Geologic Summary of the Central Valley of California with Reference to the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (open access)

Geologic Summary of the Central Valley of California with Reference to the Disposal of Radioactive Waste

From introduction: This report describes the geology of the area only to the extent necessary for preliminary evaluation of the possibilities for the disposal of liquid radioactive waste by injection through deep wells. Their value will increase with development of extensive commercial production of atomic power and attendant creation of radioactive waste from the processing of spent fuel elements. The disposal of liquid waste in deep reservoirs is only one of several possibilities that must be considered.

Strontium Sorption Studies on Crandallite (open access)

Strontium Sorption Studies on Crandallite

Abstract: "Crandallite ores may be useful in the treatment of nuclear waste solutions because of their reactivity with strontium in weakly acid solutions and in alkaline solutions containing aluminum. The exchange capacity of the crandallite samples studies is not very high, being 6-10 miliequivalents of strontium and 2 milliequivalents of cesium per 100 grams of active phosphatic material. However, strontium removal is many times more effective from alkaline solutions, precipitation being the dominant mechanism. The removal of strontium is even more complete in alkaline solutions containing aluminate ions."

Ground Water Test Well A, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada: A Summary of Lithologic Data, Aquifer (open access)

Ground Water Test Well A, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada: A Summary of Lithologic Data, Aquifer

Abstract: "ground-water test well A was drilled to a depth of 1,870 feet with rotary and cable-tool equipment. Only alluvial materials were penetrated. These were saturated below 1,605 feet. Pumping and bailing tests indicate that the minimum transmissibility of the alluvium is about 800 gallons per day per foot. The specific capacity was 1.9 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown after 1 hours of pumping at rates of both 41 and 60 gallons per minute. A suite of geophysical logs, a summary of contract costs, and a detailed description of drilling equipment and casing record are presented."
