ANALYSIS OF OIL-BEARING CRETACEOUS SANDSTONE HYDROCARBON RESERVOIRS, EXCLUSIVE OF THE DAKOTA SANDSTONE, ON THE JICARILLA APACHE INDIAN RESERVATION, NEW MEXICO

An additional 450 wells were added to the structural database; there are now 2550 wells in the database with corrected tops on the Juana Lopez, base of the Bridge Creek Limestone, and datum. This completes the structural data base compilation. Fifteen oil and five gas fields from the Mancos-ElVado interval were evaluated with respect to the newly defined sequence stratigraphic model for this interval. The five gas fields are located away from the structural margins of the deep part of the San Juan Basin. All the fields have characteristics of basin-centered gas and can be considered as continuous gas accumulations as recently defined by the U.S. Geological Survey. Oil production occurs in thinly interbedded sandstone and shale or in discrete sandstone bodies. Production is both from transgressive and regressive strata as redefined in this study. Oil production is both stratigraphically and structurally controlled with production occurring along the Chaco slope or in steeply west-dipping rocks along the east margin of the basin. The ElVado Sandstone of subsurface usage is redefined to encompass a narrower interval; it appears to be more time correlative with the Dalton Sandstone. Thus, it was deposited as part of a regressive sequence, in contrast to the …

Intraoral fiber optic-based diagnostic for periodontal disease (open access)

Intraoral fiber optic-based diagnostic for periodontal disease

The purpose of this initial study was to begin development of a new, objective diagnostic instrument that will allow simultaneous quantitation of multiple proteases within a single periodontal pocket using a chemical fiber optic sensor. This approach could potentially be adapted to use specific antibodies and chemiluminescence to detect and quantitate virtually any compound and compare concentrations of different compounds within the same periodontal pocket. The device could also be used to assay secretions in salivary ducts or from a variety of wounds. The applicability is, therefore, not solely limited to dentistry and the device would be important both for clinical diagnostics and as a research tool.

Preliminary Evaluation of NMIS for Interrogation of Pu and HEU in AT400-RContainers at Mayak (open access)

Preliminary Evaluation of NMIS for Interrogation of Pu and HEU in AT400-RContainers at Mayak

Preliminary Monte Carlo simulations have demonstrated the sensitivity of the NMIS active interrogation method to the amount of uranium fissile material stored in AT400-R containers that are being proposed for use in the Mayak facility. Properties of the time-of-flight signature can be used to determine the absence of one of the uranium metal spheres or to determine if a different enrichment sphere is present in the container. The tail of the time-of-flight signature from induced fission is directly dependent on the amount of uranium 235 present in the containers, and a particular ratio of the correlated counts due to fission to the correlated counts due to transmission is nearly linear with 235U mass. These simulations demonstrate that the NMIS active method can be used to assay the amount of {sup 235}U with a sensitivity of coefficient of {approx}0.1 per kg {sup 235}U (approximately 10% change in the ratio per kilogram of {sup 235}U). These calculations have shown that these active measurements with a {sup 252}Cf source of 1 x 10{sup 6} fission per sec would require the order of a few minutes of data accumulation time for a container with two 8 kg spheres, and since NMIS operates in real …

Progress in the engineering design of the National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX) (open access)

Progress in the engineering design of the National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX)

The National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX) is a proof-of-principle experiment whose objective is to demonstrate high beta operation in a quasi-axisymmetric stellarator. NCSX will be housed in the Princeton Beta Experiment (PBX-M) test cell. Many of the existing site assets including the test cell, TF and PF coils, power supplies, neutral beam heating systems, and site utilities can be re-used, minimizing the cost of the project. Saddle coils are used in the reference design. The stellarator core is pre-fabricated and dropped into place on the PBX-M platform. The existing TF and PF coils are then reassembled around the stellarator core. Alternate coil topologies are also being explored.
