Ab Initio Nuclear Structure from Helium to Oxygen Final Report: 00-ERD-028 (open access)

Ab Initio Nuclear Structure from Helium to Oxygen Final Report: 00-ERD-028

Final report for a research program in theoretical nuclear physics to develop methods and computer programs to perform ab initio calculations for light nuclei ranging from Helium to Oxygen. The method employed is based effective interaction theory within the framework of the shell model. The principal accomplishments were: (1) participation in the validation of ab initio for {sup 4}He; the first study of A = 6 nuclei with the realistic, non-local CD-Bonn potential; (2) a study of ''intruder'' states in {sup 8}Be, (3) the first shell-model calculations implementing three-body clusters in the effective interaction for nuclei with A > 4; (4) the discovery that two-nucleon interactions by themselves are inadequate to describe the structure of the nucleus {sup 10}B, which provides proof that three-nucleon forces affect nuclear structure; (5) first calculations including the Tucson-Melbourne three-nucleon force, which gives better agreement with the experimental spectrum for {sup 10}B and (6) the development of a new shell-model code designed for public release.

Amorphous and nanocrystalline Mg{sub 2}Si thin film electrodes (open access)

Amorphous and nanocrystalline Mg{sub 2}Si thin film electrodes

Mg{sub 2}Si films, prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), were amorphous, as prepared, and nanocrystalline following annealing. Their micro-structure and electrochemical characteristics were studied by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electrochemical cycling against lithium. HRTEM analysis revealed that some excess Si was present in the films. The more amorphous thinner film exhibited excellent cyclability. However, when the film becomes crystalline, the irreversible capacity loss was more significant during the initial cycling and after *50 cycles. Interpretations of the superior stability of the amorphous films are examined.

China-U.S. Trade Issues (open access)

China-U.S. Trade Issues

U.S.-China economic ties have expanded substantially over the past several years. China is now the third largest U.S. trading partner, its second largest source of imports, and its fourth largest export market. However, U.S.-China commercial ties have been strained by a number of issues, including a surging U.S. trade deficit with China, China's refusal to float its currency, and failure to fully comply with its World Trade Organization (WTO) commitments, especially its failure to provide protection for U.S. intellectual property rights (IPR). This report explores these issues in detail, especially concerning the lack of protection for U.S. IPR.

Clean Air Act Issues in the 107th Congress (open access)

Clean Air Act Issues in the 107th Congress

In the 107th Congress, the most prominent air quality issue has been whether state and federal regulations designed to protect air quality are having a negative impact on energy production, and, if so, whether legislation should be enacted to reform such regulations. The early discussion focused primarily on California, but with the release of the Administration’s energy policy recommendations in May 2001 and subsequent congressional action, attention shifted to issues more national in scope.

CONVERT 15 WELLS TO BORS PUMPING UNITS AND TEST/COMPARE TO CONVENTIONAL UNITS (open access)

CONVERT 15 WELLS TO BORS PUMPING UNITS AND TEST/COMPARE TO CONVENTIONAL UNITS

A new type of fluid lifting equipment called Balanced Oil Recovery System (trade named BORS Lift{trademark}) was installed on several idle oil wells to demonstrate the operating efficiency of this innovative equipment technology. The BORS Lift system is designed to bring oil to the surface without the accompanying formation water. The BORS Lift system uses an innovative strap mechanism that takes oil from the top of the downhole oilwater column and lifts it to the surface, eliminating production of the formation water. Eliminating salt water production could potentially increase oil production, reduce operational costs, benefit the environment, and cut salt water disposal costs. Although the BORS Lift units did not function as intended, lessons learned during the course of the field demonstration project resulted in improvements in the technology and redesign of subsequent generation BORS Lift units which are reported to have significantly improved their performance characteristics. BORS Lift units were installed on 15 temporarily abandoned wells which had been shut down due to low oil production, high water production, and uneconomic operating conditions. The wells had been producing with artificial lift at a high watercut from a shallow (850-900 feet), pressure depleted oil sand reservoir prior to being shut …

Development of CFD Software To Support the Engineering of Lost Foam Pattern Blowing and Steaming (open access)

Development of CFD Software To Support the Engineering of Lost Foam Pattern Blowing and Steaming

This CFD Project has led to a new commercial software package (Arena-flow-eps) for advanced engineering of lost foam pattern formation. Specifically, the new software models all fluid/particle/thermal phenomena during both the bead-blowing and the pattern-fusing cycles--within a single, integrated computational tool. Engineering analysis with Arena-flow-eps will enable foundries to now obtain desirable foam pattern characteristics in a reliable (consistent) manner, aided by an understanding of the fundamental fluid/thermal physics of the process. This will lead to significant reductions in casting scrap and energy usage, as well as enable future castings to satisfy stringent requirements on high-power-density and low-emissions in tomorrow's automotive and watercraft engines.

