Vibrational Spectra and Potential Function of Tetrachlorocyclopropene

The laser Raman spectra of tetrachlorocyclopropene in the liquid and solid phases have been recorded and vibrational assignments are presented. These results along with root mean squared vibrational amplitudes from electron diffraction data have been employed in a normal coordinate analysis in which a 19 parameter potential function is refined. This potential function, originally expressed in terms of compliance constants, is then used to derive the corresponding conventional and relaxed force constants.

(4+2)-Cycloaddition Reactions of Ketenes; Pyranones

This study deals with the (4+2)-cycloaddition reactions of 4-π electron compounds with ketenes. Chloroketenes were generated in situ from the corresponding chlorinated acid chlorides in the presence of the ketenophiles. Chloro-, dichloro- and diphenylketenes reacted with 1-methoxy-3-trimethylsiloxy-l,3-butadiene, and 2,4-bis(trimethylsiloxy)-1,3-pentadiene to yield the corresponding dihydropyrans. The dihydropyrans yielded substituted 4-pyranones on hydrolysis.

The Synthesis and Reactivity of Bis(silyl)acetylenes

Six bis(silyl)acetylenes with the following varied silicon substituents were prepared: I (Me, Me); II (H, H); III (Cl, H); IV (Cl, Cl); V (OMe, H); VI (OMe, OMe). While I and II may be prepared by the reaction of dilithio- or bis(bromomagnesium)-acetylide with appropriate chlorosilane, similar reactions designed to give III - VI give oligomers, YMe_2Si(C≡C-SiMe_2)_nY, VII, Y = Cl, OMe, as the major products indicating that the acetylenic functionality on silicon activates the chlorosilane toward nucleophilic substitution. Compounds III and IV were prepared by free radical chlorination of II. Methanolysis of III and IV gave quantitative yields of V and VI, respectively. In the presence of mineral acid, VI readily cyclized to give high yields of the cyclic siloxane octamethyl-4,9-dioxa-3,5,8,10-tetrasila-cyclodeca-1,6-diyne, VIII, and the analogous triyne, IX. It was determined that V and VI could be prepared directly from II in high yield by methanolysis with palladium catalyst. Vaska's complex also accomplished the conversion. I attempted to prepare bis(ethoxydimethylsilyl)acetylene by using of Wilkinson 's catalyst for hydrosilylation with acetaldehyde. The principal product of this reaction was 1-(dimethylsilyl)-3,5,5-trimethyl-4-oxa-3-silacyclopent-1-ene, XI.

Pressure Effects on Electric Field Spectra of Molecular Rydberg States

Electric field studies, electrochromism, were used to obtain excited-state data for analogous divalent sulfur compounds. The sulfides investigated were dimethyl sulfide and small cyclic sulfides including the three to six member ring compounds. The excited-state dipole moments and polarizabilities are reported for the first s, p, and d Rydberg absorption bands which occur in the near vacuum ultraviolet region from 230 to 170 nm. The excited-state data are interpreted in terms of the particular excited-state (s, p, or d) for the molecules and the bending differences due to the presence of the ring and the number of atoms in the ring. The next section describes the use of electrochromism to investigate the pressure effect of argon, carbon tetrafluoride and sulfur hexafluoride on the spectra for molecular Rydberg states.

Synthesis and Characterization of Copper(II) Complexes

A series of dihydroxy bridged copper(II) complexes of the type [(L)Cu(OH)₂Cu(L)]x₂ * nH₂0, where L is 2,2'-bipyridine, 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline, x is a counter ion, and n is the number of water molecules, was synthesized. In the case of monohydroxy bridged copper(II) complexes, we have found a new method of synthesis for [ (L)₂Cu(OH)Cu(L)₂ ] (ClO₄)₃, where L is 2,2'-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline. We have synthesized five new monohydroxy bridged copper(II) complexes, thus increasing the number of monohydroxy bridged copper(II) complexes to nine. All complexes have been characterized by infrared spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, magnetic moments, and elemental analysis. The electron spin resonance results establish that the fulvic acids contain organic free radicals as an internal part of their molecular structure. The concentration of unpaired electrons will increase by increasing the pH. The unpaired electron in fulvic acid interacts with the unpaired electron on copper(II) through the Π system, and this will decrease the spin concentration of fulvic acid complexed with copper(II). The displacement of titration curve from a free ligand (fructose-1,6-diphosphate, ribulose-1,5-diphosphate, phospherine, phosphothreonine, and 3-phosphoglyceric acid, to a ligand plus copper(II) (1:1 ratio) shows there is a strong interaction between copper(II) and the corresponding ligand. Manufacturer [Sic] of Densified-Refuse Derived Fuel (d-RDF) Pellets and Methods for the Determination of d-RDF Pellet Densities

