Photograph used for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "Sea of smoke surrounds firemen Tuesday afternoon as they battle a grass fire a half mile west of May near NW 108. It took the firefighters from one engine and two pumper trucks nearly 2 1/2 hours to completely extinguish the fire which swept over some 30 acres. Luckily, Oklahoma's usually gusty winds were not a factor. Capt. Leroy Shannon said. Had the wind been from the south, the fire might have jumped across NW 108 and threatened homes in Quail Creek, he said. The firemen interview several persons who live in the area, Shannon said, but unable to determine what started the grass fire."

Photograph used for a story in the Oklahoma City Times newspaper. Caption: "Day campers at the Girl Scouts' Cookieland Camp try a game called walking or riding the cans. In contrast to the racial strife characteristic of the headlines of the 1960's, some Oklahomans are quietly erasing demarcation lines seperating black and white. For a full week this summer 36 adults and 69 cadettes and senior Girl Scouts cared - cared for 100 girls from Oklahoma City's Negro-dominated Lincoln School. Their volunteering gave the young girls - many from homes with working mothers - their first camping experience. Tinker Sends Buses Buses furnished by Tinker Air Force Base and the Midwest City Public Schools transported them to Fun 'N' Sunday at Red Lands Council's Cookieland Camp southeast of Oklahoma City on S-3. Volunteers in many ways were average Oklahomans, but they had moved beyond talk to practical experssions of concern. Directing the five-day camp was Mrs. Lester Walton of 10825 N Utica Dr., and experienced day camp director who served previously in the regular day camping program for member scouts."

Photograph used for a story in the Oklahoma City Times newspaper. Caption: "Stephanie McDaniels, Lincoln School student, leads other day campers in a song fest as two Service Susies join in. Because 36 adults and 69 cadette and senior Girl Scouts cared, some Oklahoma City girls who have never attended day camop may get to do so next summer. In a pilot program this summer volunteers cared for 100 girls from Oklahoma City's predominantly Negro Lincoln School, 1138 N Geary, at the Fun 'N' Sunday camp southeast of Oklahoma City on S-3. The success of the week-long experiment prompted Mrs. L. H. Thornberry, district Girl Scout sdviser, to predict the continuation of the program next summer. The Fun 'N' Sunday camp, located at the Red Lands Council's Cookieland Camp, was an outgrowth of an effort begun nine months earlier by the Community Council to determine how existing agencies could extend their services into areas not reached. Praising the volunteers, Mrs. Thornberry noted how valuable it was for the children to "have a person-to-person relationship for five days."
