Volatile organic compounds in indoor air: A review ofconcentrations measured in North America since 1990

Central tendency and upper limit concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) measured in indoor air are summarized and reviewed. Data were obtained from published cross-sectional studies of residential and office buildings conducted in North America from 1990through the present. VOC concentrations in existing residences reported in 12 studies comprise the majority of the data set. Central tendency and maximum concentrations are compared between new and existing residences and between existing residences and office buildings. Historical changes in indoor VOC concentrations since the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 are explored by comparing the current data set with two published reviews of previous data obtained primarily in the 1980s. These historical comparisons suggest average indoor concentrations of some toxic air contaminants, such as 1,1,1-trichloroethane have decreased.

DISPERSION ANALYSIS OF RADIATION/THERMAL FRONTS WITH FULL RESOLVED SPECTRAL OPACITY VARIATION.

The radiation transport and linearized thermal energy equations have been analyzed to find the temporal dependence of the component modes in a radiation/thermal front. The fully resolved spectral variation of the opacity as a function of energy, as well as the exact time and angular dependence, is treated in this work. As we are able to study arbitrarily complicated opacity spectra, we stress the importance of the new results as a check on the effect of using opacity averages.

Laser Hazard Analysis for Ultra-Fast Sub-Nanosecond, Mode-Locked Near Infrared Lasers Operated with Pulse Repetition Frequencies Above the Critical Frequency

Ultra fast, sub-nanosecond (picosecond to femtosecond) duration, laser pulses present unique challenges when performing laser safety analysis involving mode-locked lasers, which operate at pulse repetition frequencies above the critical frequency in the near infrared wavelength bands. Two specific cases are presented, one such case that agrees and one that disagrees with the general rule on critical frequency. The results show that in all cases the appropriate maximum permissible exposure is always the smallest of the values calculated from ANSI rule 1, 2 and 3.

Laser Safety and Hazard Analysis for the Trailer (B70) Based AURA Laser System

A laser safety and hazard analysis was performed for the AURA laser system based on the 2000 version of the American National Standards Institute's (ANSI) Standard Z136.1, for ''Safe Use of Lasers'' and the 2000 version of the ANSI Standard Z136.6, for ''Safe Use of Lasers Outdoors''. The trailer based AURA laser system is a mobile platform, which is used to perform laser interaction experiments and tests at various national test sites. The trailer (B70) based AURA laser system is generally operated on the United State Air Force Starfire Optical Range (SOR) at Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB), New Mexico. The laser is used to perform laser interaction testing inside the laser trailer as well as outside the trailer at target sites located at various distances from the exit telescope. In order to protect personnel, who work inside the Nominal Hazard Zone (NHZ), from hazardous laser emission exposures it was necessary to determine the Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) for each laser wavelength (wavelength bands) and calculate the appropriate minimum Optical Density (OD{sub min}) of the laser safety eyewear used by authorized personnel and the Nominal Ocular Hazard Distance (NOHD) to protect unauthorized personnel who may have violated the boundaries of …

Laser Safety Audit and Inventory System Database

A laser safety auditing and inventory system has been in use at Sandia National Laboratories--Albuquerque for the past five years and has recently been considered for adoption by Sandia National Laboratories--Livermore. The system utilizes the ''Microsoft Access'' database application, part of the Office 2000 software package. Audit and inventory data is available on-line for ready access by laser users. Data is updated weekly to provide users with current information relating to laser facility audits and laser inventories.

At {nu}Fact'02, the muon-based neutrino factory was confronted with existing and planned neutrino facilities. When it was first discussed in 1999 in Lyon [1], it raised great enthusiasm, especially because it was thought to be the only machine capable of measuring CP violation in the leptonic sector. Since that time the pendulum has partially swung back. Two successive detailed studies [2, 3] have shown that a neutrino Factory and the needed R&D were both expensive. In terms of present experiments, neutrino oscillations have been confirmed at SuperK and SNO and results are soon expected from KamLAND. K2K, MniBOONE, MINOS and CNGS are going ahead and new perspectives have been opened by off-axis pion-based neutrino beams and the approval of the high intensity Japanese Hadron Facility. Crests and troughs of a wave are common in long term projects. They are even healthy because they force us to scrutinize the first ideas and sometimes to invent new ones to reach a realistic and affordable design. This analysis has been applied to target systems (section 2), RF capture and cooling of the muons (section 4) and accelerators (section 5). EXACT SOLUTION OF HEAT CONDUCTION IN A TWO-DOMAIN COMPOSITE CYLINDER WITH AN ORTHOTROPIC OUTER LAYER.

