Concerto for Piano and Orchestra is a three-movement composition by Dan Beaty.

This quartet is comprised of two wind instruments, flute and clarinet, and two stringed instruments, violin and violoncello. This unusual combination affords a wide variety of colors in both melody and chord-voicing that are impossible with an "unmixed" quartet.

The String Quartet is comprised of three movements: Allegro, Adagio, and Vivace. The Allegro utilizes a monothematic Sonata Allegro form: the Adagio is through-composed, and the Vivace is a Rondo. All three movements feature a lean harmonic texture, much of the harmony resulting from linear movement, i.e. counterpoint.

The purpose of the composition of the "Music for Chamber Band" is the creation of an extended work for an ensemble of solo wind instruments are treated as woodwind and brass quartets, with the percussion section, which requires four players, serving a subordinate function. The "Music for Chamber Band" is in three contrasting but thematically interrelated movements. The first movement, entitled "Lament," is marked "Slowly and simply" and has a mournful character. The second movement is fast and vigorous, frequently utilizing cross accents which give the impression of two or more meters performed simultaneously, and is entitled "Dance". The third movement, "Antiphon," is moderate in tempo and relaxed in nature. The form of the work as a whole can be likened to an arch which contains (or is made up of) three smaller arches.

It is the purpose of this thesis to present a study of music written for the clarinet during the period from 1600 to 1800. The first part is a history of the clarinet showing the stages of development of the instrument from its early predecessors to its present form. Part one also explains the acoustics of the clarinet and its actual invention. The second part deals with composers and their music for the clarinet. No attempt is made to include all music written for the instrument during the prescribed period; rather, the writer's intention is to include chiefly those works by composers whose musics has proven to be outstanding in clarinet literature or interesting historically. The order in which the works themselves are taken up is chronological, by composers, with comment on their styles as to form, harmonic content, melodic content, rhythmic content, problems in phrasing, or any other general technical problem. All of these elements are illustrated with examples taken from the music.

The problem of the study was to investigate the comparative effectiveness of two methods of teaching harmonic dictation to beginning college music students. The methods were (1) the conventional teacher-classroom approach as suggested by Robert Ottman's Elementary Harmony, and (2) a linear programed book to be used in conjunction with a series of tape recordings.

There are seven schools in the United States and Canada that offer a training program for students qualified in art and the biological sciences to meet the visual communication requirements in medical education and research. A survey of each of these schools in relation to the medical illustration curriculum of North Texas State University will give a broader picture of the educational requirements, nature of work, qualifications of the candidate, and the outlines of the curricula in this field. From this survey a guidance program will be determined to prepare toe undergraduate student for admission to medical school. This investigation of each training program will provide a better understanding of the variances of the medical schools which have departments of art as applied to medicine.

The purpose of this study was to determine the trends that are developing in the architecture of the civic, commercial, and religious buildings in Fort Worth, Texas. This will be shown by an analysis of what the author considers to be the best examples of buildings constructed in Fort Worth during the past ten years.

For this study, the forms of the movements of forty-four symphonies of Mozart-those appearing in the Breitkopf and Hartel "complete" edition of his works- were analyzed. For convenience of reference, the symphonies are discussed in this thesis in their conventional numbering-that of the Breitkopf and Hartel edition- except for six symphonies that appeared in a supplementary volume and are inserted in this study into their approximately correct chronological positions.

The purpose of this study is to collect, analyze, and interpret physical and pricing data pertaining to the elemental market structure for grain sorghums in Texas. For comparative purposes, a criterion is established in Chapter IV to evaluate the data obtained. The objective is to deter mine whether the physical and pricing aspects of the Texas grain sorghum market structure conforms to theoretical structural patterns. If there are deviations from the theoretical pattern, explanations will be sought. No attempt will be made in Chapter II, "Physical Structure", and Chapter III, "Pricing Structure", to evaluate the data given, but only to report the functioning characteristics of these aspects.

The purpose of the project described in this paper has been to complete construction and to determine the operating characteristics of a charging system and a corona-type controlled leakage system for the compact Van de Graaf generator now under construction at North Texas State University. Calibration data of the generating voltmeter to be used for determining the potential developed by the generator are also included in the paper.

The significance of the application of valves to brass instruments will be better understood by a brief discussion of conditions immediately preceding this innovation.

Of all the composers of German Lied, Franz Schubert and Hugo Wolf can be considered the true giants of this musical form. Schubert's position is secure as the greatest composer of the Lied. Wolf, though challenging Schubert in this particular idiom only, brought the Lied to its culmination. This study will show, by comparative analysis, the respective treatment by Fr anz Schubert and Hugo Wolf of selected poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Though Schubert composed some seventy songs (not including multiple settings of the same text), and Wolf fifty-one, based on the poetry of Goethe, they shared only thirteen of these poems in common. Four songs by each composer have been selected for detailed analysis.

