The Eastern Front of the Bitterroot Range, Montana (open access)

The Eastern Front of the Bitterroot Range, Montana

From abstract: The origin of the gneissic rocks on the eastern border of the Idaho batholith in the Bitterroot Range, near Hamilton, Mont., has long been in dispute. Lindgren regarded these rocks as the product of stresses related to a normal fault along the front of the range with an eastward dip of about 150. He thought both the hanging wall and the footwall had moved, with a total displacement along the fault plane of at least 20,000 feet. The faulting was believed to have been so recent as to be a major factor in the present topography. Langton appears to accept the concept of faulting but to regard the gneissic rocks as formed much earlier from a granitic rock that was more silicic and older than the Idaho batholith.

The Geological Survey's Work on the Geology of Uranium and Thorium Deposits (open access)

The Geological Survey's Work on the Geology of Uranium and Thorium Deposits

From abstract: The Geological Survey has been studying the geology of uranium and thorium continuously since 1939, when it began a comprehensive investigation of the vanadium-uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau. Greatly increased demand for uranium arising from the advent of controlled fission in 1942 resulted in widening of the study in 1944 to include other possible sources and in further expansion on behalf of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission since 1947. The wide variety of materials investigated in this study are embraced by five somewhat arbitrary groups of related types of deposits as follows: (1) Igneous rocks, pegmatites, veins, and related deposits; (2) Deposits in sandstone of carnotite, copper-uranium, and other minerals; (3) Other consolidated sedimentary rocks; (4) Placers; and (5) Natural fluids.

Notes on Eastern Oil Shale Drilling (open access)

Notes on Eastern Oil Shale Drilling

Purpose: The primary objective of the eastern oil shale drilling was to obtain cores of the Chattanooga shale, from considerable depths and at long distances from its outcrops. Correlation of the cores with outcrop samples showed the effect of weathering on the shale, as well as changes in the stratigraphy. Of secondary interest was acquisition of information on the stratigraphy of the overlying rocks.

Preliminary Report on Exploration in the Spud Patch Area, San Miguel County, Colorado

From introduction: From November 1949 to May 1952, the U. S. Geological Survey explored the Spud Patch area by diamond drilling to find carnotite deposits that would make new mines and to appraise the reserves of the area. Previous work and a brief outline of the general geology of the area have been reported (Bell and Icke, 1950; and Bell, 1952).

Reconnaissance for Uraniferous Rocks in Northeastern Wind River Basin, Wyoming (open access)

Reconnaissance for Uraniferous Rocks in Northeastern Wind River Basin, Wyoming

From abstract: A reconnaissance search for uraniferous rocks in the northeastern part of the Wind River Basin was made in July and August 1951 in the course of other work. In addition to Tertiary tuffs and associated lignite, coal, and carbonaceous rocks, some radioactivity anomalies, chiefly in granite, which had been detected by airborne equipment in November 1950, were checked on the ground. A tuff of middle or late Eocene age containing 0.003 percent uranium was as high in uranium as any rock found.
