This report describes the Characterization of Fracture-Matrix Interaction Along Fast Pathways in Welded Tuff, Yucca Mountain, Nevada.

The following report is the second compilation of reports describing the geology of the Basin and Range to Colorado Plateau Transition (BARCO) area.

Interview with Homer L. Haile, an Army Air Corps veteran (489th Squadron, 2nd Air Division, 8th Air Force), concerning his experiences as a crew member of a B-24 in the European Theater during World War II. Stateside training, raid to Kiel, Germany; raid to Oschersleben, Germany; other raids.

A total of 15 water-supply wells are currently being used at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). The purpose of this report is to bring together the information gleaned from investigations of these water-supply wells. This report should serve as a reference on well construction and completion, static water levels, lithologic and hydrologic characteristics of aquifers penetrated, and general water quality of water-supply wells at the NTS. Possible sources for contamination of the water-supply wells are also evaluated. Existing wells and underground nuclear tests conducted near (within 25 meters (m)) or below the water table within 2 kilometers (km) of a water-supply were located and their hydrogeologic relationship to the water-supply well determined.

The purpose of this study is to investigate anisotropy of mechanical properties, namely, compressive strength and modulus, for Tiva Canyon welded tuff from the starter tunnel at Yucca Mountain. Mechanical properties of Tiva Canyon Tuff are needed for the design of the ramps and drifts within the Tiva Canyon horizon. Approximately one cubic foot block samples, all of which were from the thermo -- mechanical unit TCw, were obtained from a muck pile containing excavated rock from the starter tunnel. Specimens were cored from the block samples in two distinct orientations: parallel and perpendicular to the lithophysal cavity orientation. Since lithophysal cavity orientation is predominantly horizontal in the field, parallel specimens can be considered horizontal and perpendicular specimens vertical with respect to the rock mass. The specimens were NX sized (5.4 cm diameter) and had a length-to-diameter ratio of 2:1. The air dried specimens were tested at room temperature in a triaxial chamber at confining pressures of 0.1, 5, and 10 MPa, and at a compressive axial strain rate of 10{sup {minus}5} s{sup {minus}}. The Young`s Modulus values were calculated by a least squares fit of stress - strain data between 10 and 50% of the ultimate strength.

This dissertation is an attempt to give a picture of the Nevada frontier journalist Samuel L. Clemens and the surroundings in which he worked. It is also an assessment of the extent to which Clemens (and his alter ego Twain) can be considered a serious journalist and the extent to which he violated the very principles he championed.

The following report focuses on the geology of the Tertiary volcanic rock formation in the Sleeper gold-silver deposit of Nevada and develops a framework for exploration and genetic models.

This report summarizes the environmental surveillance activities conducted by Sandia National Laboratories, the US Environmental Protection Agency, and Reynolds Electrical and Engineering Company for the Tonopah Test Range operated by Sandia National Laboratories. Sandia National Laboratories` responsibility for environmental monitoring results extend to those activities performed by Sandia National Laboratories or under its direction. Results from other environmental monitoring activities are included to provide a measure of completeness in reporting. Other environmental compliance programs such as the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, environmental permits, and environmental restoration and waste management programs are also included in this report, prepared for the US Department of Energy in compliance with DOE Order 5400.1.

The following report presents geochemical data results of 34 elements in 951 samples of altered and mineralized rock samples from mines, prospects, dumps, and drillholes in the Tonopah quadrangle, Nevada.

Progress reports are presented for the following tasks: overview and progress of waste package project and container design; waste container design considerations (criticality analysis, experimental drift model); waste container alternate design considerations; thermal simulation of high level nuclear waste canister emplacement; structural analysis and design of nuclear waste package canister; robotic manipulation of the nuclear waste container; investigation of stress in a circular tunnel due to overburden & thermal loading of horizontally placed 21PWR multi-purpose canisters; investigation of faulted tunnel models by combined photoelasticity and finite element analysis; and transport phenomena in the near field.

Proceedings of a workshop held in February 1990 called "Tertiary Stratigraphy of Highly Extended Terranes, Southern Basin and Range" at the Desert Research Center of the California State University System, Soda Springs, near Baker, California. This volume is a collection of stratigraphic data and interpretation.
