The Impacts of Uranium and Thorium on the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) Viscosity Model (open access)

The Impacts of Uranium and Thorium on the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) Viscosity Model

The Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) at the Savannah River Site (SRS) vitrifies high level liquid waste (HLLW) into borosilicate glass for stabilization and permanent disposal. The viscosity of the borosilicate glass melt as a function of temperature is the single most important variable affecting the melt rate and pour ability of the glass. The viscosity determines the rate of melting of the raw feed, the rate of glass bubble release (foaming and fining), the rate of homogenization, the adequacy of heat transfer, the devitrification rate, and thus, the quality (in terms of glass homogeneity) of the final glass product. If the viscosity is too low, excessive convection currents can occur during melting, increasing corrosion/erosion of the melter materials of construction (refractory and electrodes) and making control of the melter more difficult. The lowest glass viscosities allowed in the DWPF melter have, therefore, been determined to be approximately 20 poise. DWPF glasses must pour continuously into a large steel canister for ultimate storage in a geologic repository, but glasses with a viscosity greater than or equal to 500 poise do not readily pour. Moreover, too high a viscosity can reduce product quality by causing voids in the final glass. A …

Overcoming degradation mechanisms in CdTe solar cells: First annual report, August 1998--August 1999 (open access)

Overcoming degradation mechanisms in CdTe solar cells: First annual report, August 1998--August 1999

The authors have studied the importance of chemical processes for the stability of CdTe solar cells, in particular, diffusion in the ohmic contact/absorber junction regions. Both whole cells and test systems containing only the ohmic contact and the absorber are used. They found several experimental methods to be useable tools to follow the effects of impurity diffusion on the CdTe grain boundaries, grain bulk, and surface. In addition, they have explored alternative contacting schemes. The first year of activities led to the following tentative conclusions: Grain boundaries in CdTe/CdS cells are NOT fully passivated and are expected to be electrically active; There appears to be fast ionic diffusion in the vicinity of the Cu/HgTe/graphite back-contact, possibly enhanced by grain boundary diffusion; The macroscopic response to stress is different for cells with identical back-contact, but from different manufacturers. Different factors and/or different reactions to identical factors are possibly at work here; and Ni-P appears to be a promising back-contact material.

Oral History Interview with Paul Candelori, February 28, 2007 transcript

Oral History Interview with Paul Candelori, February 28, 2007

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Paul Candelori. Candelori joined the Navy in June of 1943. He served as Radioman Third Class and had additional training in amphibious landings. He traveled to Hawaii in April of 1944, training and working on the island. In February of 1945 he was assigned to USS LST-646 and participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima, working as radio operator and delivering supplies to the troops on the island. Candelori returned to the US in December of 1945 and was discharged in April of 1946.

Closure Welding of Plutonium Bearing Storage Containers (open access)

Closure Welding of Plutonium Bearing Storage Containers

A key element in the Department of Energy (DOE) strategy for the stabilization, packaging and storage of plutonium-bearing materials involves closure welding of DOE-STD-3013 Outer Containers (3013 container). The 3013 container provides the primary barrier and pressure boundary preventing release of plutonium-bearing materials to the environment. The final closure (closure weld) of the 3013 container must be leaktight, structurally sound and meet DOE STD 3013 specified criteria. This paper focuses on the development, qualification and demonstration of the welding process for the closure welding of Hanford PFP 3013 outer containers.

Evolution of the Sensor Fish Device for Measuring Physical Conditions in Severe Hydraulic Environments (open access)

Evolution of the Sensor Fish Device for Measuring Physical Conditions in Severe Hydraulic Environments

To assist in deriving biological specifications for design of turbine rehabilitation measures, new ''fish-friendly'' turbines, and spillway designs and operations, scientists at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have developed and tested an autonomous multi-sensor device called a Sensor Fish that can acquire pressure and tri-axial linear acceleration data during passage through severe hydraulic conditions. The purpose of the Sensor Fish is to characterize physical conditions fish experience during passage through hydro turbines, spill stilling basins, high-discharge outfalls, and other dam passage routes. The Sensor Fish was developed with the support of the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Hydropower Turbine System program. Field tests of the Sensor Fish at Rock Island, McNary, The Dalles, Bonneville, and Wanapum dams on the Columbia River and the Prosser Irrigation District on the Yakima River have shown that the device can withstand the severe environments of turbine, spill, and fish bypass passage and provide useful environmental data that can ultimately aid in the design and operation of new and existing turbines, spill, and dam fish bypass facilities.

Application of Diagnostic/Prognostic Methods to Critical Equipment for the Spent Nuclear Fuel Cleanup Program (open access)

Application of Diagnostic/Prognostic Methods to Critical Equipment for the Spent Nuclear Fuel Cleanup Program

The management of the Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) project at the Hanford K-Basin in the 100 N Area has successfully restructured the preventive maintenance, spare parts inventory requirements, and the operator rounds data requirements. In this investigation, they continue to examine the different facets of the operations and maintenance (O&M) of the K-Basin cleanup project in search of additional reliability and cost savings. This report focuses on the initial findings of a team of PNNL engineers engaged to identify potential opportunities for reducing the cost of O&M through the application of advanced diagnostics (fault determination) and prognostics (residual life/reliability determination). The objective is to introduce predictive technologies to eliminate or reduce high impact equipment failures. The PNNL team in conjunction with the SNF engineers found the following major opportunities for cost reduction and/or enhancing reliability: (1) Provide data routing and automated analysis from existing detection systems to a display center that will engage the operations and engineering team. This display will be operator intuitive with system alarms and integrated diagnostic capability. (2) Change operating methods to reduce major transients induced in critical equipment. This would reduce stress levels on critical equipment. (3) Install a limited sensor set on failure prone …

The Consumer Price Index: A Brief Overview (open access)

The Consumer Price Index: A Brief Overview

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is perhaps the most widely reported measure of inflation. A number of federal government programs are regularly adjusted to account for changes in the CPI, such as Social Security benefits and the personal income tax rate schedule. Thus, the behavior of the CPI has important consequences for a large number of people. This report contains information on how the CPI is estimated, improving the CPI measure, and more information related to this calculation.
