Cold-Mold Arc Melting and Casting (open access)

Cold-Mold Arc Melting and Casting

Report issued by the U.S. Bureau of Mines providing updates and additional information related to cold-mold arc melting and casting. Abstract: "This bulletin reviews the historical background of the cold-mold arc-melting technology, with specific references to the development that led to homogeneous zirconium ingots. Descriptions are given of modern production arc-furnaces for vacuum melting of both exotic and conventional metals. Besides zirconium, specific data are given for production of chromium, thorium, and copper. The development of the skull-casting technique for titanium is detailed, and the application of the technique to such refractory metals as molybdenum and tungsten is described. Factors of operation of the apparatus and furnace design are considered" (p. 1).

Vacuum-Freezing Vapor-Compression Desalting Process

From Abstract: "The Vacuum-Freezing Vapor-Compression Process (VFVC) was evaluated during the period from February, 1965, through March, 1967, by Colt Industries Inc. under O.S.W. Contract No. 14-01-0001-532." From Process Description: "The primary principles involved for converting of sea and brackish water to fresh water in the VFVC Process are rather well known in physical chemistry and are summarized below. The principles discussed above, applied to a practical VFVC desalting system, are illustrated in the schematic flow diagram, Figure 3. This simplified diagram shows both the essential components of the process and the flow paths of the various fluids in the system. A typical mass and heat balance is shown in Figure 4."

Oscillator Strengths and Transition Probabilities fro 3288 Lines of Fe I (open access)

Oscillator Strengths and Transition Probabilities fro 3288 Lines of Fe I

Report of a homogeneous set of intensity-related data calculated for 3288 spectral lines of Fe I in the region from 2100 to 9900 angstroms. The quantities tabulated in the present monograph include log (g__), log (gf), gf,f,gA, and A. Since recent investigations do not support excitations corrections in the case of Fe I and certain other spectra, the present tabulation incorporates a removal of that normalization function. This recalculation affects the values for all lines whose upper energy levels lie above 46000 cm -1 and should significantly improve the internal consistency of the present data.

Geodimeter Measurement of Earth Strains on Rainier Mesa, Nevada Test Site (open access)

Geodimeter Measurement of Earth Strains on Rainier Mesa, Nevada Test Site

Abstract: "Geodimeter surveys were made on four traverses near the east scarp of Rainier Mesa between October 27, 1967 and April 26, 1968. These measurements were made in order to determine if an changes in distance between survey stations had resulted from downslope creep of the rocks behind the scarp, or if any displacements had resulted from nuclear explosions beneath the mesa and in adjacent areas. A persistent small but possibly significant, slopeward displacement was measured along one traverse and may represent detachment of a large block; monitoring for an additional period of time is recommended."

Cosmic Ray Produced Ar37 and Ar39 Activities in Recently Fallen Meteorites (open access)

Cosmic Ray Produced Ar37 and Ar39 Activities in Recently Fallen Meteorites

Several methods of determining meteorite ages depend ages upon nuclides formed by cosmic ray interactions. The tactic assumption is always made that the intensity of cosmic radiation does not vary in time or space. However it is known that the intensity of cosmic radiation at the earth varies with the solar activity. The spectrum of cosmic ray protons and alpha particles exhibit a marked drop at the low energy end (<1.5 GeV) and the intensity in the region appears to follow the 11 year cycle of solar activity. The low energy cosmic rays increase in intensity with a decrease in solar activity. These changes in cosmic ray intensities are generally attributed to a modulation of the galactic cosmic radiation by the magnetic fields associated with the outward streaming solar material, the solar wind. One would therefore expect that the cosmic ray intensity several astronomical units from the sun is greater than the intensity at the earth's orbit, particularly at the low energy end of the spectrums.

An Ultrasonic System for Testing Isotope Heat Capsules (open access)

An Ultrasonic System for Testing Isotope Heat Capsules

Introduction: This report describes a program to develop a nondestructive (ultrasonic) tester and testing procedure to perform integrity tests on isotope heat source containers. The increased application of isotope heat sources has brought more attention to the engineering problems encountered during fabrication. One of the most important of these problems is insuring the isotope containment during the long unattended periods of use. To determine the integrity of the heat source container, a nondestructive testing procedure must be adopted to test each heat source after fabrication.
