This study was concerned with the relationship of self-ideal discrepancy scores and defensiveness in a college population. To measure self-ideal discrepancy the Bill's Index of Adjustments and Values was used. Defensiveness was measured by a scale derived from the MMPI.

The problem of this study was the amount of emphasis placed on various supervisory practices in the supervision of English. The first purpose was to compare the emphasis placed on supervisory practices in the supervision of English in selected Texas secondary schools with the emphasis placed on the same supervisory practices in the supervision of English in selected school systems of the nation. The second purpose was to compare the emphasis placed on supervisory practices in the supervision of English in selected Texas secondary schools with the emphasis a group of educational specialists believed should be placed on the supervisory practices. The third purpose was to compare the emphasis placed on supervisory practices in the supervision of English in selected school systems of the nation with the emphasis a group of educational specialists believed should be placed on the supervisory practices.

The Effects of Two Approaches to Reading Instruction upon the Oral Language Development of First Grade Pupils

The problem of this study was to compare the relative gains made in the development of oral language skills in two groups of first grade pupils when two different approaches to beginning reading instruction were used. The two approaches were: (a) the language experience approach, Approach A, and (b) the traditional basal reader approach, Approach B. The six aspects of oral language development considered were: extent of verbalization, spoken vocabulary, expressions of tentativeness, use of structural patterns, colorful and vivid expressions, and use of mazes.

An Evaluation of a Guidance-Structured Summer Session for Entering University Freshmen

The problem of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a guidance-structured summer session for entering university freshmen. The performances of students entering this type of program were compared with those of students entering a traditional type of summer school. Inferences made relating to the contributions of a guidance-structured summer session to entering university freshmen were based on analyses of the following characteristics: (1) performance on standardized tests; (2) certain aspects relating to high school background; (3) academic achievement and retention at Texas A. and M. University; (4) fathers' attendance at Texas A. and M. University; and (5) fathers' occupations.