Exploration of SMP-Aware DAO Memory Performance Issues-Final Report 2002 (open access)

Exploration of SMP-Aware DAO Memory Performance Issues-Final Report 2002

The performance of many LLNL applications is dominated by the cost of main memory accesses. Worse, many current trends in computer architecture will lead to substantial degradation of the percentage of peak performance obtained by these codes. This project yields novel techniques that alleviate this problem in SMP-based systems, which are common at LLNL. Further, our techniques will complement other emerging mechanisms for improving memory system performance, such as processor-in-memory. The exploration of existing dynamic access ordering (DAO) mechanisms adapted to SMPs and the development of new memory performance optimization techniques will lead to significant improvements in run times for LLNL applications on future computing platforms, effectively increasing the size of the platform. In this project, we have focused on a range of techniques to overcome the performance bottleneck of current multiprocessor systems and to increase the single-node efficiency. These efforts include the design and implementation of a toolset to analyze memory access patterns of applications, the exploration of regularity metrics and their use to classify code behavior, and a set of microbenchmarks to assess and quantify the performance of SMP memory systems. We will make these tools available to the general laboratory user community to help the evaluation and …

Factors Affecting the Recreational Fishery in Moses Lake, Washington, 2000-2001 Annual Report. (open access)

Factors Affecting the Recreational Fishery in Moses Lake, Washington, 2000-2001 Annual Report.

The Moses Lake Project (project No. 199502800) was first funded by Bonneville Power Administration during the FY 99. Work commenced and proceeded through September 2001 when questions arouse on the Scope of Work. Due to funding issues at the beginning of FY 2001 we were unable to secure monies to continue with our proposed scope of work. Consequently, the Moses Lake Project was reduced to one full-time employee. An extension of fifty thousand dollars was granted in which the project with one remaining member by October 2001 continued to operate. By December 2001 the NWPPC granted an additional 20K in spending to secure an advisor that could assist in providing a proposal that the ISRP would find amenable. By Jan 2002, the Moses Lake staff put Dr. David Bennett, from the University of Idaho on payroll. With the guidance of Dr. Bennett the Moses Lake project staff was successful in turning in a new version of the proposal and ultimately received funding by July of 2002. Consequently, the lack of manpower and time spent revising and resubmitting said proposal hampered progress. Consequently, this report covers work conducted on the original Scope of Work (SOW) to July 2002 and then follows …

FIELD TEST OF THE FLAME QUALITY INDICATOR (open access)

FIELD TEST OF THE FLAME QUALITY INDICATOR

The flame quality indicator concept was developed at BNL specifically to monitor the brightness of the flame in a small oil burner and to provide a ''call for service'' notification when the brightness has changed from its setpoint, either high or low. In prior development work BNL has explored the response of this system to operational upsets such as excess air changes, fouled atomizer nozzles, poor fuel quality, etc. Insight Technologies, Inc. and Honeywell, Inc. have licensed this technology from the U.S. Department of Energy and have been cooperating to develop product offerings which meet industry needs with an optimal combination of function and price. Honeywell has recently completed the development of the Flame Quality Monitor (FQM or Honeywell QS7100F). This is a small module which connects via a serial cable to the burners primary operating control. Primary advantages of this approach are simplicity, cost, and ease of installation. Call-for-service conditions are output in the form of front panel indicator lights and contact closure which can trigger a range of external communication options. Under this project a field test was conducted of the FQM in cooperation with service organizations in Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut. At total …

Large-Scale Validation of AMIP2 Land-Surface Simulations (open access)

Large-Scale Validation of AMIP2 Land-Surface Simulations

Diagnostic Subproject 12 (DSP 12) on Land-surface Processes and Parameterizations is one of several AMIP-related efforts to analyze the effectiveness of current climate models in simulating continental processes. DSP 12's particular objectives are (1) to validate large-scale AMIP2 continental simulations against available global reference data sets; (2) to verify continental energy/moisture conservation and diagnose related land-surface processes in the AMIP2 models; and (3) to formulate hypotheses on putative connections between AMIP2 simulation performance and the complexities of the respective land-surface schemes (LSSs) that might be tested by further numerical experimentation. This paper outlines DSP 12's large-scale validation work, while companion papers by Henderson-Sellers et al., Irannejad et al., and Zhang et al. briefly present our analysis of other facets of AMIP2 land-surface simulations.
