Characterization of the Specificity of DNA Uptake and Transformation by Naturally Competent Acinetobacter Calcoaceticus (open access)

Characterization of the Specificity of DNA Uptake and Transformation by Naturally Competent Acinetobacter Calcoaceticus

Although cultures of A. calcoaceticus BD413 are naturally competent at all growth phases, genetic markers can only be successfully transformed by DNA from the genus Acinetobacter. Transformation frequencies of nearly 1.2% were obtained with pcaA mutants were incubated in liquid culture with wild-type DNA.

Brain-Reactive Antibodies: Molecular Specificity and Relationship to Biological Aging (open access)

Brain-Reactive Antibodies: Molecular Specificity and Relationship to Biological Aging

Brain-reactive antibodies (BRA) increase in frequency with age in several mammalian species and may be involved in the pathogenesis of age-related dementia. In this experiment, the molecular specificity of BRA in mouse sera was determined using an immunoblot assay, and the relationship of BRA to longevity was studied by comparing the rate of formation of specific BRAs in diet restricted C57BL/6NNia, B6D2F1/NNia, and DBA/2NNia, genotypes which differ markedly in life-span.

The principle of "sankofa" in elementary music instruction in southern Ghana: selected school personnel's views of and their role in its implementation (open access)

The principle of "sankofa" in elementary music instruction in southern Ghana: selected school personnel's views of and their role in its implementation

The study ascertained elementary school teachers' and supervisors' views about their role in the implementation of Sankofa (Go back and retrieve) in school music. Sankofa mandates the integration of distinctive Ghanian traditional values and practices with Western educational concepts in the school curriculum. In music, it calls for the fusion of multi-ethnic musics of Ghana with Western musical concepts in public school music instruction. Some concerns expressed by Ghanian music educators regarding teachers' negative attitudes toward Sankofa in public school music had prompted the study.

Particle size distribution and qualitative/quantitative analysis of trace metals in the combustion gas and fly ash of coal/refuse derived fuel (open access)

Particle size distribution and qualitative/quantitative analysis of trace metals in the combustion gas and fly ash of coal/refuse derived fuel

This work includes two different areas of research. Both areas are related to the combustion of the binder-enhanced densified refuse derived fuel (bdRDF) with high sulfur coal and examining trace elements. The first area of this work involved studying the trace metals in the combustion gas of bdRDF/coal blend and the effect of the binder, CA(OH)2, on reducing the trace elements emissions. The second area of work involved studying the trace elements in the fly ash and the effect of the dRDF and the binder of trace metals.

Visual Works of Art as a Stimulus for Linguistic References and Historical Time Conceptions in Third Grade Students

This study investigated the relationship between visual cues in art reproductions, simple linguistic time vocabulary and children's temporal understandings. During interview sessions, 33 third-grade students attending two suburban schools were asked to place three art postcard reproductions sets in chronological order. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and coded for analysis. Linguistic references used to represent historical time and visual cues within the art postcards which caused students to place art works in a particular time sequence were documented.

Constellations is a single movement work that explores the color between acoustic instruments and computer generated sounds. It is scored for four flutes (two doubling on piccolos), two oboes, two bassoons, eight B-flat clarinets, two bass B-flat clarinets; two alto saxophones, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone; four trumpets in B-flat, four horns in F; three trombones, bass trombone; two tubas;piano; six percussionists; and contrabass. The duration of the work is nine minutes and twenty-eight seconds. Mapping of stellar constellations provide the primary material for all pitch and harmonic progressions throughout the work. Software synthesis and digital sampling techniques coalesce to produce the computer music on tape.

The Possibility of Branch Conformation in Azotobacter Vinelandii Chromosomal DNA Carrying Multiple Gene Copies and Its Folded State in the Cell

Chromosomal DNA of A. vinelandii thought to carry multiple gene copies was examined in efforts to visualize its chromosomal structure using electron microscopy. The chromosomal DNA of A. vinelandii may have multiple circular genomic units carrying multiple copies of genes. Three possible branch construction schemes and their replication modes are postulated in this study.
