Daylighting in Laboratories; Laboratories for the 21st Century: Best Practices (open access)

Daylighting in Laboratories; Laboratories for the 21st Century: Best Practices

This best practices guide describes how designing a building to include daylighting can save energy and utility costs (especially energy costs for electric lighting) while improving productivity and morale among a building's occupants. Several examples are given of the effective use of daylighting in new laboratory buildings. The publication is one of an ongoing series for''Laboratories for the 21st Century,'' a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program. It is intended for all those who plan, design, and construct public and private-sector laboratory buildings.

Energy Recovery for Ventilation Air in Laboratories; Laboratories for the 21st Century: Best Practices (open access)

Energy Recovery for Ventilation Air in Laboratories; Laboratories for the 21st Century: Best Practices

This publication is one of a series of best practices guides for ''Laboratories for the 21st Century,'' a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program. It is intended for all those who plan, design, and construct public and private-sector laboratory buildings. Laboratory buildings typically consume 5 to 10 times more energy for heating, cooling, and fans than most office buildings, because they need to be ventilated so well, primarily for safety reasons. This publication describes how using air-to-air energy recovery methods-such as enthalpy (desiccant) wheels, heat pipes, or run-around loops-allows laboratory building designers to specify smaller heating and cooling systems. This in turn reduces the total amount of energy they use.

Small Wind Electric Systems: A Guide Produced for the Tennessee Valley Authority (Revised) (Brochure) (open access)

Small Wind Electric Systems: A Guide Produced for the Tennessee Valley Authority (Revised) (Brochure)

Small Wind Electric Systems: A Guide Produced for the Tennessee Valley Authority provides consumers with information to help them determine whether a small wind electric system can provide all or a portion of the energy they need for their home or business based on their wind resource, energy needs, and their economics. Topics discussed in the guide include how to make a home more energy efficient, how to choose the correct turbine size, the parts of a wind electric system, how to determine whether enough wind resource exists, how to choose the best site for a turbine, how to connect a system to the utility grid, and whether it's possible to become independent of the utility grid using wind energy. In addition, the cover of the guide contains a regional wind resource map and a list of incentives and contacts for more information.

On-Site Power Systems for Laboratories; Laboratories for the 21st Century: Best Practices (Brochure) (open access)

On-Site Power Systems for Laboratories; Laboratories for the 21st Century: Best Practices (Brochure)

This publication is one of a series on energy-efficient best practices for modern laboratories; it was prepared for''Laboratories for the 21st Century,'' a joint program of the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program. It is intended for those who plan, design, and construct public and private-sector laboratory buildings. The aim is to use the most energy-efficient and reliable strategies--such as combined heat and power systems, photovoltaics, and fuel cells--to produce power on site and reduce a laboratory's use of utility-generated power, as well as the greenhouse gases associated with burning fossil fuels for power production. Examples are included.

Brochure for the Dekker Encyclopedia of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, 2nd edition, 6 volumes set

Brochure for the second edition where the preface states: The science of the ultra small nanoscience has dramatically exploded during the last few years, and the technologies operating with ultra small things the nanotechnologies acquired quickly a firm position in today s world of business, technological development, and public perception. Several factors contributed to the acceleration of scientific knowledge and technological progress in the last decades, among which the rapid development of fast computers, availability of high-resolution analytical techniques, and the progress of molecular biology and genetics are probably the most important. The result was an unprecedented expansion of the frontiers of science, which empowered the human genius with unlimited options of top-down and bottom-up methods for manipulation of materials structure and control of properties at multiple levels, from atomic to molecular, supramolecular, and biomolecular. Already a distinctive mark of 21st century, nanoscience and nanotechnology will certainly have a steadily increasing influence on the quality of life and the environment of this Planet for centuries to come. Dekker Encyclopedia of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Second Edition provides a comprehensive and detailed review, from multiple angles, of major developments in the human s quest for understanding and mastering of physical, chemical and …
