Report issued by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the magnetic base stations located in Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The report evaluates the usefulness of the stations for calibration of certain instruments. This report contains tables, graphs, maps, and illustrations.

From Introduction and Summary: "Reports from operating companies showed that 25,715 men worked at coke ovens in 1951, about 6 percent more than were employed in 1950 and, except in 1943, the largest work force since 1930, when 28,139 men were employed. The work time for all employees was 70,190,493 man-hours. The returns indicated an average of 344 work days per man as compared with 341 days in the previous year. Accidents at the ovens resulted in the death of 10 and injury to 768 workers, both of these figures representing fewer injuries than in 1950."

From abstract: The Palmer area, which is on the south limb of the Marquette synclinorium, consists of a down-faulted block of pre-Cambrian sedimentary rocks about 4 miles long and three-quarters of a mile wide. The block is composed mainly of middle Huronian Ajibik quartzite and Negaunee iron-formation and upper Huronian Goodrich quartzite,. Monazite occurs in the Goodrich quartzite as rounded detrital grains concentrated mainly in the matrix of quartz pebble conglomerate which is interbedded with coarse-grained quartzite.

Report discussing an investigation of the geology and monazite content of the Goodrich quartzite, which was present in the Palmer area of Marquette County, Michigan. This investigation was motivated by the detection of abnormal radioactivity in Goodrich quartzite of the area.

Report discussing the geology of an occurrence of minor amounts of uranium-bearing pitchblende discovered in 1949 by the East Branch of the Huron River, which was subsequently diamond drilled and explored at shallow depths.

From abstract: Metatorbernite and bassetite are present in altered carbonaceous and quartzose slate of probable upper Huronian age. The slate is part of a small inlier of Huronian rocks between the Gwinn iron district to the southeast and the Marquette iron district to the northwest, Marquette County, Mich. Samples taken from a shallow trench, which was dug in the area of highest radioactivity, contained as much as 0.68 percent uranium. A 4-foot channel sample of the slate contained 0.036 percent uranium.

Abstract: "The relative isotopic abundance of copper has been measured in a number of minerals. Suites of samples from Michigan and the Colorado Plateau have been examined to determine if local variations due to isotopic exchange or diffusion could be found. The relative isotopic abundance of copper in specimens from a number of other places was also determined. The variations noted were small but in most cases were felt to be significant because they were larger than the experimental error (0.1 percent in the ratio). A total spread of +3 to -8 parts per mil compared to the standard was found in the specimens tested."

From Introduction: "The data included in this report for Nimonic 80A alloy, for instance, represent experiments carried out to help clarify a production problem of grain-size control in an alloy which has been extensively used. The general procedure of the investigation was to carry out controlled laboratory experiments on samples of bar stock to find conditions of heating and hot-working which resulted in abnormal grain growth."

From Introduction: "The concept of supersonic combustion is by no means new, although little work appears to have been published on the subject. For example, an analysis of supersonic combustion to provide lift under a wing is given in reference 1. Reference 2 discusses applications to hypersonic ramjets being studied at the University of Michigan."