The harmonic practices of the late romantic period are often discussed in general terms, categorical phrases, and a score of subjectivisms characteristic of the era. It is the purpose of this thesis to clarify certain aspects of the harmonic vocabulary which developed in the late romantic period.

The purpose of this study is to analyze certain major reforms in the Code in an effort to determine whether or not the "status quo" has been change. These reforms are: (1) henceforth all military legal proceedings are to be governed by a single Code equally applicable to all the services; (2) all military judicial proceedings are to be governed as near as practicable by the rules of civil procedure and evidence observed in the criminal proceedings of the United States district courts; (3) all persons charged with an offense are to have competent legal counsel at all stages of pretrial and trial proceedings; (4) all persons subject to the Code are assured that they shall not be subject to compulsory self-incrimination; (5) all who are subject to the Code are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and (6) all are guaranteed an automatic and mandatory review (under certain conditions) of their trials.

It is the purpose of this thesis to point out areas of failure and weaknesses in the Federal independent regulatory commissions, and recommendations for improvement, as seen by Louis J. Hector, James M. Landis, Emmette S. Redford, Bernard Schwartz and the Special Subcommittee on Legislative Oversight. A secondary purpose of the study is to present action taken by Congress and President Kennedy in response to recent criticisms of the commissions. The scope of the thesis is limited to the major problems of policy-making, personnel matters, and efficiency of the major independent regulatory commissions. The material presented in the thesis covers five chapters. Chapter I includes a general introductory statement, the purpose and scope of the study, and the method of organization. Chapter II is a presentation of the criticisms and recommendations of Hector, Redford, and Landis in respect to the problems of policy-making and coordination faced by the independent commissions. Chapter III examines the problems of commission personnel in respect to qualifications, turnover, and ethical conduct. Chapter IV concerns the efficiency of the independent commissions, showing examples of delay and incompetence in the performance of the functions of the CAB, the FPC, and other commissions. Instead of putting the emphasis on color in his orchestration, Brahms felt that the music was more important; not the orchestration. However, it would be a mistake to feel that he was deaf to orchestral color. When discussing color in regard to Brahms' orchestration it is necessary to realize that his use of color is much different than that of his contemporaries. This thesis discusses the four symphonies of Brahms and his usage of brass instruments within these symphonies, specifically the french horn, trumpet, trombone and tuba. It is apparent that he used considerable care in writing for the brasses as well as the other instruments and had complete command of the use of their individual colors.

The present investigation was focused on the problem of identification and detection of Juvenile delinquency. The purpose of the study was to determine if Juvenile delinquents whose first offenses were runaway or auto theft differ significantly from non-delinquents of a church group. The two delinquent groups were examined to determine if a significant difference existed.

The purpose of this study is to describe contemporary plans for training the boy's changing voice and to prescribe ensemble material for these voices. Specific Problems: Analysis of the general problem leads to subordinate questions, or sub-problems, which may be stated as follows: 1. What are the contemporary plans of training the boy's changing voice? 2. What are the most usable musical materials available for use by ensembles which include boys with changing voices?

The present study was concerned with the relationship between level of aspiration and anxiety. Level of aspiration is a term used for goal setting behavior. In other words, if a person sets his goals high it is said that he has a high level of aspiration. Anxiety, for the purpose of the present study is assumed to possess drive properties. Theoretically, at least, a highly anxious person has a high drive level. This assumption may be warranted in terms of physiological unrest--causing an effort toward equilibrium or homeostasis; or it can be defended psychologically as the need to achieve or the need to prove one's abilities to himself. However, the present paper was not concerned directly with the current controversy of anxiety as a drive mechanism. Rather it was the general purpose of the study to determine whether or not highly anxious college students set their goals higher, in response to previous experimental success or failure experiences than low anxious students. To be more specific the purpose was to determine whether or not highly anxious subjects differ significantly from low anxious subjects with respect to responses on a level of aspiration task. The problem of this study was to survey the status of art in the secondary schools of Oklahoma. Art educators today are faced with a lack of uniformity in the teaching of art. There is an increasing need for a recognized art program and a placing of renewed emphasis on the teaching of art. Clear and comprehensive attitudes and ideas toward art in the Oklahoma public schools would tend to ease these difficulties and enrich teaching. There has been a great deal of critical thinking, but this has failed to produce the answers necessary to formulate a basis on which to build a good art program. This study was an attempt to survey the individual schools to determine the present status of art in the secondary schools of Oklahoma.

Many of the causes for delinquency are known, but more investigation is needed in the prediction of future delinquent behavior. It was in this area of delinquency that this study was concerned. The problem was to compare scores made on the IES Test by a group of nondelinquent males with those made by a group of delinquent males to determine if the IES Test would discriminate between these two groups.