The transient exact solution of heat conduction in a two-domain composite cylinder is developed using the separation of variables technique. The inner cylinder is isotropic and the outer cylindrical layer is orthotropic. Temperature solutions are obtained for boundary conditions of the first and second kinds at the outer surface of the orthotropic layer. These solutions are applied to heat flow calorimeters modeling assuming that there is heat generation due to nuclear reactions in the inner cylinder. Heat flow calorimeter simulations are carried out assuming that the inner cylinder is filled with plutonium oxide powder. The first objective in these simulations is to predict the onset of thermal equilibrium of the calorimeter with its environment. Two types of boundary conditions at the outer surface of the orthotropic layer are used to predict thermal equilibrium. The procedure developed to carry out these simulations can be used as a guideline for the design of calorimeters. Another important application of these solutions is on the estimation of thermophysical properties of orthotropic cylinders. The thermal conductivities in the vertical, radial and circumferential directions of the orthotropic outer layer can be estimated using this exact solution and experimental data. Domestic Energy Scenarios

This report attempts to organize and evaluate scenarios of markets and technologies that could impact renewable and distributed electricity-generating technologies during the next 20-100 years in the United States. For the purposes of this report, scenarios are defined broadly as any projection or forecast that helps illuminate the potential of Renewable Electric Technologies (RETs) in the United States. Scenarios vary widely in terms of their scope-some focus on supply of fuels or narrow segments of markets with limited timeframes, while others are broader in scope and time span. There are several factors that influence the market penetration of renewable energy and distributed generation technologies. Most notable among these are natural gas prices, technology improvements, and policy measures. Natural gas prices are important because most new generating capacity, as well as marginal generation units, generally are natural-gas fired. Assumptions about the rate of improvement in renewable and distributed generation technologies can also have a significant impact on market penetration. Finally, policy measures that support these technologies, such as tax credits or interconnection standards, can contribute to their accelerated adoption.

Construction and Testing of a Low-power Cryostat for MARS

A low-power cryostat was designed and built for the Multi-sensor Airborne Radiation Survey (MARS) project for the purpose of housing a close-packed high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector array of 14 HPGe detectors. The power consumption of the cold mass in the cryostat was measured to be 4.07(11) watts, sufficient for 5.5 days of continuous operation using only 8 liters of liquid nitrogen. Temperatures throughout the cryostat were measured by platinum resistance temperature detectors. These measurements were used to determine the emissivity of the copper used in the floating radiation shield and outer cryostat wall, which was constructed using chemically cleaned and passivated copper metal. Using a PNNL-developed passivation process, an emissivity of 2.5(3)% was achieved for copper.

Measurement of Lifetime and Decay-Width Difference in B0s -> J/psi phi Decays

The authors measure the mean lifetime, {tau} = 2/({Lambda}{sub L} + {Lambda}{sub H}), and the decay-width difference, {Delta}{Lambda} = {Lambda}{sub L} - {Lambda}{sub H}, of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B{sub s}{sup 0} meson, B{sub sL}{sup 0} and B{sub sH}{sup 0}, in B{sub s}{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi}{phi} decays using 1.7 fb{sup -1} of data collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p{bar p} collider. Assuming CP conservation, a good approximation for the B{sub s}{sup 0} system in the standard model, they obtain {Delta}{Lambda} = 0.076{sub -0.063}{sup +0.059}(stat.) {+-} 0.006(syst.) ps{sup -1} and {tau} = 1.52 {+-} 0.04(stat.) {+-} 0.02(syst.) ps, the most precise measurements to date. The constraints on the weak phase and {Delta}{Lambda} are consistent with CP conservation.

Measurement of Resonance Parameters of Orbitally Excited Narrow B^0 Mesons

The authors report a measurement of resonance parameters of the orbitally excited (L = 1) narrow B{sup 0} mesons in decays to B{sup (*)+}{pi}{sup -} using 1.7 fb{sup -1} of data collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The mass and width of the B*{sub 2}{sup 0} state are measured to be m(B*{sub 2}{sup 0}) = 5740.2{sub -1.8}{sup +1.7}(stat.){sub -0.8}{sup +0.9}(syst.) MeV/c{sup 2} and {Lambda}(B*{sub 2}{sup 0}) = 22.7{sub -3.2}{sup +3.8}(stat.){sub -10.2}{sup +3.2}(syst.) MeV/c{sub 2}. The mass difference between the B*{sub 2}{sup 0} and B{sub 1}{sup 0} states is measured to be 14.9{sub -2.5}{sup +2.2}(stat.){sub -1.4}{sup +1.2}(syst.) MeV/c{sup 2}, resulting in a B{sub 1}{sup 0} mass of 5725.3{sub -2.2}{sup +1.6}(stat.){sub -1.5}{sup +1.4}(syst.) MeV/c{sup 2}. This is currently the most precise measurement of the masses of these states and the first measurement of the B*{sub 2}{sup 0} width.

