This report treats the effect of aspect ratio on the air forces and moments of an oscillating flat rectangular wing in supersonic potential flow. The linearized velocity potential for the wing undergoing sinusoidal torsional oscillations simultaneously with sinusoidal vertical translations is derived in the form of a power series in terms of a frequency parameter. The series development is such that the differential equation for the velocity potential is satisfied to the required power of the frequency parameter considered and the linear boundary conditions are satisfied exactly. The method of solution can be utilized for other plan forms, that is, plan forms for which certain steady-state solutions are known.

The third investigation in a series to determine the fundamental characteristics of trailing-edge controls at transonic speeds. This particular report uses a 35 degree sweptback untapered airfoil model with an aspect ratio of 3 and a flap with a bevelled trailing edge with a trailing-edge angle of 23 degrees. Results regarding lift, pitching-moment, and hinge-moment characteristics are provided.

Report presenting an investigation of the NACA 4-(4)(06)-057-45A and NACA 4-(4)(06)-057-45B two-blade swept propellers in the high-speed tunnel at blade angles of 25 degrees, 55 degrees, 60 degrees, 65 degrees, and 70 degrees. The swept propellers were compared with straight propellers and were found to be 10 percent more efficient at a forward Mach number of 0.85 for the design blade angle of 60 degrees. Results regarding the effect of forward Mach number, blade sweep, advance ratio, and constant power coefficient on efficiency are also provided.

Report discussing an investigation of the longitudinal trim and drag characteristics of two airplane configurations through the transonic speed range. One configuration had a thin straight wing and tail and one had a thicker 35 degree sweptback wing and a 46 degree sweptback tail on the same fuselage-fin arrangement. Information about the control effectiveness and stability and application to a full-scale airplane is also provided.

This progress report discusses the activities of the P Division for the month of January 1950. The B, D, F and H pilan operated throughout the month except for outages listed under Area Activities. Power levels were as follow: B pile -- 275 megawatts (MW) D pile -- 305 MW, F pile -- 275 MW increased to 305 MW during the month, and H pile -- 275 MW increased to 330 MW during the month. The piles operated with a time operated'' efficiency of 88.8%. A total of 53.07 tons of metal at an average of 91.2% of the current goal concentration was discharged from the piles during the month. A new record canning yield of 93.9% for 4 inch canned slugs was established during January.

Report presenting a temperature survey made in the wake of two closely located parallel jets emerging into the atmosphere from two types of twin convergent nozzles. Results regarding the twin unshrouded nozzles and twin nozzles with twin geometry-simulated shrouds are provided.

Neutrons produced by 350 Mev protons impinging on beryllium are scattered by hydrogen. We measure the differential scattering cross section as a function of the scattering angle. Results are summarized in Fig. 3 of the paper.

This report covers an investigation made to develop a gasometric determination that can determine 1.2 x 10-(-5) g. of nitrite with a precision (99% limits) of +/- 8%, and discusses how this procedure works.

Report presenting an experimental investigation of thrust augmentation of a 4000-pound-thrust axial-flow-type turbojet engine by interstage injection of water-alcohol mixtures into the compressor at sea-level, zero-ram conditions. the number, size, and arrangement of interstage nozzles were varied to produce a satisfactory augmentation system of minimum complication. Results regarding the unaugmented performance with and without interstage-injection nozzles, augmented performance with three-stage system, augmented performance with other injection systems, temperature surveys, and engine operation are provided.

Six subjects received a few millicuries Of tritium by inhalation of isotopically labeled hydrogen gas. The concentration of H{sup 3} in the urine of these individuals has been followed for a period of some 15 days. The rate of excretion of the tritium was found to be constant for a given subject but to vary considerably, among individuals. Data on five individuals arbitrarily normalized to coincide at zero time showed a range in biological half-life from about 9 days to nearly 13 days. These values are to be compared with the value calculated for the Chalk River ``Standard Man`` of 13.5 days, assuming the tritim to be confined to the body water.

Five isotopes of bismuth occur in nature. Using particle accelerators providing helium ions up to 40 Mev in energy and deuterons up to 20 Mev in energy, it was possible to produce and identify two artificial radioactive isotopes. With the advent of the 184-inch Berkeley syncho-cyclotron and its hundreds of Mev energies, it was possible to form highly neutron-deficient bismuth isotopes extending more than ten mass units below stable Bi(209).

The system pentaether-uranyl nitrate-nitric acid-water has been studied in the liquid-liquid region, Aqueous solutions containing 0.0M to 8.2M nitric acid and 0.0M to 2.3M uranyl nitrate were equilibrated with pentaether, and the effects of nitric acid concentration, uranyl nitrate concentration and temperature are discussed. Phase diagrams for the system are presented and approximate delta-H values are given.

The recent production and identification of isotopes of elements with atomic numbers up to six higher than the target element through bombardment with hexapositive 120-Mev carbon ions made it seem worthwhile to apply this technique to the transuranium region. Accordingly, small pieces of natural uranium metal (about 0.5 mil thick and 205 cm by 0.6 cm area) were irradiated in the internal carbon ion beam in the Berkeley 60-inch cyclotron. Following the irradiations, the uranium was dissolved in dilute hydrochloric acid containing hydrogen peroxide and a transplutonium fraction was isolated through the use of lanthanum fluoride, and lanthanum hydroxide precipitation steps followed by the ion exchange adsorption column procedure in which concentrated hydrochloric acid is used to separate the tripositive actinide elements from the rare earth elements. The transplutonium fractions in hydrochloric acid were evaporated as weightless films on platinum plates which were placed in the ionization chamber of the 48 channel pulse analyzer apparatus in order to measure the yield and energies of any alpha-particles which might be present. In the best experiment at about one hour after the end of the 90-minute bombardment, some 50 disintegrations per minute of the distinctive 7.1-Mev alpha-particles of Cf{sup 244} were observed …

Memorandum presenting an investigation of the low-speed static stability characteristics of a canard model with a 45 degree sweptback wing and a 60 degree triangular horizontal control surface. Results regarding longitudinal stability and control and lateral stability and control are provided.

The X-ray Spectrum Produced by 322 Mev Electrons Striking a Platinum Target. The differential energy spectrum of the photons produced by 322 Mev electrons striking a 20 mil platinum target was measured by observing the energy of 3467 pairs produced in a one mil thick lead foil in a Wilson cloud chamber in a magnetic field of 10,000 gauss. The spectrum is found to agree with that predicted by the Bethe-Heitler bremsstrahlung theory using a Thomas-Fermi model with suitable corrections for the thickness of the target. The energy of the 322 Mev electrons was determined by the spectrum of the photons observed in this experiment. Apparatus used and the experimental data and results obtained are reported fully in UCRL-660.

Report presenting a wind-tunnel investigation to determine the low-speed longitudinal and lateral control characteristics of a model with a triangular wing with NACA 65(06)-006.5 airfoil sections, aspect ratio 2.31, and constant-chord control surfaces. The values of the hinge-moment parameters were found to be of somewhat greater magnitude than would be expected on unswept wings with the same aspect ratio.
