western Europe. The incidence of lung cancer in developing countries is rising as their cigarette smoking habits increase. The objectives of this proposed research are to analyze genetic alterations associated with the development and progression on non-small cell lung carcinoma (MSCLC). Endpoints that may be realized from this proposed research are: (1) detection of early genetic and/or cellular alterations which ultimately could lead to diagnostic modalities for the early detection of lung cancer; and (2) detection of novel tumor suppressor genes on chromosome 9p. This proposal will analyze both tumor specimens and sputum samples.

Fast Through-Bond Diffusion of Nitrogen in Silicon (open access)

Fast Through-Bond Diffusion of Nitrogen in Silicon

The authors report first principles total energy calculations of interaction of nitrogen in silicon with silicon self-interstitials. Substitutional nitrogen captures a silicon interstitial with 3.5 eV binding energy forming a {l_angle}001{r_angle} split interstitial ground state geometry, with the nitrogen forming three bonds. The low energy migration path is through a bond bridge state having two bonds. Fast diffusion of nitrogen occurs through a pure interstitialcy mechanism; the nitrogen never has less than two bonds. Near-zero formation energy of the nitrogen interstitialcy with respect to the substitutional rationalizes the low solubility of substitutional nitrogen in silicon.

Insights to repository performance through study of a nuclear test site

Underground nuclear test sites offer an unprecedented opportunity to evaluate processes relevant to high-level waste repository performance in the absence of engineered barriers. Radionuclide migration programs at the Nevada Test Site represent a twenty-five year systematic investigation of the diverse radiologic source terms residual from weapons testing and the evolution of the hydrologic source term which comprises those radionuclides dissolved in or otherwise available for transport by groundwater. The Nevada Test Site shares actinide source terms, correlative geology, an identical tectonic setting, similar climate, and a thick unsaturated zone with the adjacent proposed Yucca Mountain high-level waste repository and provides a natural laboratory to assess long-term radionuclide transport in the near field. Analog studies may ultimately help validate predictions of radionuclide transport from the Yucca Mountain repository.
