Since Roy Bedichek's influential Adventures with a Texas Naturalist, no book has attempted to explore the uniqueness of Texas nature, or reflected the changes in the human landscape that have accelerated since Bedichek's time. Pride of Place updates Bedichek's discussion by acknowledging the increased urbanization and the loss of wildspace in today's state. It joins other recent collections of regional nature writing while demonstrating what makes Texas uniquely diverse. These fourteen essays are held together by the story of Texas pride, the sense that from West Texas to the Coastal Plains, we and the landscape are important and worthy of pride, if not downright bravado. This book addresses all the major regions of Texas. In Big Thicket Legacy, Campbell and Lynn Loughmiller present the stories of people living in the Big Thicket of southeast Texas. Many of the storytellers were close to one hundred years old when interviewed, with some being the great-grandchildren of the first settlers. Interview with Aletha Barsanti regarding her experiences as the wife of U. S. Army General Olinto Barsanti. They married in 1942. She remembers their courtship in San Antonio; their assignments in Europe, Japan, and Washington, D.C.; raising their children; his activities in the Korean War; his promotion to general; military protocol for the wives of general officers; and his one-year tour in the Vietnam War as the commander of the 101st Airborne Division. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer and died in May 1973.

Interview with engineer and Army veteran Mansfield Millington Bascom. The interview includes Bascom's personal experiences about the European Theater during World War II, basic training, action on the Siegfried Line, the Battle of Aachen, individual episodes of close ground combat, German tank concentrations immediately prior to the Ardennes Offensive, being wounded and evacuating from the front, recuperation, and returning to the states.

Interview with photojournalist and artist Joe Cole. The interview includes Cole's personal experiences about the Texas International Pop Festival. Cole talks about his parents' reaction to changes in the Sixties, his introduction to marijuana, his attraction to the music of the Beatles, his initial introduction to the Fort Worth hippie culture, his views towards the Vietnam war, obtaining an agricultural exemption from his local draft board, Sixties music and its message, his comments about the Chicago Transit Authority, Canned Heat, and Led Zeppelin, activities of the Hog Farm, drug usage at the festival, festival security personnel, "bad trip" tents, skinny-dipping in Lake Dallas, and the lasting influence of the festival on his life.

Interview with pastor and Navy veteran Harry E. Chase. The interview includes Chase's personal experiences while aboard the destroyer tender USS Dobbin during the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

The interview includes England's personal experiences while aboard the battleship USS West Virginia during the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. England also talks about the death of his brother, Boyd England, who was killed on the West Virginia during the attack. The interview includes an appendix with an article about England.
