The Use of Radioactive Bromide and Chloride to Measure Extracellular Fluid (open access)

The Use of Radioactive Bromide and Chloride to Measure Extracellular Fluid

During the last year we have been attempting to increase our understanding of the significance of the various dilution methods used to measure the extra-cellular fluid. When the dilution methods were first proposed to obtain a measure of the extracellular fluid volume, it was hoped that an agent could be found which would distribute uniformly and exclusively throughout this compartment, which would approach equilibrium rapidly, and which could be measured by simple and accurate procedures. We have turned our attention chiefly to the methods themselves using dogs and non-edematous adults as subjects.

Evaluation of Type 304 Stainless Steel as a Substitute for Type 347 (open access)

Evaluation of Type 304 Stainless Steel as a Substitute for Type 347

Abstract: "Type 347 stainless steel was selected for SIR applications requiring resistance to corrosion in sodium on the basis of limited corrosion data and extrapolation of experience in aqueous media. Subsequent testing indicated that carbide stabilization was not necessary for good resistance to corrosion in sodium. Evaluation of the unstabilized grade of 18-8 stainless steel, Type 304, was intensified because it offered a number advantages over Type 347. Type 304 was more readily available, required fewer strategic materials, was less expensive, and was reported to be weldable with less difficulty. From the results of this investigation, it appears that Type 304 can be substituted for 347 for all SIR applications where the slightly higher elevated temperature strength of 347 is not required."

Low-speed static longitudinal and lateral stability characteristics of a model with leading-edge chord-extensions incorporated on a 40 degree sweptback circular-arc wing of aspect ratio 4 and taper ratio 0.50 (open access)

Low-speed static longitudinal and lateral stability characteristics of a model with leading-edge chord-extensions incorporated on a 40 degree sweptback circular-arc wing of aspect ratio 4 and taper ratio 0.50

Report presenting an investigation to determine the aerodynamic effects at low speed of several wing leading-edge chord-extensions incorporated on a complete model with a 40 degree sweptback circular-arc wing of aspect ratio 4 and taper ratio 0.50. Testing indicated that the effectiveness of the chord-extension in increasing the stability is mainly dependent on the spanwise inboard-end location of the device. Results regarding the static longitudinal characteristics and effect of chord-extension span and overhang on the lateral-stability parameters are provided.

Free-flight performance of a rocket-boosted, air-launched 16-inch-diameter ram-jet engine at Mach numbers up to 2.20 (open access)

Free-flight performance of a rocket-boosted, air-launched 16-inch-diameter ram-jet engine at Mach numbers up to 2.20

From Summary: "The investigation of air-launched ram-jet engines has been extended to include a study of models with a nominal design free-stream Mach number of 2.40. These models require auxiliary thrust in order to attain a flight speed at which the ram jet becomes self-accelerating. A rocket-boosting technique for providing this auxiliary thrust is described and time histories of two rocket-boosted ram-jet flights are presented. In one flight, the model attained a maximum Mach number of 2.20 before a fuel system failure resulted in the destruction of the engine. Performance data for this model are presented in terms of thrust and drag coefficients, diffuser pressure recovery, mass-flow ratio, combustion efficiency, specific fuel consumption, and over-all engine efficiency."

Ignition delays of alkyl thiophosphites with white and red fuming nitric acids within temperature range 80 to -105 degrees Fahrenheit (open access)

Ignition delays of alkyl thiophosphites with white and red fuming nitric acids within temperature range 80 to -105 degrees Fahrenheit

Ignition delays of alkyl thiophosphites were obtained in a modified open-cup apparatus and a small-scale rocket engine apparatus. At -40 F, mixed alkyl thiophosphites gave short delays with white fuming nitric acid containing 2 percent water and red fuming nitric acids of widely varying compositions. At -40 F and higher, triethyl trithiophosphite blended with as much as 40 percent n-heptane gave satisfactory self-igniting properties at temperatures as low as -76 F.

Observations on the Behavior of Hydrogen in Zirconium (open access)

Observations on the Behavior of Hydrogen in Zirconium

Abstract: "Some embrittling effects noted in Zr have been explained by the presence of hydrogen. This phenomenon was initially correlated with the existence of a second phase in the microstructure. The amount of this phase is reduced by vacuum annealing and shows a direct correlation with the hydrogen content of the specimen. X-ray and electron-diffraction evidence identifies the phase as ZrH. Observations are given on the solubilities, diffusion rates and equilibrium pressures of hydrogen in zirconium, and the application of these data to the removal of hydrogen."

Theoretical Study of the Tunnel-Boundary Lift Interference Due to Slotted Walls in the Presence of the Trailing-Vortex System of a Lifting Model

"The equations presented in this report give the interference on the trailing-vortex system of a uniformly loaded finite-span wing in a circular tunnel containing partly open and partly closed walls, with special reference to symmetrical arrangements of the open and closed portions. Methods are given for extending the equations to include tunnel shapes other than circular. The rectangular tunnel is used to demonstrate these methods. The equations are also extended to nonuniformly loaded wings" (p. 361).

Economic evaluation of continuous UNH calcination (open access)

Economic evaluation of continuous UNH calcination

Recovered uranium from the Redox and TBP Plants is concentrated to 100 percent UNH by boiling off water and nitric acid in 224-U Building, and the UNH solution is then calcined or denitrated to UO{sub 3} powder in 18 batch-operated calcination pots, also in 224-U Building. Plans are proceeding now to add to the above denitration capacity by installing two additional batch calcination pots of larger diameter than the present 18 pots (6 ft. rather than 2.5 ft.). At the time of design scoping of the existing batch calcination facilities several years ago it was recognized that potential savings in direct labor and maintenance costs, and other operational advantages, would undoubtedly result from the development of a continuous calcination process. However, no continuous UNH calcination process existed at that time, and the 18 batch pots were installed modeled after similar-sized pots in use by the Mallinckrodt Chemical Company at St. Louis. A program to develop a suitable continuous UNH calcination process and equipment is now in progress with the objective augmenting or replacing the existing batch process in 224-U Building. This document sets forth the savings calculated for complete replacement of the batch pots with a new continuous process.
