The water line shows how the lake has receded from its normal stage when the shoreline extends to the dotted lines. Today, Lake Altus has only 16,800 acre-feet of water, a drop from its whopping 139,000 acre-feet capacity. During the spring and summer, about 70,000 acre feet of water was released to farmers in the Lugert-Altus Irrigation District. this was based on an allotment of nine inches of water per irrigable acre for the 1964 season at $5 per acre-foot. To date, around 54,000 acres of land in the district have been irrigated from the lake. In all, 65,000 acres are under irrigation."
