Angular distribution of neutrons from a plane surface (open access)

Angular distribution of neutrons from a plane surface

From introduction: "This report determines lattice losses by considering the angular distribution of the neutrons emitted from the interior faces of the lattice and the exterior faces of the target. The purpose of this report is to investigate this problem by considering the dimensions of the faces to be large compared to the total mean free path."

Calculated thermal conductivities of pure gases and gaseous mixtures at elevated temperatures (open access)

Calculated thermal conductivities of pure gases and gaseous mixtures at elevated temperatures

From summary: "A method of calculating thermal conductivities of gases and mixtures of gases at elevated temperatures is presented. Results for carbon dioxide, helium, neon, nitrogen, and their binary mixtures are given for the temperature range of 273 degrees Kelvin to 800 degrees Kelvin. The calculated results for the pure gases are in agreement with the known experimental data."

The Chelate Process, IV. Process Flow Involving o-Dichlorobenzene as the Solvent for TTA

Comparative studies of a series of halogenated solvents, as carriers for TTA in the chelate process for plutonium extraction, indicate that ortho-dichlorobenzene most nearly satisfies the requirements that are set forth. A complete process design is presented for use with this solvent, and flow data and equipment capacities are given for dissolver solution and for uranium-free fission product solution as alternate feeds to the process.

The Determination of Zirconium

Abstract: "The method of Hayes and Jones, which uses p-dimethylaminoasophenylarsonic acid to precipitate zirconium, was studied for the range of one to seven micrograms of zirconium. The most strongly interfering ions, namely phosphate, fluoride, sulfate and the tetravalent cations of uranium, thorium and plutonium were studied. Two procedures are suggested."

The Development and Application of Capillary Absorption Cells

Abstract: "Various types of capillary absorption cells have been constructed from a variety of materials. These cells, having volumes as low as 160 microliters, have been used to increase the sensitivity of several colorimetrics methods as much as 1000 fold without appreciable loss of accuracy. Small volumes of solution must be used in order to concentrate the colored material present."

Estimation of Fission Product Beta Activity in Uranium Containing U-237 and UX (open access)

Estimation of Fission Product Beta Activity in Uranium Containing U-237 and UX

Abstract: "It has been found that a mixture of acetone and ethyl ether containing nitric acid will wash uranium and 98 per cent of its natural daughters from a celluloss pulp column. Eight per cent of a "fission product" spike also comes through in this fraction but may be reduced by suitable modifications. A second development with two molar hydrochloric acid washes out 83 per cent of the original spike activities, and an additional three per cent is obtained by extruding the column, ashing, and counting the ash. A tentative procedure is given and recoveries tabulated."

A Magnetically Controlled Quartz Fiber Microbalance

Abstract: "The design, simplified techniques of construction, and uses of an electromagnetically controlled quartz fiber microbalances are described. The balance is capable of weighing directly an unbalanced load as large as 1.2 milligrams, carrying a counter-balanced load of 100 to 150 milligrams, and giving a sensitivity of 0.1 microgram per 6 minutes of arc. The one-piece all-quartz balance unit fits into a 25 millimeter diameter tube 12 centimeters long. The balance may be used under wide conditions of temperature, pressure, and reagents in completely closed systems. The balance is controlled by an external variable electromagnetic field."

The Production of the Light Rare Earths in the Massive Metallic State

Abstract: "Cerium, lanthanum, praseodymium and neodymium metals have been prepared in high purity in the massive state by reducing the appropriate rare earth chloride with calcium metal, using iodine as an auxiliary oxidant. Vacuum remelting of the product metal is employed to eliminate small amounts of calcium and magnesium. Attempted reductions of samarium and yttrium halides have not been successful."
