The Mg-MgCl2 System — A Chronopotentiometric Study

The mode of dissolution of magnesium in molten magnesium chloride contacted with Mg-Pb alloys was studied at 750°C using anodic chronopotentiometry. An inert tantalum anode was used to determine relative amounts of magnesium dissolved in its chloride as a function of magnesium activity in the alloy. According to the law of mass action a linear dependence of magnesium solubility on a Mg indicates Mg2Cl2 as the reaction product and a parabolic dependence indicates MgCl. It was found that the amount of magnesium dissolved in its chloride was directly proportional to the magnesium activity in the metal phase, i.e., a linear dependence, indicating Mg2Cl2 as the subhalide species. Due to the corrosive nature of the Mg-MgCl2 system a special apparatus was used so that only the inert metals tantalum and molybdenum came in contact with the melt. Purification procedures and conditions for proper equilibration and measurement were established and are reported. The basic equation of chronopotentiometry, [equation not transcribed], was found to hold and at given magnesium activities the product [unintelligible] did not vary with the current, indicating the validity of the analytical technique.

Cosmic Ray Produced Ar37 and Ar39 Activities in Recently Fallen Meteorites

Several methods of determining meteorite ages depend ages upon nuclides formed by cosmic ray interactions. The tactic assumption is always made that the intensity of cosmic radiation does not vary in time or space. However it is known that the intensity of cosmic radiation at the earth varies with the solar activity. The spectrum of cosmic ray protons and alpha particles exhibit a marked drop at the low energy end (<1.5 GeV) and the intensity in the region appears to follow the 11 year cycle of solar activity. The low energy cosmic rays increase in intensity with a decrease in solar activity. These changes in cosmic ray intensities are generally attributed to a modulation of the galactic cosmic radiation by the magnetic fields associated with the outward streaming solar material, the solar wind. One would therefore expect that the cosmic ray intensity several astronomical units from the sun is greater than the intensity at the earth's orbit, particularly at the low energy end of the spectrums.

The Status of Meteorological Knowledge as a Factor in Air Pollution Control

The first national Technical Conference on Air Pollution (1) held in this city in 1950 included eight papers on meteorology; the present session contains one. On this basis, one night conclude that recent progress in meteorology has been virtually nonexistent or that the importance of meteorological factors has been diminishing, Neither could be further from the truth, as the number and quality of papers relating to air pollution meteorology in recent scientific and technical sessions will attest. It is particularly appropriate to review the status of meteorological "know-how" at this time, because of the many situations in which the ultimate capability of the atmosphere to absorb pollution is in question. Both in connection with highly toxic materials on the one hand and the "megalopolis" on the other, estimates of the "atmospheric sewer capacity" are becoming increasingly necessary to industrial and municipal planning.

Abstract: "A continuous countercurrent solvent extraction process utilizing dibutyl carbitol as the extractant has been developed for separating 210Po from large amounts of associated bismuth. Both laboratory and pilot plant data demonstrate the process is a suitable headend step in recovery of kilogram quantities of 210Po. Typically, the extraction process recovers over 98% of the 210Po, essentially free from bismuth (Bi DF>1500), in a dilute HNO3 solution suitable as a starting material for final concentration and purification steps."

Playa Surface Morphology: Miscellaneous Investigations

Abstract: Numerous environmental processes affect the development and stability of playa (lakebed) surfaces. Of special significance are hydrologic processes that control the amount and flow of both surface and ground water, and climatic variations which in turn influence the hydrology. This report, in six parts, examines some aspects of the playa surface environment. Chapter 1 is an introduction. Chapter 2 describes microrelief changes that developed at Harper Playa, California, following flooding of the playa in 1965-66. Chapter 3 documents a subsurface hydrologic investigation at Rogers Playa, California. The investigation revealed that the piezometric surface has lowered into sand layers beneath the surface, and it may explain why giant desiccation fissures have formed in the surface clays. Chapter 4 describes an investigation of seven Australian playas and suggests that Australia did not undergo a pluvial period like that of the western United States. Chapter 5 describes three kavirs (playas) in northern Iran and indicates that former lakes did exist there, but not to the same extent as in the western United States. Chapter 6 examines the possibilities of observing playa surface changes from satellites, using the present remote sensor technology. Abstract: "Geodimeter surveys were made on four traverses near the east scarp of Rainier Mesa between October 27, 1967 and April 26, 1968. These measurements were made in order to determine if an changes in distance between survey stations had resulted from downslope creep of the rocks behind the scarp, or if any displacements had resulted from nuclear explosions beneath the mesa and in adjacent areas. A persistent small but possibly significant, slopeward displacement was measured along one traverse and may represent detachment of a large block; monitoring for an additional period of time is recommended."

Introduction: This report describes a program to develop a nondestructive (ultrasonic) tester and testing procedure to perform integrity tests on isotope heat source containers. The increased application of isotope heat sources has brought more attention to the engineering problems encountered during fabrication. One of the most important of these problems is insuring the isotope containment during the long unattended periods of use. To determine the integrity of the heat source container, a nondestructive testing procedure must be adopted to test each heat source after fabrication.

Scope and Purpose of Work: The quadrangle was mapped as part of the U.S. Geological Survey program of classifying and evaluating lands in the Public Domain. Mineral rights for coal had been retained in parts or all of Tps. 2 and 3 N., Rs. 77, 78, and 79 W. These areas are in part underlain by sedimentary rocks of Late Cretaceous(?) and early Tertiary age (Middle Park Formation), and in North Park these rocks are called the Coalmont Formation and contain coal. The chief purpose of the work was to map and study any coal beds found and to make a detailed geologic map that can be used as part of a geological atlas of the United States.
