Beta-Phosphinoethylboranes as Ambiphilic Ligands in Nickel-Methyl Complexes

The ambiphilic {beta}-phosphinoethylboranes Ph{sub 2}PCH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}BR{sub 2} (BR{sub 2} = BCy{sub 2} (1a), BBN (1b)), which feature a ethano spacer CH{sub 2}CH{sub 2} between the Lewis acidic boryl and Lewis basic phosphino groups, were synthesized in nearly quantitative yields via the hydroboration of vinyldiphenylphosphine. Compounds 1a and 1b were fully characterized by elemental analysis, and by NMR and IR spectroscopy. X-ray crystallographic studies of compound 1b revealed infinite helical chains of the molecules connected through P{hor_ellipsis}B donor-acceptor interactions. The ability of these ambiphilic ligands to concurrently act as donors and acceptors was highlighted by their reactions with (dmpe)NiMe{sub 2}. Zwitterionic complexes (dmpe)NiMe(Ph{sub 2}PCH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}BCy{sub 2}Me) (2a) and (dmpe)NiMe(Ph{sub 2}PCH{sub 2}CH{sub 2}[BBN]Me) (2b) were generated via the abstraction of one of the methyl groups, forming a borate, and intramolecular coordination of the phosphine moiety to the resulting cationic metal center. Compound 2b was characterized by X-ray crystallography. Furthermore, B(C{sub 6}F{sub 5}){sub 3} abstracts the methyl group of a coordinated borate ligand to generate a free, 3-coordinate borane center in [(dmpe)NiMe(1a)]{sup +}[MeB(C{sub 6}F{sub 5}){sub 3}]{sup -} (3).

Performance of the Anti-Coincidence Detector on the GLAST Large Area Telescope

The Anti-Coincidence Detector (ACD), the outermost detector layer in the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) Large Area Telescope (LAT), is designed to detect and veto incident cosmic ray charged particles, which outnumber cosmic gamma rays by 3-4 orders of magnitude. The challenge in ACD design is that it must have high (0.9997) detection efficiency for singly-charged relativistic particles, but must also have a low probability for self-veto of high-energy gammas by backsplash radiation from interactions in the LAT calorimeter. Simulations and tests demonstrate that the ACD meets its design requirements. The performance of the ACD has remained stable through stand-alone environmental testing, shipment across the U.S., installation onto the LAT, shipment back across the U.S., LAT environmental testing, and shipment to Arizona. As part of the fully-assembled GLAST observatory, the ACD is being readied for final testing before launch.

D0 - Anti-D0 Mixing at BaBar

The BABAR and Belle collaborations have recently found evidence for mixing within the D meson system. We present some of the mixing search techniques used by BABAR and their status as of the beginning of the summer 2007. These have culminated in a measurement in the K{pi} decay final state of the D that is inconsistent with the no-mixing hypothesis with a significance of 3.9 standard deviations.

The GLAST LAT Instrument Science Operations Center (open access)

The GLAST LAT Instrument Science Operations Center

The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) is scheduled for launch in late 2007. Operations support and science data processing for the Large Area Telescope (LAT) instrument on GLAST will be provided by the LAT Instrument Science Operations Center (ISOC) at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). The ISOC supports GLAST mission operations in conjunction with other GLAST mission ground system elements and supports the research activities of the LAT scientific collaboration. The ISOC will be responsible for monitoring the health and safety of the LAT, preparing command loads for the LAT, maintaining embedded flight software which controls the LAT detector and data acquisition flight hardware, maintaining the operating configuration of the LAT and its calibration, and applying event reconstruction processing to down-linked LAT data to recover information about detected gamma-ray photons. The SLAC computer farm will be used to process LAT event data and generate science products, to be made available to the LAT collaboration through the ISOC and to the broader scientific community through the GLAST Science Support Center at NASA/GSFC. ISOC science operations will optimize the performance of the LAT and oversee automated science processing of LAT data to detect and monitor transient gamma-ray sources.

GRB Simulations in GLAST

The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), scheduled to be launched in fall of 2007, is the next generation satellite for high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. The Large Area Telescope (LAT) is a pair conversion telescope built with a high precision silicon tracker, a segmented CsI electromagnetic calorimeter and a plastic anticoincidence shield. The LAT will survey the sky in the energy range between 20 MeV to more than 300 GeV, shedding light on many issues left open by its highly successful predecessor EGRET. LAT will observe Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) in an energy range never explored before; to tie these frontier observations to the better-known properties at lower energies, a second instrument, the GLAST Burst Monitor (GBM) will provide important spectra and timing in the 10 keV to 30 MeV range. We briefly present the instruments onboard the GLAST satellite, their synergy in the GRB observations and the work done so far by the collaboration in simulation, analysis, and GRB sensitivity estimation.

