Delayed Failure Hydrogen Embrittlement of Zirconium: Quarterly Report Number 2, December 1961 - March 1962
Abstract: "The purpose of this investigation is to determine the extent to which zirconium and zirconium alloys exhibit delayed failure (static fatigue) as caused by a combination of absorbed hydrogen and applied stress. Both notched and unnotched specimens of unalloyed zirconium and Zircaloy-2 have been hydrogenated to 200 ppm by means of a modified Sieverts apparatus; specimens were evaluated at room temperature. Thus far, no time-dependent fracture has been observed which can be attributed to the delayed failure phenomenon; it appears that these materials are relatively insensitive to static fatigue. The effects of grain size, temperature, cold deformation, and superheated water and steam corrosion on susceptibility to delayed failure are being determined."

Ground-Water Investigations of the Project GNOME Area, Eddy and Lea Counties, New Mexico
From abstract: The U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, through the Office of Test Operations, Albuquerque Operations Office, plans to detonate a nuclear device in a massive salt bed 1,200 feet beneath the land surface. The project, known as Project Gnome, is an element of the Plowshare program--a study of peacetime applications of nuclear fission. The location of the proposed underground shot is in a sparsely-populated area in southeastern Eddy County, N. Mex., east of the Pecos River and about 25 miles southeast of the city of Carlsbad.

Interim Geological Investigations in the U12e.03a and U12e.03b Tunnels, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada
From introduction: The geologic studies in the Ul2e.03a and Ul2e.03b tunnels were conducted as part of the Geological Survey's investigations for the Vela Uniform program, Project Shade, and were completed for the purpose of 1) determining the preshot lithologic, structural, and chemical and physical properties of the tuffs exposed in the tunnels for comparison wits postshot geologic data, and 2) evaluating these data in order to predict the geologic effects of the planned nuclear explosion at tie end of the tunnels.

From Abstract: "If a chemocouple is defined as an isothermal closed circuit, composed of two or more homogeneous ionic aqueous phases separated by two or more barriers of different sets of ionic transport numbers, we find that a spontaneous electric current flows in the closed circuit."

Thermal Analysis of Type 3 Elements in the SM-1, SM-1A and PM-2A Cores
Report describing a study which analyzed thermal characteristics of Type 3 elements planned for installation in the SM-1, SM-1A and PM-2A plants, for both steady state and loss of flow transient conditions. Results of this analysis for steady state conditions indicate that the SM-1, SM-1A and PM-2A Type 3 cores will operate safely at design and scram conditions.

Relation Between Dual Acidity and Structure of H-Montmorillonite
The following report covers potentiometric studies with hydrogen-sensitive and cation-sensitive glass electrodes supplemented by chemical determinations and X-ray diffractions on a hydrogen-montmorillonite. These studies indicate that the clay behaves as a mixture of two acids, resulting from the presence of interlayer and edge exchange sites, both occupied by hydrogen ions.

Cost Estimation for Nuclear Reprocessing Plants : a Comparison of Methods
A comparison of methods of capital cost estimation used for nuclear fuel reprocessing plants shows that, because of the special nature and complexity of such plants, cost estimation methods for conventional chemical plants involving the use of cost factors are not applicable and will give low estimates. Cost factors which are available from other countries where reprocessing plants are installed should be used with caution since those factors apply only for the particular design philosophy used and pertain to industrial conditions which are different in this county. Capital cost estimation methods involving direct take-offs from detailed design drawings are necessary to obtain reliable estimates. The methods of estimating operating costs for nuclear reprocessing and conventional chemical plants are similar.

A Method for Constructing the Complete HIFAR Neutron Spectrum from the Available Spectral Indices
A method is given for constructing the complete neutron spectrum for a well-moderated thermal reactor such a HIFAR, from the total effective flux, the temperature of the Maxwellian, the epithermal spectral index and the total integrated fission flux. A sample calculation is also included.
