What's Available in the Atomic Energy Literature

Foreword: This booklet is one example of he guideposts that will help the user to locate nuclear science and technology literature. The first section describes the basic types of information materials and indicates the sources from which each type may be obtained. The second section describes bibliographic materials that identify literature published on a given subject.

Wire Chamber -- Computer System (open access)

Wire Chamber -- Computer System

First paragraph of report: M. Neumann and H. Sherrard reported the development of a wire spark chamber experiment toward receiving digitized spark information. Since late 1962 our effort has been directed toward a wire-chamber with a core memory, using standard ferrite cores, and toward an on-line operation between spark chamber and computer.

A Wrist Badge Film Dosimeter for Hand Dose Measurement (open access)

A Wrist Badge Film Dosimeter for Hand Dose Measurement

The wrist badge provides a dosimeter that is useful in estimating the radiation dose to the hands and forearms. Its new shield system gives good gamma and slow neutron dose discrimination with duPont 552 film packets. The film can be evaluated using the present technique and equipment. Several attempts to develop hand dosimeters have been made. Finger rings using film have been used routinely but have not been entirely satisfactory for all situations. The wrist badge was developed to provide improved gamma and slow neutron dose measurement of the upper extremities under certain appropriate conditions. The wrist badge dosimeter is not a substitute or alternate for finger ring dosimeters but is a necessary dosimeter for some extremity exposure situations.

X-Ray Analytical Spectroscopy of the Rare Earths (open access)

X-Ray Analytical Spectroscopy of the Rare Earths

Technical report. From Abstract : "The term 'rare earths' is the classic name given to the group of elements with atomic numbers 57 to 71. The element yttrium is usually included in this group. The chemical properties of these elements are so strikingly similar that they always occur together in nature and their separation from each other is a singularly difficult task. With but few exceptions, mixtures of these elements have also defied analysis by classical methods of analytical chemistry. Consequently for the analysis of ores, minerals, and mixtures obtained from fractionation processes, and for the assessment of the purity of isolated elements, it has been necessary to resort to measurements on physical properties. Of these properties, emission and absorption spectra of these elements have found the widest application."

X-Ray Diffraction Data for Aromatic, Hydroaromatic, and Tetrahedral Structures of Carbon

From Abstract: "A brief theoretical introduction of the Debye interference function is given, and an outline is made of the treatment of experimental data so that the experimental interference function can be obtained. This study is part of the investigations of the fundamental structure of coals and cokes by the Federal Bureau of Mines. X-ray diffraction is a very powerful tool in studying structure."

XLIBIT: ANL Cross-section Library Code (open access)

XLIBIT: ANL Cross-section Library Code

From Introduction: "With the acquisition by the Laboratory of a Control Data 3600 computer in the fall of 1963, a joint reprogramming project was undertaken by the Laboratory's Applied Mathematics Division and the Control Data Corporation to develop one - and two-dimensional diffusion-theory and Sn transport-theory programs for the CDC-3600. The XLIBIT code described in this report was developed as a part of this project. XLIBIT is a CDC-3600 program designed to: 1) Prepare a cross-section library tape. 2) Modify an existing cross-section library tape. 3) Duplicate an existing cross-section library tape. 4) Print all or a portion of the cross-section data on the library tape. Punch cross-section decks for all or a portion of the data on the library tape. The decks produced are identical to those used in pertaining the tape."

The Y-Nd and Sc-Nd Phase Systems (open access)

The Y-Nd and Sc-Nd Phase Systems

Technical report. From Introduction : "In a recent study by Spedding, et al. on some rare earth alloy systems, an intermediate phase was found to form when a light rare earth (ABAC stacking) was alloyed with a heavy rare earth (ABAC stacking). This intermediate phase was found to have the structure of samarium metal with the stacking ABABCBCAC and was designated "delta". Since the cause of this rather unusual structure occurring in either samarium metal or these alloys is not known the study of these phases as some of their properties is continuing in the Ames Laboratory. It was the purpose of the present study to extend our knowledge of the composition and more of formation of these phases."
