Bovine Thyroid I 131 in the Absence of Atmospheric Nuclear Weapons Tests
Summary. Cattle in Reno, Nevada, exhibit a constant very low concentration of I 131 in their thyroid glands in the absence of known releases of I 131 to the atmosphere. This concentration is about 1 picocurie per gram of fresh thyroid tissue. ; This I 131 appears to originate below the tropopause

Measurements of Plant Carbon Dioxide Exchange by Infra-Red Absorption Under Controlled Conditions and in the Field
This technical report finds that "Infra-red gas analysis provides the most rapid and accurate method of measuring CO2 exchange by terrestrial plants in the field or in the laboratory." Reconnaissance for Uranium in the Copiapo Area, Province of Atacama, Chile

Hazards Report for SM-1 Core Temperature and Flow Instrumentation (Task XIV) Covering Special Test Procedures.
Abstract: Test procedures for special tests involving in-core SM-1 temperature and flow instrumentation are described (Task XIV Package Tests). These tests involve in-core steady state flow and temperature measurements, loss of flow transients, load transients, reduced primary system pressure operations and reduced element flow. The thermal and hydraulic conditions prevailing in these tests, including steady state and transient burnout rations, are developed. The effects of reduced system pressure and flow on the burnout ratios are determined as are the expected stuck rod conditions when Task XIV test elements are installed. The effect on the maximum credible accident is included and a recommendation to conduct these Task XIV package tests is made.

Determination of Neptunium by Extraction With Tri-n-Octylamine
Technical report. From Abstract : "An analytical method was developed for the determination of Np237 in solutions that contain plutonium and fission products. Np (IV) was extracted into tri-n-octylamine. A quantitative recovery of a Np237 standard was obtained with a coefficient of variation of 1.0% (n=10). A coefficient of variation of 3% was obtained for seven analyses of a process sample."

Separation of Neptunium and Plutonium by Anion Exchange
Technical report. From Abstract : "The separation of neptunium and plutonium by anion exchange in nitrate solutions was studied under a wide variety of experimental conditions. A method of separation was developed that is adaptable to remote operation in the plant. In the method, Np(IV) and Pu(IV) are absorbed on an anion exchange resin from 8M nitrate solution. The column is washed with 8M HNO3 to remove contaminants; then the Pu is removed as Pu(III) by washing the column with HNO3 containing ferrous sulfamate and hydrazine. Finally, the Np is eluted with dilute HNO3."

Seismic Waves from an Underground Explosion in a Salt Bed: Preliminary Report
From abstract: Seismic waves resulting from a 5 kiloton nuclear detonation 1200 feet deep in a salt bed near Carlsbad, New Mexico were measured by strong-motion seismographs operated by the Coast and Geodetic Survey on the surface in the distance range from 0.5 to 8.8 miles and underground in a potash mine 8.7 to 11.2 miles distant.

A Bond-Cell Method for Complex Molecules and Metals
This technical report introduces "some approximations into the basic quantum mechanical theory" so that the theory of the covalent bond and the molecular orbital method "can be combined into one which will yield quantitative rather than qualitative binding energies and cohesive energies and also distinct energy levels and band structure." This approach will provide a common method "suitable to both solid state physicists and physical chemists, for calculating the energy levels in metals and complex molecules." The Preparation and Properties of Molybdenum(IV) Bromide
From abstract: "The preparation of pure molybdenum(IV) bromide was accomplished conveniently by the reaction between molybdenum(III) bromide and liquid bromine at ca. 55°. Molybdenum(IV) bromide was found to be soluble in liquid bromine, and this property was utilized to separate and purify the molybdenum(IV) bromide. The solution of MoBr4 in bromine was a poor electrical conductor. No evidence was found for the formation of MoBr4 from MoBr3 and bromine vapor at 2-4 atm. and temperatures from 180 to 400°. However, MoBr4 was completely decomposed at 110-130°, in vacuo, with formation of MoBr3 and bromine."

Pilot Plant Development Studies of a Continuous Process for Recovering Uranium from Nichrome Fuels