There are 150 million tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) annually produced in the United States, which is approximately equivalent to 150 million barrels of oil. MSW production is inexhaustible, and is increasing on an annual per capita basis of approximately three per cent. After controlling the moisture and adding a binder, the combustible portion of MSW was converted to pellets. The objects of this project were to 1) evaluate the binder, 2) prepare the pellets, and 3) evaluate the pellets with regard to density. The manufacture of pellets was conducted at the Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida. The evaluation of the binders and the pellets was done at North Texas State University (NTSU). There were three procedures for measuring the density. The first, using water displacement, was from the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM). The second, using wax coating, was also from ASTM. The third, using sharply-cut cylindrical pellets, was developed at NTSU.

Thermal and Flash Photolysis Studies of Ligand-Exchange Reactions of Substituted Metal Carbonyl Complexes of Cr and Mo

Thermal and flash photolysis studies of ligand-substitution reactions of cis-(pip)(L)M(CO)_4 by L' (pip = piperidine; L, L' = CO, phosphines, phosphites; M = Cr, Mo) implicate square-pyramidal [(L)M(CO)_4], in which L occupies a coordination site in the equatorial plane, as the reactive species. In chlorobenzene (= CB) solvent, the predominant species formed after flash photolysis and a steady-state intermediate for the thermal reaction is cis—[(CB)(L)M(CO)_4], for which rates of CB-dissociation increase with increasing steric demands of coordinated L. Rates of CB-dissociation from trans-[(CB)(L)M(CO)_4] intermediates, formed after photolysis but not thermally, exhibit no observable dependence on the steric properties of the coordinated L.

The Stereochemistry of Silenes and Alpha-Lithio Silanes

When E- or Z-l-methyl-l-phenyl-2-neopentylsilene was generated by the retro-Diels-Alder vacuum-sealed tube thermolysis of its corresponding anthracene adduct, in the presence of various alkoxysilanes, only one diastereomeric adduct was formed in each case, showing that the reactions are stereospecific. An x-ray crystal structure of the methoxytriphenylsilane adduct of the E-silene confirmed its relative configuration as (R,S) or (S,R). This demonstrated that the addition of alkoxysilanes to silenes is stereospecific and syn. The relative configurations of similar alkoxysilane and alkoxystannane adducts to E- and Z-l-methyl-l-phenyl-2-neopentylsilene were assigned based on a combination of xray structures and *3C NMR data. A strong, nonbonded oxygen-metal interaction is apparent in all of those compounds studied. Treatment of the alkoxystannane adducts with alkyl lithium reagents results in tin-lithium exchange in some cases. The results indicate that the resulting <x-lithio alkoxysilanes are not configurationally stable in either THF or hydrocarbon solvents. The reaction of tert butyl lithium with a-trimethylsilylvinylmethylphenylchlorosilane in hydrocarbon solvents yields E- and Z-l-methyl-l-phenyl-2-neopentyl-2-trimethylsilylsilene. In the absence of any traps these silenes undergo a novel tert butyl lithium catalyzed rearrangement to 2-phenyl-3-trimethylsilyl-5,5-dimethyl-2-silahex-3-ene. Photochemical Silene Syntheses

We report the attempted syntheses of two photochemical dimethylsilene precursors, both of which are derived from polyphenyl silanorbornadiene skeletons. Possible synthetic schemes and our results are reported herein. Photolysis of 1,2-divinyl-1,1,2,2-tetramethyl-1,2-disilane at room temperature in a cyclohexane solution of 1,3-butadiene produces 1,1-dimethyl-2-(vinyldimethylsilylmethyl) silene which is trapped in high yields to afford the E- and Z-1,1-dimethyl-2-(vinyldimethylsilylmethyl)-3-vinyl-1-silacyclobutanes in 42 and 29% yields, respectively, along with minor amounts of 1,1-dimethyl-2-(vinyldimethylsilylmethyl)-1-silacyclohex-3-ene, 9%. Low Pressure Flow Pyrolysis at 450º C of either the E- or Z-isomer provides a relatively mild thermal source of the silene in the gas phase. Two products, 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisilacyclohex-3-ene and 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-2,5-disilabicyclo[2.2.1]hexane, are formed from an intramolecular rearrangement of the silene. Other reactions of the 3-vinylsilacyclobutanes include geometric isomerization, ring expansion to the silacyclohex-3-ene, and a homodienyl-1,5-hydrogen shift to 3,3,6,6-tetramethyl-3,6-disiladeca-1,4,8-triene. Synthetic schemes, successful and unsuccessful, for hydrido silene, acylpolysilene, and fluorine substituted silene precursors are discussed in the final chapter.