Search for the Flavor Changing Neutral Current Decay t $\to Zq$ in $p \bar{p}$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$

We report a search for the flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) decay of the top quark t {yields} Zq (q = u, c) in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.9 fb{sup -1} collected by the CDF II detector. This decay is strongly suppressed in the standard model (SM) and a signal at the Tevatron would be an indication of physics beyond the SM. Using Z+ {ge} 4 jet final state candidate events, both with and without an identified bottom quark jet, we discriminate signal from background by exploring kinematic constraints present in FCNC events and obtain an upper limit of {Beta}(t {yields} Zq) < 3.7% at 95% C.L.

Measurement of b-jet Shapes in Inclusive Jet Production in p anti-p Collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

We present a measurement of the shapes of b-jets using 300 pb{sup -1} of data obtained with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II) in p{bar p} collisions at center of mass energy {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. This measurement covers a wide transverse momentum range, from 52 to 300 GeV/c. Samples of heavy-flavor enhanced jets together with inclusive jets are used to extract the average shapes of b-jets. The b-jets are expected to be broader than inclusive jets. Moreover, b-jets containing a single b-quark are expected to be narrower than those containing a b{bar b} pair from gluon splitting. The measured b-jet shapes are found to be significantly broader than expected from the pythia and HERWIG Monte Carlo simulations. This effect may arise from an underestimation of the fraction of b-jets originating from gluon splitting in these simulations.

Measurement of the cross section for W-boson production in association with jets in ppbar collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

We present a measurement of the cross section for W-boson production in association with jets in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 320 pb{sup -1} collected with the CDF II detector. W bosons are identified in their electron decay channel and jets are reconstructed using a cone algorithm. For each W + {ge} n-jet sample (n = 1-4) we measure {sigma}(p{bar p} {yields} W + {ge} n-jet) x {Beta}(W {yields} e{nu}) with respect to the transverse energy E{sub T} of the nth-highest E{sub T} jet above 20 GeV, for a restricted W {yields} e{nu} decay phase space. The cross sections, corrected for all detector effects, can be directly compared to particle level W + jet(s) predictions. We present here comparisons to leading order and next-to-leading order predictions.

Measurement of the $\ttbar$ Production Cross Section in 2 fb$^{-1}$ of $\ppbar$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV Using Lepton Plus Jets Events with Soft Muon b-Tagging

We present a measurement of the t{bar t} production cross section in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV using events containing a high transverse momentum electron or muon, three or more jets, and missing transverse energy. Events consistent with t{bar t} decay are found by identifying jets containing candidate heavy-flavor semileptonic decays to muons. The measurement uses a CDF Run II data sample corresponding to 2 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity. Based on 248 candidate events with three or more jets and an expected background of 79.5 {+-} 5.3 events, we measure a production cross section of 9.1 {+-} 1.6 pb.

Observation of the Decay B+-(c) ---> J/psi pi+- and Measurement of the B+-(c) Mass

The B{sub c}{sup {+-}} meson is observed through the decay B{sub c}{sup {+-}} {yields} J/{psi} {pi}{sup {+-}}, in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.4 fb{sup -1} recorded by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. A signal of 108 {+-} 15 candidates is observed, with a significance that exceeds 8{sigma}. The mass of the B{sub c}{sup {+-}} meson is measured to be 6275.6 {+-} 2.9(stat.) {+-} 2.5(syst.) MeV/c{sup 2}.

Search for doubly charged Higgs bosons with lepton-flavour-violating decays involving tau leptons

The authors search for pair production of doubly charged Higgs particles (H{sup {+-}{+-}}) followed by decays into electron-tau (e{tau}) and muon-tau ({mu}{tau}) pairs using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 350 pb{sup -1} collected from {bar p}p collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV by the CDF II experiment. They search separately for cases where three or four final-state leptons are detected, and then combine the results into limits for each exclusive flavor decay mode of the H{sup {+-}{+-}}. Assuming 100% branching ratios of the H{sup {+-}{+-}} to left-handed e{tau} ({mu}{tau}) pairs, they set an H{sup {+-}{+-}} lower mass limit of 114 (112) GeV/c{sup 2} at the 95% confidence level (C.L.).
