Toxic chemical syndrome: body burden and immune parameters affected by environmental chemicals

The purpose of the present study was to determine: (1) that dental office personnel would be exposed to more toxic chemicals in the workplace than the non-dental office controls; (2) that exposure should lead to a reduction in the efficiency of the immune system in the individuals in the dental office; and (3) the immunological deficit should manifest itself in psychological and/or physiological pathology as measured on the Profile of Mood States (POMS) and Bender Gestalt.

Multiple solutions for semilinear elliptic boundary value problems (open access)

Multiple solutions for semilinear elliptic boundary value problems

In this paper results concerning a semilinear elliptic boundary value problem are proven. This problem has five solutions when the range of the derivative of the nonlinearity ƒ includes the first two eigenvalues. The existence and multiplicity or radially symmetric solutions under suitable conditions on the nonlinearity when Ω is a ball in R^N.

Raman studies of reorientational dynamics in liquids (open access)

Raman studies of reorientational dynamics in liquids

Raman and/or infrared (IR) bandshape analysis to probe molecular dynamics in liquids has become a rapidly expanding field of study in recent years. Determination of spinning and tumbling diffusion constants, Dι and D⊥, which characterize the reorientation of symmetric-top moleclues has been successfully studied in a number of D6H and D3H molecules. For molecules of CV3 symmetry, however, previous attempts to extract spinning diffusion constants from Raman doubly degenerate vibrations (E mode) have proved unsuccessful. Presented here is a new methodology which resolves the problems encountered by former researchers through calculation of Dι utilizing the narrower Lorentzian component of E vibrations.

An algebraic characterization of stability groups (open access)

An algebraic characterization of stability groups

The goal of this paper is to establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a subgroup of the full homeomorphism group of a manifold to be the stability group of a point in the underlying space. Such subgroups are useful in identifying the underlying space in terms of its homeomorphism group even in cases in which this space is not necessarily a manifold. Thus, stability groups are useful in classifying various spaces.

Synthesis and reactions of poly(ethynyldialkylsilanes) (open access)

Synthesis and reactions of poly(ethynyldialkylsilanes)

A nucleophilic cleavage reaction of 2,2,5,5,8,8-hexamethyl-2,5,8-trisilanona-3,6-diyne, I, with several bases, occurs rapidly at room temperature in both polar and non-polar solvents. An attack occurs exclusively at the central silicon regardless of the steric requirements of the bases (alkyllithium). The major products from the reaction of I with tert-butyllithium followed by hydrolysis were 2,2,5,5,6,6-hexamethyl-2,5-disilahepta-3-yne, II, and 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-2,5-disilahexa-3-yne, VI.
