1000-Mwe SGR. 90% ThO₂, 10% UO₂ Alternate Fuel Core Thermal and Hydraulic Analysis
The thermal and hydraulic core parameters were determined using the SORTD I code for 90% ThO/sub 2/, 10% UO/sub 2/ fuel both for (1) a core containing 592 fuel elements corresponding to the UC reference core with a maximum UC temperature of 2000 deg F and (2) a core containing 784 fuel elements corresponding to a UC core with a maximum UC temperature of 1750 deg F. Eighteen rod elements with 2.5 in./sup 2/ and 3.5 in./sup 2/ fuel areas, and 30 rod elements with 4.5 in./sup 2/ and 5.5 in./sup 2/ fuel areas are analyzed for 8 cases. (auth)

Amine Extraction of Plutonium From Nitric Acid Solutions Loading and Stripping Experiments
Information is presented on a suitable amine processing system for plutonium nitrate. Experiments with concentrated plutonium nitrate solutions show that trilaurylamine (TLA) - xylene solvent systems did not form a second organic phase. Experiments are also reported with tri-noctylamine (TnOA)-xylene and TLA-Amsco - octyl alcohol. Two organic phases appear in both these systems at high plutonium nitrate concentrations. Data are tabulated from loading and stripping experiments. (J.R.D.)

Analysis of the stored energy distribution in D-reactor
The purpose of this document is to characterize, as completely as possible, the stored energy distribution in D Reactor as of March 1958, the date of the last stored energy survey and to estimate the temperature rises which can be expected to occur during a stored energy release. D Reactor was chosen for this study only because it represents one of the oldest operating Hanford reactors and not because of any circumstances peculiar to this reactor. 14 refs., 13 figs.

Annealing of Radiation Induced Defects in Fused Silica
Technical report describes how glasses and crystals subjected to ionizing radiation develop absorption bands and become colored. The coloring of defects can be used to determine how nuclear reactor induced defects anneal out or disappear as an irradiated sample is heated.

The Application of Wax Laps to Vibratory Polishers
From introduction: "In this paper the adaptation of the wax lab surface vibratory polisher is described. The wax lap requires little maintenance during the life of the lap. It is not necessary to remove any of the holding devices on the bowl to clean and recondition the lap. The bowl is merely washed out, recharged and placed in operation. The wax lap will not wrinkle or tear, nor is it necessary to change it each day such as the silk or nylon cloths."

The Biological Effects of heavy Cosmic Ray Particles
Technical report investigates creating a microbeam of deuterons to simulate cosmic rays and the results of brain irradiation, irradiation of the eye, and irradiation of hair follicles of mice. The report's conclusion was that "astronauts exposed to heavy primary particles over a period of some weeks would be expected to develop gray hairs, but this is the only significant biological damage they would suffer."

A Bond-Cell Method for Complex Molecules and Metals
This technical report introduces "some approximations into the basic quantum mechanical theory" so that the theory of the covalent bond and the molecular orbital method "can be combined into one which will yield quantitative rather than qualitative binding energies and cohesive energies and also distinct energy levels and band structure." This approach will provide a common method "suitable to both solid state physicists and physical chemists, for calculating the energy levels in metals and complex molecules." This report also contains figures detailing the findings. (Quotations taken from introduction)

C-1 coproduct development for N Reactor: Excerpts from N-Reactor Department research and development budget for FY-1967 and revision of budget for FY-1966
This report discusses the production of weapon grade plutonium and tritium as an economically attractive mode of operation for N-Reactor. With the successful completion of the proposed research and development program coproduct production in N-Reactor could begin in January 1967. Approximately 5 kg of tritium could be produced at a reduction in unit total cost of up to $7 per gram equivalent when compared to other modes of operation of N-Reactor that yield only-weapon grade plutonium. Achieving this production level and unit cost requires a fuel and target design that will subject the materials to more severe temperature and exposure conditions than for the tube-in-tube design. Analyses of existing knowledge and experimental results obtained to date are very encouraging. However, there is a continuing need for additional experimental verification of the limiting conditions for both fuel and target to permit the specification of a production fuel and target design. The incremental cost of this program is estimated to be $1,055 million in FY-1965, $0.796 million in FY-1966 and $0.450 million in FY-1967 for a total of $2.3 million. The principal benefits to be derived from this expenditure of research and development funds are lower unit grade plutonium. When the reactor …

Causes of reactor shutdowns
The purpose of this report is to present an analysis of causes of reactor shutdown as a support to various engineering programs presently under study. Continuing measurement and correlation of these facts can demonstrate the incentives and the necessity for modifying or changing present concepts in reactor safety and control circuits as reactor power levels are continuously increased.

Cell Population Studies on the Intestine of Continuously Irradiated Rats
This technical report introduces a new method to capture entire cell populations in the intestines of rats, which have been continuously exposed to radiation. This report finds that the "total number of cells per crypt found after 5 days of irradiation decreases with increasing dose rate." This report includes four figures and two tables detailing findings.
