Magnetic Properties of Some Intra-Rare Earth Alloys (open access)

Magnetic Properties of Some Intra-Rare Earth Alloys

Technical report. From Abstract : "Paramagnetic susceptibilities of samarium structure alloys in the systems La-Gd, Nd-Y, Nd-Tm, and Ce-Y were measured from 4.2 - 300°K to determine what effect the formation of this structure has on the magnetic properties of the alloys. Susceptibility maxima were observed in the Nd-Y and Nd-Tm alloys, at 34.5 and 28.5°K, respectively. Slope changes were observed in the curve of 1/x versus T for the La-Gd alloy at 155 and 130°K, and the susceptibility of this alloy remained temperature-independent from 130-7°K. A rather poorly defined region of constant susceptibility was also observed or the Ce-Y alloy, from 26-37°K. Above these transition temperatures, the alloys obeyed the Curie-Weiss law, the susceptibilities of the La-Gd and Ce-Y samples indicating the possibility of electron transfer occurring in these cases."

Magnetically Dilute Alloys, Rare-Earth Metals, and Superconductivity (open access)

Magnetically Dilute Alloys, Rare-Earth Metals, and Superconductivity

From introduction: "The basic interactions which give rise to the interesting magnetic properties of dilute alloys, such as cobalt in palladium, have received a great deal of attention both theoretically and experimentally. This problem has many facets which are peculiarly interrelated. For example, there is the problem of Curie points of the order of magnitude of 10°K for concentrations of 'magnetic' ions of 0.1%. It has been proposed that this problem involves virtual d-states (Friedel) which permit one to understand much of what is observed."

The Mass Spectra of Some Volatile Hydrides

From abstract: "The hydrides of group VB an VB elements, except CH4 and NH3, have been prepared and, except for PbH4 and BiH3, their mass spectra studied. Fragmentation patterns and appearance potentials of the positive ions from these hydrides are reported. The ions have been tested for excess kinetic energy and this energy was found to be negligible. The average M-H bond energies and the ΔHf° obtained from appearance potential data agree well with values obtained by other methods. Evidence is cited for the existence of distibine."

Microwave Measurements of Hall Mobilities in Semiconductors (open access)

Microwave Measurements of Hall Mobilities in Semiconductors

From abstract: "The Hall mobilities of germanium single crystals were measured with a microwave frequence of 9000 Mc/sec over the temperature range 30°K to 300°K. A rectangular sample occupied the central part of the wall of a rectangular cavity, which was doubly generate in the TE101 mode and in the TE011 mode at a single resonance microwave frequency. The external magnetic field and microwave field associated with one of the two modes gave rise to the other mode of oscillation, owing to excitation by the microwave Hall field. The theoretical analysis was verified by measurements on an n-type sample having a room temperature resistivity of 0.40 ohm cm. The measured Hall mobility at microwave frequencies (with a size correction) was compared with the D.C. Hall mobility between 30°K to 300°K. The maximum discrepancy was 15%. The estimated experimental error in the microwave measurement was 16%. The magnetic field dependence of the microwave Hall mobility in a p-type sample, having a room temperature resistivity of a 0.77 ohm cm, was in qualitative agreement with the D.C. results obtained by Willardson et al."

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Line Shapes Resulting From the Combined Effects of Nuclear Quadrupole and Anisotropic Shift Interactions. I. Theory (open access)

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Line Shapes Resulting From the Combined Effects of Nuclear Quadrupole and Anisotropic Shift Interactions. I. Theory

From introduction: "A nuclear quadrupole interaction may occur simultaneously in conjunction with an anisotropic magnetic shift in a variety of solids. The non-cubic pure metals, in particular the hexagonal close-packed ones, afford a considerable number of examples, some which have already been studied. Among the latter may be listed Ga, In, and Te, and the list of possibilities must include Ti, Zr, Hf, Lu, Sc, and La, and perhaps others. Nuclear magnetic resonances in intermetallic compounds may also be expected to exhibit these combined effects. The cubic Laves phase compounds of the MgCu2 type have provided a number of examples, principally involving Al[^]27 nucleus. transition metal borides and beryllides, as well as other hexagonal and tetragonal intermetallics may also be included in this category. Finally, the nuclear magnetic resonance of the halogen nuclei in the paramagnetic chlorides, bromides, and iodides of transition metals will in general reflect the presence of both types of interaction. In the following section the theory for these combined effects is considered in some detail..."
