Ornithological Survey of the Proposed Geothermal Well Site No. 2 (open access)

Ornithological Survey of the Proposed Geothermal Well Site No. 2

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS 1983) and the State of Hawaii (DLNR 1986) have listed as endangered six forest bird species for the Island of Hawaii. Two of these birds, the O'u (Psittirostra psittacea) and the Hawaiian hawk (Buteo solitarius) may be present within the Geothermal resource sub-zone (Scott et al. 1986). Thus, their presence could impact future development within the resource area. This report presents the results of a bird survey conducted August 11 and 12, 1990 in the sub-zone in and around the proposed well site and pad for True/Mid Pacific Geothermal Well No.2.

The equation of state of liquid Flibe (open access)

The equation of state of liquid Flibe

Flibe (Li{sub 2}BeF{sub 4}) is a candidate material for the liquid blanket in the HYLIFE-2 fusion reactor. The thermodynamic properties of the material are important for the study of thermohydraulic behavior of the concept design, including the compressible analysis of the blanket isochoric heating problem and resulting jet breakup. The equation of state provides the relationship between all the thermodynamic properties. Previously, a soft sphere model of liquid equation of state was used for describing a number of liquid metals. In this paper we have fitted the available experimental data for liquid Flibe with a modified soft sphere model. 5 refs.

A study of potential high band-gap photovoltaic materials for a two step photon intermediate technique in fission energy conversion (open access)

A study of potential high band-gap photovoltaic materials for a two step photon intermediate technique in fission energy conversion

A diamond synthesis chamber and an ion implanter have been constructed. Work has been rapidly progressing and diamond has been synthesized. There are five variables which affect the quality of diamond: (1) mass flow of methane, (2) mass flow of hydrogen, (3) filament temperature, (4) substrate temperature, and (5) substrate material. Enclosed are pictures and data of previous diamond growth experiments. Current work is focused on the conditions which produce the best quality diamond films. In this study, diamond films were deposited using a hot-filament CVD method with boron trioxide (B{sub 2}O{sub 3}) and diphosphorus pentoxide (P{sub 2}O{sub 5}) as the doping sources. P{sub 2}O{sub 5} is the only known effective phosphorus source for forming n-type semiconducting material. An RF generator has been made operation for epitaxial growth of AIN by the chemical vapor deposition method. In initial experiments with a graphite substrate, the RF generator heated the material to a temperature of 1100{degrees}C. A reactor which will use the RF generator has been built for AIN synthesis. The device should be assembled and tested by the end of August. A new process for fabricating platinum silicide photovoltaic cells has been developed. A diffused guard ring has been added to …

The analysis of the Flibe jets in HYLIFE-II (open access)

The analysis of the Flibe jets in HYLIFE-II

In the HYLIFE-2 Inertial Confinement Fusion reactor, an array of Flibe (Li{sub 2}BeFe{sub 4}) jets is designed to protect the chamber from the fusion radiation. During the fusion pulse the Flibe jets sustain an instantaneous neutron and X-ray heating. The high energy neutrons from fusion can penetrate deep into the Flibe jets and the sudden increase in internal energy can induce a great pressure rise inside the jets. The subsequent relaxation of the jets is important for the reactor design, because the configuration of the jets will control the subsequent impact forces of vapor and liquid on the reactor chamber wall. The calculations for the lithium jets in the HYLIFE-1 reactor were done previously by using a compressible flow model with a soft sphere equation of state for lithium. A similar equation of state model for Flibe was recently developed. This model allows us to use the same compressible analysis code to calculate the pressure field in the Flibe jets and to estimate the upper bound of the Flibe tension limit. With these results we can analyze the mechanisms of jet relaxation and breakup. 4 refs., 1 fig.

Measuring the efficacy of a root biobarrier with x-ray computed tomography (open access)

Measuring the efficacy of a root biobarrier with x-ray computed tomography

X-ray computed tomography is a useful tool for investigating soil physical properties nondestructively. There is a need to develop proper calibration relationships between soil properties and the x-ray absorption coefficient. The objective of the work was to evaluate soil factors affecting the x-ray absorption coefficient. Based on a theoretical analysis, experimental data from five soils and on results of several other investigators, it was concluded that for many applications, one calibration relationship is applicable to a wide range of soils. The montmorillinitic clay used in the study required special handling due to the extreme shrinkage of this soil upon drying. Knowledge of chemical composition enables approximations but not exact predictions of the x-ray absorption coefficient. The results suggested some reasonable alternative to exhaustive calibration for each anticipated soil condition. Quantification of root activity in terms of root growth and indirectly through water uptake is necessary for understanding plant growth dynamics. X-ray computed tomography (CT) enables qualitative as well as two quantitative outputs, one of which can lead to conclusions regarding root activity. A greenhouse study involving soil columns (Lakeland sand, bulk density 1.4 Mg/m{sup 3}) planted to soybean, Bahiagras, and control (no vegetation) was conducted in 1989. A treflan based …