A Simple Explanation for the X(3872) Mass Shift Observed for Decay to D^{*0} \bar{D^0}

We propose a simple explanation for the increase of approximately 3 MeV/c2 in the mass value of the X(3872) obtained from D{sup *0} {bar D}{sup 0} decay relative to that obtained from decay to J/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} If the total width of the X(3872) is 2-3 MeV, the peak position in the D{sup *0} {bar D}{sup 0} invariant mass distribution is sensitive to the final state orbital angular momentum because of the proximity of the X(3872) to D{sup *0} {bar D}{sup 0} threshold. We show that for total width 3 MeV and one unit of orbital angular momentum, a mass shift {approx}3 MeV/c2 is obtained; experimental mass resolution should slightly increase this value. A consequence is that spin-parity 2{sup -} is favored for the X(3872).

IN-SITU MONITORING OF CORROSION DURING A LABORATORY SIMULATION OF OXALIC ACID CHEMICAL CLEANING

The Savannah River Site (SRS) will disperse or dissolve precipitated metal oxides as part of radioactive waste tank closure operations. Previously SRS used oxalic acid to accomplish this task. To better understand the conditions of oxalic acid cleaning of the carbon steel waste tanks, laboratory simulations of the process were conducted to determine the corrosion rate of carbon steel and the generation of gases such as hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Open circuit potential measurements, linear polarization measurements, and coupon immersion tests were performed in-situ to determine the corrosion behavior of carbon steel during the demonstration. Vapor samples were analyzed continuously to determine the constituents of the phase. The combined results from these measurements indicated that in aerated environments, such as the tank, that the corrosion rates are manageable for short contact times and will facilitate prediction and control of the hydrogen generation rate during operations.

Target Accuracy Assessment for an ADS Design

Nuclear data uncertainties and their impact on a very wide range of reactor systems, including their associated fuel cycles, have to be assessed in order to consolidate preliminary design studies for new innovative systems. One specific class of systems is the so-called “dedicated waste transmuters”, that are fast neutron systems (critical or sub-critical, i.e. ADS), loaded with a Minor Actinide (MA) dominated fuel and potentially uranium-free. The availability of very general tools for sensitivity and uncertainty analysis together with new variance-covariance matrix data, produced in a joint effort under the auspices of the OECD-NEA by the world leading nuclear data evaluation groups, makes that endeavor particularly significant. In this report major results of interest for dedicated ADS are discussed and the most important fields and data types are pointed out, where priority improvements are required.

Many properties of nanostructures depend on the atomicconfiguration at the surface. One common technique used for determiningthis surface structure is based on the low energy electron diffraction(LEED) method, which uses a high-fidelity physics model to compareexperimental results with spectra computed via a computer simulation.While this approach is highly effective, the computational cost of thesimulations can be prohibitive for large systems. In this work, wepropose the use of a direct search method in conjunction with an additivesurrogate. This surrogate is constructed from a combination of asimplified physics model and an interpolation that is based on thedifferences between the simplified physics model and the full fidelitymodel.

Improving LER Coupling and PEP-II Luminosity with Model-Independent Analysis

The PEP-II storage ring at SLAC houses electrons (in the High-Energy Ring, or HER) and positrons (in the Low-Energy Ring, or LER) for collision. The goal of this project was to improve the linear optics of the LER in order to decrease coupling, thereby decreasing emittance and increasing luminosity. To do this, we first took turn by turn BPM (Beam Position Monitor) data of a single positron bunch at two betatron resonance excitations, extracted orbits from this data using Model-Independent Analysis, and from these orbits formed a virtual model of the accelerator. We then took this virtual model and found an accelerator configuration which we predicted would, by creating vertical symmetric sextupole bumps and adjusting the strengths of several key quadrupole magnets, improve the coupling and decrease the emittance in the LER. We dialed this configuration into the LER and observed the coupling, emittance, and luminosity. Coupling immediately improved, as predicted, and the y emittance dropped by a dramatic 40%. After the HER was adjusted to match the LER at the Interaction Point (IP), we saw a 10% increase in luminosity, from 10.2 x 10{sup 33}cm{sup -2}sec{sup -1} to 11.2 x 10{sup 33}cm{sup -2}sec{sup -1}, and achieved a record peak …
