What is the Appropriate Reference Condition for Optimizing Concentrator Cells? Preprint

This conference paper describes Consensus standards for determining the efficiency of a concentrator cell or module that have not been developed. NREL, Sandia National Laboratory, the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy in Germany, and the Progress in Photovoltaics Efficiency Table authors have informally agreed upon concentrator-cell reference conditions. These conditions are 25C cell temperature, 1-sun=1000 W/m2 total irradiance, and the ASTM E891-87 direct-normal reference spectrum. Deficiencies in the direct reference spectrum are discussed, and a more representative reference spectrum for evaluating concentrator cells is proposed. The spectrum was generated by the SMARTS model, and the atmospheric parameters are as close as possible to the existing direct spectrum, with the exception that the aerosol optical depth at 500 nm is reduced from 0.27 to 0.085.

What is the microscopic response of a system driven far from equilibrium? (open access)

What is the microscopic response of a system driven far from equilibrium?

The central theme of this lecture is that there exists a surprisingly simple and general answer to the question posed in the title, provided that we frame the question statistically. I will present this result along with several derivations, and will discuss some of its implications and generalizations.

What might U.S. homes and workplaces be like in the year 2020--and what are the implications for energy use? (open access)

What might U.S. homes and workplaces be like in the year 2020--and what are the implications for energy use?

Can lifestyle-based scenarios provide insight into the nature of energy use in our future buildings? Participants in a design charrette brainstormed ideas about the future of US homes and workplaces. The teams started from several descriptions of daily lifestyles, and developed specific building characteristics as the place settings for these narratives. In addition to the characterization of the physical environment, we also speculate as to the forces that would be influential in making these changes. Further reflection was made on the possible unintended consequences of these changes. The rationale for this exercise was to broaden the discussion on future energy use by looking at future scenarios in the context of everyday life.

What to Look for in the Accumulator Core Cooling Signal Suppression Measurements (open access)

What to Look for in the Accumulator Core Cooling Signal Suppression Measurements

This document explains what to look for in the signal suppression display produced by program P192 Pbar Accumulator Core Cooling Suppression Measurement. First we will give a quick overview of beam cooling and why we measure signal suppression. Beam cooling is a technique whereby the physical size and energy spread of a particle beam circulating in a storage ring is reduced without any accompanying beam loss. The goal is to compress the same number of particles into a beam of smaller size and energy spread. This is desirable for the Accumulator as it compensates for various mechanisms leading to growth of beamsize and/or loss of stored particles and makes space available so that more beam can be stored. It also allows us to provide a low emittance beam through the Main Injector into the Tevatron in order to maximize the collision rate. For further information on specific stochastic cooling systems see Chapter 5 of the Antiproton Source Rookie Book.

What's Up With Duct Tape (open access)

What's Up With Duct Tape

Recent research suggests that almost any tape can be made to work for a core-to-collar joint when perfectly applied. Given all the better choices available and all the problems that can and do occur in the field, we would not recommend that cloth-backed (natural) rubber-adhesive tapes be used, unless they can pass a suitable E2343 test. If visual degradation is an important factor, Oriented Polypropylene (OPP) and cloth-backed tapes should be avoided. While tapes that fail usually show visual degradation, the converse is not always true. We speculate, however, that visually degraded tapes are more likely to be susceptible to damage from vibration and other mechanical stresses. Conventional nylon straps are quite prone to fail at higher temperatures, but no systematic studies have yet been done across product classes. UL has proposed a new standard for straps, but the protocol for the current UL test does not, however, suggest that it would be a good indicator of durability. Products meeting the new UL standard for straps should be independently tested for the failure modes observed in the field and laboratory to determine if that test is a reasonable indicator of durability. Until a suitable test for strap durability exists, they …
