Holocene Paleohydrology of the tropical andes from lake records (open access)

Holocene Paleohydrology of the tropical andes from lake records

Two century-scale time series in northern Bolivia constrain the ages of abrupt changes in the physical, geochemical, and biological characteristics of sediments obtained from lakes that formed during deglaciation from the late Pleistocene glacial maximum. The watersheds of Laguna Viscachani (16{degrees}12`S, 68{degrees}07`W, 3780m) and Lago Taypi Chaka Kkota (16{degrees}13`S, 68{degrees}21`W, 4300m), located on the eastern and western slopes of the Cordillera Real, respectively, contain small cirque glaciers. A high-resolution chronology of the lake sediments is provided by 23 AMS {sup 14}C dates of discrete macro-fossils. Late Pleistocene glaciers retreated rapidly, exposing the lake basins between 10,700 and 9700 {sup 14}C yr B.P. The sedimentary facies suggest that after 8900 {sup 14}C B.P. glaciers were absent from the watersheds and remained so during the middle Holocene. An increase in the precipitation-evaporation balance is indicated above unconformities dated to about 2300 {sup 14}C yr B.P. in both Lago Taypi Chaka Kkota and Laguna Viscachani. An abrupt increase in sediment accumulation rated after 1400 {sup 14}C yr B.P. signals the onset of Neoglaciation. A possible link exists between the observed millennial-scale shifts in the regional precipitation- evaporation balance and seasonal shifts in tropical insolation.

Comparison of the total cross sections measurements of CDF and E811 (open access)

Comparison of the total cross sections measurements of CDF and E811

The total cross section at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV has been measured by three groups (CDF, E710, and E811). We think that CDF should quote results based only on our own measurement. We also indicate how to compare cross sections measured by both CDF and D0.

Electronic transport and mixed conductivity in perovskite type oxides (open access)

Electronic transport and mixed conductivity in perovskite type oxides

The goal of the investigation presented in this report is to study the inter-relationship between electrical conductivity, oxidation-reduction kinetics, defect structure, and composition of n- and p-type binary and ternary transition metal oxides. The experimental part of the investigation included specimen preparation, thermogravimetric measurements, X-ray diffraction, thermally stimulated current, DTA/TGA, optical absorption, transmission electron microscopy, electrical conductivity, and Seebeck measurements. The systems studied or being studied are LaMnO{sub 3}-LaCrO{sub 3}-LaCrO{sub 3}, (La,Ca)(Mn,Al)O{sub 3}, Y{sub 1-x}Ca{sub x}CrO{sub 3}, YMnO{sub 3}-CaMnO{sub 3}, and LaMnO{sub 3}-CaMnO{sub 3}.

Progress in stabilization of plutonium and residues since DNFSB recommendation 94-1 (open access)

Progress in stabilization of plutonium and residues since DNFSB recommendation 94-1

There are approximately 100 metric tons of residues at the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site containing approximately 3 metric tons of plutonium. The residues are byproducts of past plutonium operations incinerator ash; pyrochemical salts; graphite; sand, slag, and crucible; and miscellaneous forms of combustibles, glass, metal, and sludges. In September 1993, a report was released (Reference 1) which identified concerns with the chemical stability of the residues and with the integrity of packaging. In May 1997, the Defense Nuclear Facility Safety Board published recommendation 94-1 citing a concern for the residue stability and requiring that the possibly unstable residues be processed within 3 years and all others within 5 years. A risk categorization scheme was developed which assigned a numerical risk to each residue type based on the probability and consequence of occurrence of failures associated with the hazards identified. The residues were ranked for priority of stabilization actions. Urgent concerns were resolved. All residue drums were vented to eliminate the potential for hydrogen and other explosive gas accumulation. Leaded rubber gloves and ion exchange resins were washed to eliminate the explosion potential. An aggressive characterization program was implemented to search for any additional safety or environmental concerns and to …

Bringing the Fuzzy Front End into Focus (open access)

Bringing the Fuzzy Front End into Focus

Technology planning is relatively straightforward for well-established research and development (R and D) areas--those areas in which an organization has a history, the competitors are well understood, and the organization clearly knows where it is going with that technology. What we are calling the fuzzy front-end in this paper is that condition in which these factors are not well understood--such as for new corporate thrusts or emerging areas where the applications are embryonic. While strategic business planning exercises are generally good at identifying technology areas that are key to future success, they often lack substance in answering questions like: (1) Where are we now with respect to these key technologies? ... with respect to our competitors? (2) Where do we want or need to be? ... by when? (3) What is the best way to get there? In response to its own needs in answering such questions, Sandia National Laboratories is developing and implementing several planning tools. These tools include knowledge mapping (or visualization), PROSPERITY GAMES and technology roadmapping--all three of which are the subject of this paper. Knowledge mapping utilizes computer-based tools to help answer Question 1 by graphically representing the knowledge landscape that we populate as compared with …

Innovative Uses for Conventional Radiation Detectors via Pulse Shape Analysis (open access)

Innovative Uses for Conventional Radiation Detectors via Pulse Shape Analysis

In this report we have discussed two applications for digital pulse shape analysis in Ge detectors: Compton suppression and {gamma}-ray imaging. The Compton suppression aspect has been thoroughly studied during the past few years, and a real-time, laboratory-prototype system has been fielded. A summary of results from that set up have been discussed here. The {gamma}-ray imaging aspect, while not yet developed experimentally, looks very promising theoretically as the simulations presented here have shown. Experimental work currently underway at Berkeley (as discussed in section 4.3) should help further guide us towards the proper developmental path.
