Report presenting a bibliography of about 550 references of the soft X-ray literature since 1950 and through 1960. The emphasis is on the application of soft X-ray spectroscopy to the study of valence band electronic states in metals and alloys. Therefore, the spectral region of 25 to 800 angstroms involving ruled glass grating spectrometers is of principal interest. In addition to soft X-ray data, references on all pertinent aspects of the apparatus and experimental problems are included. Also listed separately are references of value in corroborating soft X-ray data with other results. Subject, author, X-ray band, material, and other indices are included.

Report documenting standard x-ray diffraction powder patterns for various compounds, intended to replace previous data or provide information for new substances. It describes the methods and, for each substance, outlines any previous data as well as information about the sample used and structural data, with a table of diffraction patterns.

From Object and Scope of This Paper: "This paper describes the apparatus and procedures used at the National Bureau of Standards for the measurement of d-c resistance when an accuracy of a few parts in a million is required. The object will be to explain procedures in detail and as simply as possible, with a minimum reference to theory."

Report reviewing the theoretical methods of optical pyrometry and the application of these methods at the National Bureau of Standards in realizing, maintaining and distributing the International Practical Temperature Scale above 1063 ºC is presented. In the theoretical presentation, the concepts of effective and mean effective wavelengths are introduced, and various equations relating these parameters to each other and other physical quantities are derived. The methods presentation discusses important features of precision visual optical pyrometers, experimental procedures, and results of primary and secondary calibrations of optical pyrometers.

The need for thermodynamic functions of para hydrogen, especially in compressed liquid and dense fluid states, prompts the tabulation of these provisional properties, computed by approximate methods utilizing the new PVT data of these reports. While the primary objective is to focus on vacuum measurement, it was believed essential to include in the bibliography articles on vacuum technology in some measure accessory or essential to vacuum measurement. For maximum usefulness, an index of the subject matter of the references has been prepared. The abstract publications listed in the previous paragraph have been freely drawn upon in preparing the bibliography."

From Introduction: "The purpose of this report is to present an analysis of time variations in: (1) the phase (relative to a stable phase reference) if a 9414 Mc/s signal transmitted over this path, referred to hereafter as single-path phase data; (2) the phase observed at one receiving antenna relative to that observed at an adjacent antenna, referred to as phase difference data; (3) atmospheric refractivity as recorded by a microwave refractometer located at the Haleakala terminal; (4) the wind velocity at both ends of the path, and (5) surface atmospheric refractivity measured at 5 stations located on or near the path."

From Abstract: "Comparisons with other intensity measurements in individual spectra indicate that the National Bureau of Standards spectral-line intensities may have average errors of 20 percent, but first of all they provide uniform quantitative values for the seventy chemical elements commonly determined by spectrochemists. These data are presented by element in part I, and all 39,000 observed lines are given in order of wavelength in part II."

From Preface: "A brief description of the method used in compiling these tables and the limitation of coverage is given in the preface to Supplement 1. A description of the numbering system used is classifying reactions for the tables is given in Supplement 2. The present supplement contains information pertaining to Substitution, Exchange and Elimination reaction types. It is not complete as still more material falling groups is being prepared."

Report is a text revision of the International Temperature Scale of 1948; the numerical values of temperatures remain the same. The adjective "Practical" was added to the name by the International Committee on Weights and Measures. The scale continues to be based upon six fixed and reproducible equilibrium temperatures to which values have been assigned, and upon the same interpolation formulas relating temperatures to the indications of specified measuring instruments. Some changes have been made in the text to make the scale more reproducible than its predecessor. The triple point of water, with the value 0.01 ºC replaces the former ice point as a defining fixed point of the scale. It is also recommended that the zinc point, with the value 419.505 ºC, be used instead of the sulfur point. The recommendations include new information that has become available since 1948.
