Permeability variation of a taper-rolled wire cloth

Report presenting the cloth permeability of rolling a tapering thickness on a 20x200-mesh stainless-steel wire clothing investigated experimentally. The application of the cloth was for the shell of a transpiration-cooled turbine blade operating at gas and shell temperatures of 2500 and 10000 degrees Fahrenheit. Results regarding the taper-rolled cloth and comparison of taper-and flat-rolled samples are provided.

Preliminary investigation of combustion of diborane in a turbojet combustor

Boron and its hydrides offer increased flight range relative to conventional fuels for turbojet engines. Preliminary evaluation has been made of the combustion characteristics and deposition problems resulting from burning diborone in a single, modified J33 combustor. A combustor relatively free of deposits for the limited test conditions has been developed. Three possible methods of alleviating deposits on the turbine blades are reported.

Some Operating Experience and Problems Encountered During Operation of a Free-Jet Facility

During a free-jet investigation of a 28-inch ram-jet engine at a Mach number of 2.35, flow pulsation at the engine inlet were discovered which proved to have an effect on the engine performance and operational characteristics, particularly the engine rich blowout limits. This report discusses the finding of the flow pulsations, their elimination, and effect. Other facility characteristics, such as the establishment of flow simulation and the degree of subcritical operation of the diffuser, are also explained.

On flow of electrically conducting fluids over a flat plate in the presence of a transverse magnetic field

The use of a magnetic field to control the motion of electrically conducting fluids is studied. The incompressible boundary-layer solutions are found for flow over a flat plate when the magnetic field is fixed relative to the plate or to the fluid. The equations are integrated numerically for the effect of the transverse magnetic field on the velocity and temperature profiles, and hence, the skin friction and rate of heat transfer. It is concluded that the skin friction and the heat-transfer rate are reduced when the transverse magnetic field is fixed relative to the plate and increased when fixed relative to the fluid. The total drag is increased in all of the areas.

Both research-type and service-type aircraft are covered in the investigation. Results indicated that the magnitude of static-pressure errors for the airspeed installations of all the airplanes is shown to vary with airplane geometric characteristics that include nose-boom length, fuselage diameter, and nose fineness ratio.

The Disposal of Power Reactor Waste Into Deep Wells

For various reasons it is not possible to leave the uranium or other nuclear fuel in a power reactor until all of it has been "burned up" by fission. In the case of liquid fuel (homogeneous) reactors a small part is continuously bled out, purified and returned. In the case of solid fuel reactors, fuel elements are periodically removed, reprocessed and the "unburned" fuel put back into service. In both cases the purification produces wastes which contain radioactive fission products and transuranic elements, and it is with the disposal of these wastes that we are concerned. For technical reasons, we will limit our consideration to the wastes from the processing of solid fuel elements, and from the processing of the very similar solid "blanket" elements in which fissionable fuel is made from non-fissionable isotopes of uranium and thorium by interaction with neutrons in the outer regions of the nuclear reactor.

Evaluation of Loop Components and Admixed Thorium-3% Uranium Oxide Slurry in 200A Loop (Summary of Run 200A-10)

A slurry addition system, a venturi in the circulation loop, and two types of sampling systems were tested with 500 and 800 g Th/kg H2O slurries in the 200 gpm loop at 250 C and 1000 psig. The addition system worked satisfactorily while the venturi gave erratic readings during part of the run. Both the capillary and in-line sampling systems proved satisfactory with the capillary sampler being much easier and more convenient to operate. The addition of uranium to the slurry had no appreciable effect on the handling characteristics, the attack rate on 347 SS, the particle size and crystallite size of the thorium oxide. The attack rate was found to be 1 mpy during the first 100 hours of circulation and decreased to 0.4 mpy at the end of the run.

"Magnetic measurements were performance at excitation levels ranging from 4000 to 7600 gauss, to study the dynamic behavior of the magnetic and gradient lengths of the CEA magnet sectors. The influence of the proposed metal vacuum chamber on field and gradient was experimentally determined. Results of measurements made with a 26 in. long grad coil and with small circular grad coils are compared. The reliability of the 26 in. long grad coil is demonstrated."
