The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Ernest Latta. Latta worked in the CCC for a year and a half before joining the Army in October, 1940. He trained in Hawaii and was attached to Company I, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. He was at Schofield Barracks when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. After the attack, Latta guarded a beach on the western edge of Oahu for some time. He went to Guadalcanal in December, 1942. Latta earned a Silver Star in combat at Guadalcanal. He also invaded Vella Lavella. After that, he was present during the invasion of Luzon and participated in the battles at Balete Pass. Latta chose to be discharged when an opportunity came his way in July 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Royce Keiser. Keiser joined the Army in February of 1943. He served in the 156th Field Artillery Battalion, Battery B, 44th Infantry Division, 7th Army. Keiser worked as a lineman, stringing wire between switchboards and firing batteries, and also worked as a cannoneer on the 105mm howitzer. In September of 1944 he traveled overseas to Cherbourg, France, maneuvered through Mannheim and Worms, Germany, crossed the Rhine, moved into Lunéville, France to the front lines, and traveled through the Siegfried Line. Keiser participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He shares details of his combat experiences. Once the war ended, he traveled to Innsbruck, Austria. In July of 1945 he returned to the US and discharged in November.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Olive E. (Sally) White. White received her nursing degree in September of 1943 from Gary Methodist School of Nursing. In March of 1944 she was commissioned into the US Navy Nursing Corps, and stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Station. She achieved the rank of lieutenant (junior grade). She remained in the Reserves and was discharged in March of 1953.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Winfred Hartman. Hartman was drafted into the Army in June 1943. During his basic training in North Carolina, he was selected to be a medic. In January, 1944, he shipped to England where he worked in a replacement depot administering shots and processing paper records. After the Battle of the Bulge, Hartman was sent to join the 359th Regiment, 90th Infantry Division as a medic. He shares several anecdotes about his time in combat dealing with wounded and injured GIs. Hartman's unit was in Czechoslovakia when the war in Europe ended. He started home for the US in late November 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Henry Kolar. Kolar joined the Army in June of 1943. He served as a mechanic with the 997th Engineer Treadway Bridge Company. Beginning February of 1944, they deployed to England. They landed on Omaha Beach 2 weeks after the initial invasion. He was later transferred to the 95th Infantry Division, 379th Infantry Regiment. They traveled into France and, by November, captured the forts surrounding Metz and repulsed enemy attempts to cross the river. They traveled into Germany and participated in ongoing battles for several months, holding their position until the war ended. Kolar returned to the US and was discharged in late 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with John Cox. Cox was born in 1931, and shares his family’s involvement in World War II. He shares his experiences as a young boy growing up between Austin and San Antonio in wartime. He had two older brothers in the war, and two younger sisters at home he helped care for. Cox knew several families working at Kelly Air Force Base, where he learned to fly and help rebuild airplanes. He speaks about rationing during the early 1940s. From April of 1948 through May of 1964, Cox served in the Navy.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Andrew Pate. Pate joined the Army in February of 1945. He completed training with the Army Chaplain Corps. Pate served as a Stockade Chaplain at Fort Lewis in Washington, where he remained through August. From August of 1945 through the spring of 1946, Pate was assigned as Chaplain to Nichols Air Base in Manila, Philippines and Yokota Air Base in Tokyo, Japan. He returned to the US and was discharged in June of 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with John Tuznik. Tuznik was born near Random, Poland on 24 June 1923. He attended school until 1937 at which time he began working on the farm. He tells of German soldiers occupying the country and of the demands they made on the Polish citizens. In 1942 soldiers of the German Army killed his mother, father and a friend and burned the house down because they were suspected of being members of the Polish underground. He was forced as a slave laborer to work in a munitions plant. He worked in Germany and in 1943 he was sent to Finland where he was forced to work fifteen hour days, seven days a week with meager food and clothing. He was then moved to Norway and was there when liberated by the Russian Army in 1945. Following the war, Tuznik got married and immigrated to the United States with his wife.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Nancy Tuznik. Tuznik was born in Aremark, Norway 30 October 1931. She tells of her life before the German occupation in 1940. The German Army occupied Norway and all farmers were required to furnish a certain percentage of what they raised to the Wehrmacht. She recalls that her father was involved with the underground resistance forces but has no knowledge of the extent of his involvement. She does remember various relatives fleeing the country. Soon after the end of the war, she met and married her husband. She immigrated to the United States in 1954 with him.