The Analysis of Fire Debris Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

This paper describes a new technique for analyzing fire debris using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Petroleum distillates, which are commonly used accelerants, were weathered, burned, and steamdistilled. These, as well as virgin samples of the accelerants, were analyzed by gas chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In addition, solvent studies and detectibility limit studies were conducted. The use of NMR is described as a valuable adjunct to the existing methods of analysis.

The body of information concerning carbon-carbon spin-spin coupling constants now includes a large number of coupling constants, the establishment of a dihedral angular dependence on 3JCC, and the application of 3JCC to conformational analysis. This study adds another dimension to the growing wealth of information associated with 13 C-NMR: the influence of some non-bonded interactions on 3JCC Four types of non-bonded interactions that could influence vicinal carbon-carbon NMR coupling constants were investigated. To facilitate the NMR studies, a variety of 13C-labeled compounds were synthesized.

Chromatographic and Spectroscopic Studies on Aquatic Fulvic Acid

High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was used to investigate the utility of this technique for the analytical and preparative separation of components of aquatic fulvic acids (FA). Three modes of HPLC namely adsorption, anion exchange and reversed phase were evaluated. Aquatic fulvic acids were either extracted from surface water and sediment samples collected from the Southwest of the U.S., or were provided in a high purity form from the USGS. On the adsorption mode, a major fraction of aquatic fulvic acid was isolated on a semipreparative scale and subjected to Carbon-13 NMR and FAB Mass Spectroscopy. Results indicated that (1) The analyzed fraction of fulvic acid contains more aliphatic than aromatic moieties; (2) Methoxy, carboxylic acids, and esters are well-defined moieties of the macromolecule; (3) Phenolic components of the macromolecules were not detected in the Carbon-13 NMR spectrum possibly because of the presence of stable free radicals. Results of the anion exchange mode have shown that at least three types of acidic functionalities in aquatic fulvic acid can be separated. Molecular Dynamics in the Liquid Phase by FT-NMR, FT-IR and Laser Raman Lineshape Analysis

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) provides a convenient probe for the study of molecular reorientation in liquids because nuclear spin-lattice relaxation times are dependent upon the details of molecular motion. The combined application of Raman and Infrared (IR) lineshape analysis can furnish more complete information to characterize the anisotropic rotation of molecules. Presented here are the studies of NMR relaxation times, together with Raman/IR Mneshape analysis of the solvent and temperature dependence of rotational diffusion in 1,3,5-tribromobenzene and 1,3,5-trifluorobenzene. In these experiments, it was found that the rotational diffusion constants calculated from Perrin's stick model were two to three times smaller than the measured values of D, and D,,. Similarly, rotational diffusion constants predicted by the Hu-Zwanzig slip model were too large by a factor of 2. Application of the newer Hynes-Kapral-Weinberg model furnished rotational diffusion constants that were in reasonable agreement with the experimental results. The vibrational peak frequencies and relaxation times of the isotropic Raman spectra of the υ1 modes of CD2Br2 and CHBr3 were studied in solution. The frequency shifts in non-interactive solvents were explained well on the basis of solution variations in the dispersion energy. In Lewis bases, the displacements were in some, but not all, cases …

Molecular Dynamics and Interactions in Liquids

Various modern spectroscopies have been utilized with considerable success in recent years to probe the dynamics of vibrational and reorientational relaxation of molecules in condensed phases. We have studied the temperature dependence of the polarized and depolarized Raman spectra of various modes in the following dihalomethanes: dibromomethane, dichloromethane, dichloromethane-d2, and bromochloromethane. Among other observed trends, we have found the following: Vibrational dephasing times calculated from the bend) and (C-Br stretch) lineshapes are of the same magnitude in CI^B^. The vibrational dephasing time of [C-D(H) stretch] is twice as long in CD2Cl2 as in CH-^C^, and the relaxation time of (C-Cl stretch) is greater in CI^C^ than in CD2CI2. Isotropic relaxation times for all three stretching vibrations are significantly shorter in C^BrCl than in CI^C^ or CI^B^. Application of the Kubo model revealed that derived modulation times are close to equal for equivalent vibrations in the various dihalomethanes. Thus, the more efficient relaxation of the A^ modes in CE^BrCl can be attributed almost entirely to the broader mean squared frequency perturbation of the vibrations in this molecule.

