3-D electromagnetic modeling of wakefields in accelerator components (open access)

3-D electromagnetic modeling of wakefields in accelerator components

We discuss the use of 3-D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) electromagnetic codes for modeling accelerator components. Computational modeling of cylindrically symmetric structures such as induction accelerator cells has been very successful in predicting the wake potential and wake impedances of these structures, but full 3-D modeling of complex structures has been limited due to substantial computer resources required for a full 3-D model. New massively parallel 3-D time domain electromagnetic codes now under development using conforming unstructured meshes allow a substantial increase in the geometric fidelity of the structures being modeled. Development of these new codes are discussed in context of applicability to accelerator problems. Various 3-D structures are tested with an existing cubical cell FDTD code and wake impedances compared with simple analytic models for the structures; results will be used as benchmarks for testing the new time time domain codes. Structures under consideration include a stripline beam position monitor as well as circular and elliptical apertures in circular waveguides. Excellent agreement for monopole and dipole impedances with models were found for these structures below the cutoff frequency of the beam line.

45-day safety screen results and final report for Tank 241-C-203, Auger samples 95 AUG-020 and 95-AUG-021 (open access)

45-day safety screen results and final report for Tank 241-C-203, Auger samples 95 AUG-020 and 95-AUG-021

This document serves as the 45-day report deliverable for the tank C-203 auger samples collected on April 5, 1995 (samples 95-AUG-20 and 95-AUG-021). As no secondary analyses were required and no other analyses have been requested, this document also serves as the final report for C-203 auger sampling. Each sample was received, extruded, and analyzed by the 222-S Laboratories in accordance with the Tank Characterization Plan (TCP) referenced below. Included in this report are the primary safety screening results (DSC, TGA, and alpha) and density results. The worklists and raw data are included in this report. Photographs of the auger samples were taken during extrusion and, although not included in this report, are available.

241-BY-106 sampling test plan (open access)

241-BY-106 sampling test plan

This plan outlines the approach to be taken on obtaining the second core from 241-BY-106, riser 10B, using the Rotary Mode Core Sample Truck (RMCST). The purpose for obtaining the second core is to retrieve the final segments to determine ferrocyanide content. The first core acquired from riser 10B resulted in inadequate sample recovery for the labs to perform the required analysis. Thirteen samples were taken, with recovery varying from 0 to 100%. The most likely contributors to poor sample recovery have been identified and explained on a sample-by sample basis as outlined in this report. This information has been used to devise the approach to be taken in obtaining the second core.

105K West Isolation Barrier Acceptance Test results (open access)

105K West Isolation Barrier Acceptance Test results

The objective of this document is to report and interpret the findings of the isolation barrier acceptance tests performed in 105KW/100K. The tests were performed in accordance with the test plan and acceptance test procedure. The test report contains the test data. This document compares the test data against the criteria. A discussion of the leak rate analytical characterization describes how the flow characteristics flow rate will be determined using the test data from the test report. Two modes of water loss were considered; basin and/or discharge chute leakage, and evaporation. An initial test established baseline leakage data and instrumentation performance. Test 2 evaluated the sealing performance of the isolation barrier by inducing an 11 in. (27.9 cm) level differential across the barrier. The leak rate at this 11 in. (27.9 cm) level is extrapolated to the 16 ft. (4.9 m) level differential postulated in the DBE post seismic event. If the leak rate, adjusted for evaporation and basin leakage (determined from Test 1), is less than the SAR limit of 1,500 gph (5,680 lph) at a 16 ft (4.9 m) level differential, the barriers pass the acceptance test.

(The 1990 run of the WA80 experiment) (open access)

(The 1990 run of the WA80 experiment)

The traveler spent six weeks at CERN participating in the 1990 run of the WA80 experiment. The traveler concentrated on trigger electronics for the first two weeks and on operation of the experiment for much of the next four. New electronics designed at ORNL for reading out the new BGO spectrometer were tested with the BGO in beam. Improvements were made, in collaboration with the ORNL engineers who designed the electronics. Plans were made for constructing the electronics in large quantities. Conversations were had with other members of WA80 about the analysis of results from this year's run and our plans for the 1991/1992 runs proposed for CERN. Lengthy conversations were had about the draft of a first paper concerning limits on direct photon production. Finally, the traveler attended an all-day session of the dilepton working group chartered to consider dilepton and photon experiments using heavy-ion beams in CERN's to-be-proposed Large Hadron Collider (LHC). At this meeting the traveler presented recent results from the group working on such a proposal for RHIC and updated his earlier presentation of June 1990 in this working group.

2l-nl{prime} x-ray transitions from neonlike charge states of the row 5 metals with 39 {le} Z {le} 46 (open access)

2l-nl{prime} x-ray transitions from neonlike charge states of the row 5 metals with 39 {le} Z {le} 46

X-ray spectra of 2l-2l{prime} transitions with 3 {le} n {le} 12 in the row five transition metals zirconium (Z = 40), niobium (Z = 41), molybdenum (Z = 42) and palladium (Z = 46) from charge states around neonlike have been observed from Alcator C-Mod plasmas. Accurate wavelengths ({+-} .2 m{angstrom}) have been determined by comparison with neighboring argon, chlorine and sulfur lines with well known wavelengths. Line identifications have been made by comparison to ab initio atomic structure calculations, using a fully relativistic, parametric potential code. For neonlike ions, calculated wavelengths and oscillator strengths are tabulated for 2p-nd transitions in Y (Z = 39), Tc (Z = 43), Ru (Z = 44) and Rh (Z = 45) with n = 6 and 7. The magnitude of the configuration interaction between the (2p{sup 5}){sub 1/2}6d{sub 3/2} J = 1 level and the (2p{sup 5}){sub 3/2}7D{sub 5/2} J = 1 levels is demonstrated as a function of atomic number for successive neonlike ions. Measured spectra of selected transitions in the aluminum-, magnesium-, sodium- and fluorine like isosequences are also shown.