NaDeane Walker Anderson was born in 1921 on a family farm near Canton, Texas. She was the second youngest child of nine to Charles H. Walker and Wincie Sides Walker. In 1942, NaDeane graduated from North Texas State Teacher’s College (NTSTC) in Denton, Texas.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Allen McKean. McKean was born in Staples, Texas 20 May 1924. Joining the Navy in December 1942, he underwent boot camp at San Diego, California. He was then sent to Norton Heights, Connecticut to attend Merchants Signal School. Upon completion, he was assigned to the SS Glen White (1918) as a signalman. Later, he was assigned to a Joint Assault Signal Company (JASCO) beach party team. McKean tells of landing with the 6th Marine Division on Okinawa on 1 April 1945 and the duties they performed. He was discharged soon after the surrender of Japan.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Ivan Haselby. Haselby joined the Army in July of 1944. He completed Officer Candidate School and served as a first lieutenant in the First Cavalry Division, Eighth Cavalry Regiment. He worked at Camp Wolters in Mineral Wells, Texas through May of 1945. Beginning in July, he was deployed to Japan and served with the occupation forces. He was stationed in the Chiba Prefecture, occupying and investigating schools. Haselby returned to the US and was discharged in 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Dr John McCall. After one college semester, McCall was drafted into the military and volunteered for a meteorology program. He took basic training at Keesler Field, Mississippi and in May 1943 began his academic training at the University of Chicago. After less than six months, his class got cancelled. Someone decided they didn't need as many weather forecasters as originally planned. McCall went to take basic training again, at Jefferson Barracks in St Louis, Missouri. Still hoping to learn a trade rather than just simply going to the trenches, McCall re-tested and re-classified and was given a choice between several program; he choose weather observing. He was sent to Chanute Field, Illinois for training and then to Rattlesnake Army Air Base in Pyote, Texas where he served as a weather observer for just over one year. McCall describes in detail his activities as a weather observer during his time at the base. Eventually, about half of the weather observers at the station were sent overseas and McCall was on a ship sailing for Hawaii when the war with Japan ended. The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Horace Chester Gould. Gould joined the Marine Corps in July of 1940. He served as a military policeman at Quantico, Virginia. Gould additionally served with the 5th Amphibious Corps, and participated in the battles of Tinian, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He participated in the allied occupation of Japan after the war ended. He was discharged in late 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents and oral interview with Robert Hagen. Born in San Francisco in 1919, Hagen was appointed to the Naval Academy in 1938 but was terminated for physical reasons. He then entered the Naval Reserve program at the University of Texas, graduating in 1940 as an ensign. He was assigned to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Illinois as Assistant Service School Selection Officer. The job consisted of testing and placing recruits in the most applicable job or school. He recalls rejecting the request by the five Sullivan brothers to be assigned to the same ship. His decision was overridden by superiors and the five brothers were assigned to the USS Juneau (CL-52). Upon requesting assignment to a ship of the line, Hagen was assigned to the USS Arron Ward (DD-483) as the communications officer, supply officer and radar officer. Hagen tells of the erratic and unprofessional behavior of the ship’s captain. He recalls seeing the USS Wasp (CV-7) hit by Japanese torpedoes and destroyer escorts looking for the Japanese submarine. The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Donald Guthrie. Guthrie joined the Navy in late December of 1941. In 1942, he flew PBY Catalinas with Patrol Squadron 23, a Black Cat Squadron. They were assigned to Midway, participating in patrols searching for the Japanese invasion force. They also supported the invasion of and operations at Guadalcanal. In 1943, Guthrie was assigned to Funafuti and completed air, sea and rescue missions. In 1944, he flew missions over Kwajalein, Guam, Saipan, Iwo Jima and numerous other islands. He returned to the US and was discharged in September of 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Ralph Mullins. Mullins joined the Navy in 1942. He served with the 1008th Naval Construction Battalion Detachment. In July of 1943 they deployed to Purvis Bay in the Solomon Islands. They worked at Purvis Bay, Guadalcanal and Tulagi. They built a Marine railway to bring in landing craft to do hull work. They also built floating dry docks and shops for needed camp facilities. Mullins also worked in the fuel dump handling 55-gallon barrels of gasoline. In February of 1945, Mullins transferred to Pearl Harbor to train in underwater demolition. May through June he traveled aboard the USS Schmitt (APD-76), carrying explosive and ordnance materials to participate in the Battle of Balikpapan. He returned to the US in August of 1945, and discharged in January of 1946.
