Flux in a Rectangular Cavity. (open access)

Flux in a Rectangular Cavity.

A problem proposed by E. Hart to determine whether there are locally high or low neutron densities at the corners of a cubical cavity in a graphite lattice. To simplify the computations consider an infinite two dimensional lattice with a square cavity that has a point source of neutrons at the center (see Figure 1).

Preliminary Investigation of Cyclic De-Icing of an Airfoil Using an External Electric Heater (open access)

Preliminary Investigation of Cyclic De-Icing of an Airfoil Using an External Electric Heater

"An investigation was conducted in the NACA Lewis icing research tunnel to determine the characteristics and requirements of cyclic deicing of a 65,2-216 airfoil by use of an external electric heater. The present investigation was limited to an airspeed of 175 miles per hour. Data are presented to show the effects of variations in heat-on and heat-off periods, ambient air temperature, liquid-water content, angle of attack, and. heating distribution on the requirements for cyclic deicing" (p. 1).

An active particle diffusion theory of flame quenching for laminar flames (open access)

An active particle diffusion theory of flame quenching for laminar flames

An equation for quenching distance based on the destruction of chain carriers by the surface is derived. The equation expresses the quenching distance in terms of the diffusion coefficients and partial pressures of the chain carriers and gas phase molecules, the efficiency of the surface as a chain breaker, the total pressure of the mixture, and a constant which depends on the geometry of the quenching surface. Quenching distances measured by flashback for propane-air flames are shown to be consistent with the mechanism. The derived equation is used with the lean inflammability limit and a rate constant calculated from burning velocity data to estimate quenching distances for propane-air (hydrocarbon lean) flames satisfactorily.

Investigation of turbines suitable for use in a turbojet engine with high compressor pressure ratio and low compressor-tip speed 1: turbine-design requirements for several engine operating conditions (open access)

Investigation of turbines suitable for use in a turbojet engine with high compressor pressure ratio and low compressor-tip speed 1: turbine-design requirements for several engine operating conditions

In order to insure satisfactory turbine performance under five turbojet-engine operating conditions, turbine design requirements were determined for the following operating conditions: take-off, maximum thrust at altitude, altitude cruising at rated rotative speed, altitude cruising with maximum-thrust exhaust nozzle area, and engine acceleration at 80 percent equivalent design rotative speed. If cruising is to be at rated engine speed, both cruising and take-off should be considered in turbine design. Design requirements for the other conditions are nearly identical. Without compressor-exit bleed, a turbine cannot accelerate this compressor at 80 percent of rated speed; with 28.6-percent bleed, the design requirements are within those for take-off.

Neutron Streaming in a Cylindrical Cavity

The free streaming of neutrons in a cylindrical cavity is investigated. Using experimental data for the flux distribution along the walls, the direct beam hole loss and leakage into the target from the lattice is estimated for the MTA system.

Single Bend Tests on Welded Zirconium and Zirconium-Tin Alloys (open access)

Single Bend Tests on Welded Zirconium and Zirconium-Tin Alloys

Introduction: "Since it has been found that zirconium and zirconium-tin alloys may be embrittled by certain heat treatments, it was decided to determine if welding of these materials affects their ductility in any way. A single bend test in both the longitudinal and transverse directions was used for evaluation of the variables considered."

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Low-Speed Static Longitudinal Characteristics of the Republic RF-84F Airplane

From Summary: "Tests in the Ames 40- by 80-foot wind tunnel of the static longitudinal characteristics of the Republic RF-84F were made to determine both the origin and a suitable remedy for a pitch up tendency of the airplane encountered at moderate lift coefficients. The results indicated that the pitch-up at moderate lift coefficients was caused by an abrupt change in downwash at the tail which in turn was traceable presumably to flow conditions associated with the inlet-to-wing leading-edge discontinuity."

Determination of Cholesterol Digitonide with Anthrone (open access)

Determination of Cholesterol Digitonide with Anthrone

A new colorimetric method for the determination of cholesterol has been investigated. It makes use of the relatively stable green color given by a purified digitonin precipitate with the anthrone reagent of Dreywood. Equal precision can be obtained with the new method using 1/10 or less of the quantity of material required for present colorimetric methods.
