Characterization of ultradispersed aluminum
Samples of ultradispersed Al were received, which were produced by electrically exploding Al wires in argon. These samples comprised very small particles that were not significantly oxidized and that were stable in air. Particle morphology were studied with SE, micropycnometry, and gas adsorption surface area. Composition were determined using various techniques, as were thermal stability and reaction exotherms. The inexplicable reports of an Al-Ar compound and of an exothermic reaction were not confirmed. The material is a stable, nonoxidized, small-particle, highly reactive form of aluminum that is of interest in energetic materials formulations.

A Continuous Automated Vault Inventory System (CAVIS) for accountability monitoring of stored nuclear materials
Nearly all facilities that store hazardous (radioactive or non-radioactive) materials must comply with prevailing federal, state, and local laws. These laws usually have components that require periodic physical inspections to insure that all materials remain safely and securely stored. The inspections are generally labor intensive, slow, put personnel at risk, and only find anomalies after they have occurred. The system described in this paper was developed for monitoring stored nuclear materials resulting from weapons dismantlement, but its applications extend to any storage facility that meets the above criteria. The traditional special nuclear material (SNM) accountability programs, that are currently used within most of the Department of Energy (DOE) complex, require the physical entry of highly trained personnel into SNM storage vaults. This imposes the need for additional security measures, which typically mandate that extra security personnel be present while SNM inventories are performed. These requirements increase labor costs and put additional personnel at risk to radiation exposure. In some cases, individuals have received radiation exposure equivalent to the annual maximum during just one inventory verification. With increasing overhead costs, the current system is rapidly becoming too expensive to operate, the need for an automated method of inventory verification is evident. …

Design and fabrication of a prototype sensor system for waste storage tank characterization. CRADA final report for CRADA Number ORNL92-0094
On February 15--16 1994, ORNL and MTI presented a technology demonstration showcasing the results of a CRADA between the two organizations. The CRADA project entailed design and development of a structured light mapping system suitable for deployment in underground waste storage tanks. The CRADA expanded upon a system previously designed and deployed at the DOE Fernald site by ORNL. Enhancements in the new system include: a factor of ten increase in mapping speed; radiation and environmental hardening sufficient for use in the Hanford single-shell tanks (up to 5,000 rad/hr, pH = 12, high heat, etc.); capability to map and display data for both vertical surfaces, such as pipes, and horizontal surfaces; rugged, compact design that can be deployed through a ten centimeter riser; and a design that can be decontaminated easily after deployment.

Development of a modular integrated control architecture for flexible manipulators. Final report
In April 1994, ORNL and SPAR completed the joint development of a manipulator controls architecture for flexible structure controls under a CRADA between the two organizations. The CRADA project entailed design and development of a new architecture based upon the Modular Integrated Control Architecture (MICA) previously developed by ORNL. The new architecture, dubbed MICA-II, uses an object-oriented coding philosophy to provide a highly modular and expandable architecture for robotic manipulator control. This architecture can be readily ported to control of many different manipulator systems. The controller also provides a user friendly graphical operator interface and display of many forms of data including system diagnostics. The capabilities of MICA-II were demonstrated during oscillation damping experiments using the Flexible Beam Experimental Test Bed at Hanford.

The effect of actinide thin films on the electronic structure and reactivity of various elements
This report summarizes the experimental work carried out at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on the electronic structure and reactivity of uranium thin films on Pd, Pt, Si, graphite, Cu, and Au substrates from 1990 to 1993. The U-Pd system was studied in the most detail because it was the first to be chosen right after the completion of the experimental equipment. We first studied and characterized clean U overlayers and the possible surface reactions between this metal and the substrates studied. We then subjected these systems to reactive conditions such as heating and adsorbing corrosive gases (O{sub 2}, CO, CO{sub 2}, and C{sub 2}H{sub 4}). Finally we investigated the diffusion of U metal and some of its compounds into the substrates. A new technique was developed, based on Auger Electron Spectroscopy, to follow in real time the diffusion of U overlayers into the substrate. The temperature of the sample is ramped linearly up to 900{degrees}C while following the Auger peak intensities of the two components for a given system. Diffusion rates are obtained by differentiating the measured intensity curves, then peaks result corresponding to diffusion processes with different activation energies. This technique bears a strong similarity to thermal desorption …