The Study of Low Temperature Silene Generation

The reactions of tert-butyl-, sec-butyl-, and n-butyllithium with dimethylfluorovinylsilane include addition to the double bond to give both silene and silenoid intermediates, fluorine substitution, and a novel vinyl substitution. For the tert-butyllithium reaction, product stereochemistry and trapping experiments using both cyclopentadiene and methoxytrimethylsilane show that silenes are not formed in THF. In hexane about 67% of the 1,3-disilacyclobutanes obtained arise from silene dimerization while 33% are formed by silenoid coupling. In hexane the order of reactivity for addition, t-Bu > sec-Bu > n-Bu, is opposite that for fluorine substitution. The vinyl substitution is most significant with secondary alkyllithium reagents including the tert-butyllithium adduct to dimethylfluorovinylsilane and with sec-butyllithium itself. Evidence for the formation of vinyllithium or ethylene in the process could not be obtained.

A Sythetic Study of a Cyclic Siloxydiyne and its Iron Carbonyl Complex

The synthetic studies include the synthesis of the cyclic siloxydiyne, 3,3,5,5,8,8,10,10-octamethyl-4,9-dioxa-3,5,8,10-tetrasilacyclodeca-1,6- diyne [VI] and its novel iron carbonyl complex. In the preparation of [VI] by HBr promoted condensation of bis (methoxydimethylsilyl) acetylene, a minor product, a cyclic trimer was always formed along with the major product [VI]. No evidence of an equilibrium between the trimerization product and the dimerization product was found. Compound [VI] can react with iron carbonyl reagents to produce a novel binuclear iron complex of trimethylenemethane [VII] in very low yield either in a thermal or photo-reaction. The key step proposed by us in the formation of [VII] is a I,2-silyl shift in a complexed bis (silyl) acetylene to form a vinylidene intermediate. Experiments aimed at isolating this intermediate were not successful.

The physiological role of LCAT has been the subject of a number of recent articles (Glomset, 1979; Nilsson-Ehle et al., 1980). According to most current theories, the enzyme functions in combination with high-density lipoproteins in the reverse cholesterol transport pathway which presumably returns peripheral cholesterol to the liver where cholesterol catabolism takes place. Despite the exciting potential for studies on the catalytic function and the nature of the enzyme-substrate complex, the mechanism of action of LCAT remains largely unexplored. The relatively slow progress in the elucidation of the LCAT reaction mechanism is likely to be due to the difficulties in the isolation of the enzyme in sufficient quantities. Consequently, considerably less is known about the physical and chemical properties of the enzyme. Therefore, the first objective of this investigation was to isolate and purify sufficient amount of enzyme for subsequent characterization studies. The second objective of this investigation was to characterize the physical properties of the enzyme by techniques including analytical ultracentrifugation, ultraviolet spectroscopy, and circular dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopy. Picosecond Spectroscopy of Rhodamine B

A series of picosecond excite-probe experiments was performed on various concentrations of aqueous and ethanolic solutions of rhodamine B in order to determine the existence of dimerization in those solutions. The goals of the research presented in this dissertation were twofold. Initially, various techniques of time-resolved spectroscopy were to be employed to further characterize the ground and excited-state molecular properties of the aqueous RB dimer. The information obtained, and the techniques developed in that study would then be utilized in an effort to secure evidence which would support or refute the claims of rhodamine B dimerization in an ethanolic solution.

Stereochemical Studies of Nitrosamines: The Induced Circular Dichroism of Achiral Nitrosasmines

The induced circular dichroism (ICD) of several chiral nitrosamines and various chiral reagents has been investigated. The interaction is attributed to a 1:1 hydrogen bonded complex between the NO group of the nitrosamine and the hydroxyl groups of alcohols and polyols, or the amino group of amines. Only those chiral reagents possessing large differences in size of the groups about the hydrogen bonding site contributed to CD anomalies. The acyclic 2-octanols did not give observable Cotton effects, presumably due to the similarity in size of the methyl and methylene groups and rotational freedom of the acyclic system. The signs of the Cotton effects could be correlated with the absolute configuration of the sterically hindered alcohols and amines. Only the alpha, axial hydrogens of conformationally biased, heterocyclic nitrosamines were found to undergo selective hydrogen-deuterium exchange, suggesting that this feature is critical for nitrosamine carcinogenicity.

