Photograph used for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "Shrinking Water line has left most of sprawling Lake Altus resembling a parched basin with the reservoir at its lowest level since 1957. The water line shows how the lake has receded from its normal stage when the shoreline extends to the dotted lines. Today, Lake Altus has only 16,800 acre-feet of water, a drop from its whopping 139,000 acre-feet capacity. During the spring and summer, about 70,000 acre feet of water was released to farmers in the Lugert-Altus Irrigation District. this was based on an allotment of nine inches of water per irrigable acre for the 1964 season at $5 per acre-foot. To date, around 54,000 acres of land in the district have been irrigated from the lake. In all, 65,000 acres are under irrigation."
