[Teammates help Kennethia Wilson stand up]

Photograph of members of the UNT women's basketball helping Kennethia Wilson up after being fouled by a Troy University player. Wilson has her knees bent, and is extending both arms out as two teammates grab her wrists for support. Players from both teams can be seen standing in the background, partially out of frame.

Precise Predictions for W + 3 Jet Production at Hadron Colliders (open access)

Precise Predictions for W + 3 Jet Production at Hadron Colliders

We report on the first next-to-leading order QCD computation of W + 3-jet production in hadronic collisions including all partonic subprocesses. We compare the results with CDF data from the Tevatron, and find excellent agreement. The renormalization and factorization scale dependence is reduced substantially compared to leading-order calculations. The required one-loop matrix elements are computed using on-shell methods, implemented in a numerical program, BlackHat. We use the SHERPA package to generate the real-emission contributions and to integrate the various contributions over phase space. We use a leading-color (large-N{sub c}) approximation for the virtual part, which we confirm in W + 1,2-jet production to be valid to within three percent. The present calculation demonstrates the utility of on-shell methods for computing next-to-leading-order corrections to processes important to physics analyses at the Large Hadron Collider.

Homeland Security: Intelligence Support (open access)

Homeland Security: Intelligence Support

Legislation establishing a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) (P.L. 107-296) included provisions for an information analysis element within the new department. It did not transfer to DHS existing government intelligence and law enforcement agencies but envisioned an analytical office utilizing the products of other agencies — both unevaluated information and finished reports — to provide warning of terrorist attacks, assessments of vulnerability, and recommendations for remedial actions at federal, state, and local levels, and by the private sector. In January 2003, the Administration announced its intention to establish a new Terrorist Threat Integration Center (TTIC) to undertake many of the tasks envisioned for the DHS informational analysis element, known as Information Analysis and Infrastructure Protection (IAIP), but some Members of Congress argue that TTIC cannot be a substitute for a DHS analytical effort. This report examines different approaches to improving the information analysis function and the sharing of information among federal agencies.

Appropriations for FY2001: An Overview

Appropriations are one part of a complex federal budget process that includes budget resolutions, appropriations (regular, supplemental, and continuing) bills, rescissions, and budget reconciliation bills. This report is a broad overview of all appropriations activity and a guide to the CRS Appropriation Product Series that provides analytical perspectives on the 13 annual FY2001 appropriations bills.

Near Real Time Characterization of BNL Stockpiled Soils, Another ASTD Success Story (open access)

Near Real Time Characterization of BNL Stockpiled Soils, Another ASTD Success Story

As of October 2001, approximately 7,000 yd{sup 3} of stockpiled soil, contaminated to varying degrees with radioactive materials and heavy metals, remained at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) after the remediation of the BNL Chemical/Animal/Glass Pits disposal area. During the 1997 removal action, the more hazardous/radioactive materials were segregated, along with, chemical liquids and solids, animal carcasses, intact gas cylinders, and a large quantity of metal and glass debris. Nearly all of these materials have been disposed of. In order to ensure that all debris was removed and to characterize the large quantity of heterogeneous soil, BNL initiated an extended sorting, segregation, and characterization project, co-funded by the BNL Environmental Management Directorate and the DOE EM Office of Science and Technology Accelerated Site Technology Deployment (ASTD) program. Project objectives were to remove any non-conforming items, and to assure that mercury and radioactive contaminant levels were within acceptable limits for disposal as low-level radioactive waste. Sorting and segregation were conducted simultaneously. Large stockpiles, ranging from 150 to 1,200 yd{sup 3}, were subdivided into manageable 20 yd{sup 3} ''subpiles'' after powered vibratory screening. The 1/2 inch screen removed gravel and almost all non-conforming items, which were separated for further characterization. Soil that passed …

Final Report LDRD 04-ERD-021 (open access)

Final Report LDRD 04-ERD-021

In this project, we performed experiments and simulations to establish constitutive models for plastic behavior and to determine the deformation mechanism of nanocrystalline materials at different grain sizes (<100 nm) and high strain rates (>10{sup 6}/s). The experiments used both laser-induced shocks and isentropic compression to investigate, for the first time, the high-strain-rate deformation of nanocrystalline Ni. Samples were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, nanoindentation, profilometry, and x-ray diffraction before and after loading. We validated constitutive models using both atomistic molecular dynamics and continuum simulations performed at the boundary of their current computational possibilities to match experimental scales.

Inspection 13.2 nm table-top full-field microscope (open access)

Inspection 13.2 nm table-top full-field microscope

We present results on a table-top microscope that uses an EUV stepper geometry to capture full-field images with a halfpitch spatial resolution of 55 nm. This microscope uses a 13.2 nm wavelength table-top laser for illumination and acquires images of reflective masks with exposures of 20 seconds. These experiments open the path to the realization of high resolution table-top imaging systems for actinic defect characterization.

AdS/CFT and Light-Front Holography: A Theory of Strong Interactions (open access)

AdS/CFT and Light-Front Holography: A Theory of Strong Interactions

Recent developments in the theory of strong interactions are discussed in the framework of the AdS/CFT duality between string theories of gravity in a higher dimension Anti-de Sitter space and conformal quantum field theories in physical space-time. This novel theoretical approach, combined with 'light-front holography', leads to new insights into the quark and gluon structure of hadrons and a viable first approximation to quantum chromodynamics, the fundamental theory of the strong and nuclear interactions.