Raman Studies of Molecular Dynamics and Interactions in Liquids

In order to explore the N-H stretching region of aliphatic amines, we performed a study of the Raman spectrum of n-propylamine at various concentrations in cyclohexane. Statistical analysis provided evidence of a second symmetric stretching vibration, which we were able to assign to nonhydrogen bonded NH2 groups. To obtain additional evidence on the existence of monomers in n-propylamine and to further study hydrogen bonding and Fermi resonance in aliphatic amines, we extended the investigation to the analysis of the Raman spectrum of this compound over an extended range of temperature in the neat liquid phase. This study corroborated our finding that the peak previously assigned to the symmetric stretching mode of hydrogen bonded amines is actually composed of two bands. Furthermore, trends in both the resolved band parameters and the Fermi resonance analysis were tabulated, allowing one to monitor the change in the N-H valence region with concentration and temperature.

Investigation Into the Causes for the Loss of Resolution in an Ion Chromatograpy Resin

Four mechanisms were considered as possible causes of the loss in resolution for a Dionex CG2 ion chromatography resin: 1) presence of inorganic ions strongly bound to the active sites; 2) adsorption of organic species; 3) physical alterations; and 4) chemical alterations. The instrumental analyses used to gather data were ICP, FT-IR, SEM, solid C-13 NMR and IC. Based on the results, no metal ions are bound to the resin, no organic species are held onto the resin, and no physical change was observable. The cause for the loss of resolution is a strong reduction in the number of active sites in the resin as confirmed by elemental analysis for the sulfur in the sulfonic acid present in the active sites.

Simultaneous Part-Per-Billion Determination of Sodium and Chloride Ions

The method utilizes both cation and anion concentrator columns in parallel as a preconcentration system. The preconcentrator system is loaded using a reagent delivery module operated for a specific time at a preset flow rate. Total injection volumes of 2-5 ml are routinely used. Various chromatograms are discussed along with detailed information concerning detection limits for sodium and chloride, the system operating conditions, and the solutions to other pitfalls which have arisen during the course of this work.

Intramolecular 2+2 Cycloadditions of Ketenes

The objective of this study was to explore intramolecular ketene cycloadditions with the anticipated results of developing new synthetic methodology for the synthesis of polycyclic compounds difficult to obtain by other procedures. (o-Alkenylphenoxy)ketenes were initially selected for this study because these ketenes provided a favorable proximity for the intramolecular [2+2] cycloaddition reactions. The difunctional precursors, (o-alkenylphenoxy)- acetic acids, were readily prepared from o-alkenylphenols and ∝-halocarboxylic acids and were converted to the corresponding acid chlorides by reaction with oxalyl chloride. The acid chlorides were dehydrochlorinated to the corresponding (o-alkenylphenoxy)ketenes by treatment with triethylamine. The ketenes undergo a facile intramolecular [2+2] cycloaddition to give polycyclic eye 1obutanones. The (o-vinylphenoxy)ketenes are clearly more reactive than the (o-allylphenoxy)ketenes and provide much better yields of the cycloaddition products because of electronic effects in the transition state in the cycloaddition process. The intramolecular [2+2] cycloadditions of keteniminium salts were included in this study as a more electrophilic alternative to ketenes that will react with less nucleophilic carbon-carbon double bonds. However, the use of keteniminium salts instead of ketenes in Intramolecular cycloadditions does have some limitations. Calcium Aluminates Synthesis, Characterization, and Hydration Behavior

The hydration behavior of the calcium aluminates as a function of the glass content, the curing temperature, and the water-solid ratio was investigated. In order to keep them from influencing the results, the free-lime content and the surface area of all samples were kept constant, whenever possible. Samples were hydrated with a water-solid ratio of 10/1 for periods of 1 to 90 days. Three curing temperatures were studied; 2°C, 25°C, and 50°C. Samples were hydrated in tightly sealed polyethylene containers to prevent reactions with atmospheric carbon dioxide. The hydration was followed by X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis. Only two samples, Hexacalcium Tetra-alumino Magnesium Silicate and Tricalcium Magnesium Dialuminate, were successfully prepared in an amorphous form. These compounds were used to investigate the effect of glass content on the hydration behavior. Results indicate that when the glass content is increased a corresponding increase is found in the percent combined water. Samples hydrated at 25°C were influenced by changes in the glass content to a greater degree than were those hydrated at either 2°C or 50°C.
