Caption: "Death took a freakish holiday early Friday and a widow and her small dog emerged unhurt from an explosion that shattered her northeast Oklahoma City home. Mrs. Frances Wood, 63, of 1500 NE 69, had just awakened and was sitting in bed listening to the radio when the blast occured. Her toy Manchester Cricket, was with her at the east side of the single story brick home. Steam Blamed The explosion originated in the west end and was attributed to a buildup of steam in a water heater. "I was frightened," Mrs. Wood said. "My mouth was so dry, I couldn't scream. "I went outside and put some snow in my mouth. I had tried to scream, but nothing came out." (photo tag: Debris of shattered home is examined by neighbor.)"

Photograph used for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "The murder of Martin Luther King does not mean that as a nation, we have somehow lost our way," the wife of the vice presidentof the United States said in Oklahoma City Friday night. Although Mrs. Hubert H. Himphrey carefully read comments prepared by her husband, her own sadness at "the loss of a friend" was evident to about 350 women gathered at the Seraton Oklahoma Hotel. "What will Martin Luther King's death mean for the American people?" she said at a dinner of the state convention of the Oklahoma Federation of Democratic Women's Club. If it becomes a signal for black Americans to strike out in rage and retaliation, then we will have made a mockery of all for which he lived and died," she said. "If it leads white Americans, in a spirit of weariness and futility, to turn from the tortuous road which leads to progress and equality, then we will have strengthened that very doctrine which he defied - the sense that the world has gone mad and mortal man cannot set it right," she added. Mrs. Humprhey opened her 11-minute address by noting, "Tonight …

Photograph used for a story in the Oklahoma City Times newspaper. Caption: "The Only Things that were high-talled about Tuesday's opening night of the annual Oklahoma City Charity Horse Show were the animal entrants. They were very high-tailed. Other than the horses, the show was a simple demonstration of some very good reasons why man might try getting a horse. Never having seen a horse show, we doubted the pleasure of watching the event. We even looked it up in Webster to be sure about what to expect. ("Horse Show - A competitive exhibition of horses and vehicles, especially as an annual fashionable event.") In This sense the Oklahoma City Charity Horse Shoe is no disappointment. The horses were on their best behavior and rider were bright and elegant in traditional habits.
