From introduction: Mapping, sampling, and radiometric reconnaissance of the uranium-bearing deposits in the Laramie formation in the vicinity of the Old Leyden coal mine, sec. 28, T. 2 S., R. 71 W., Jefferson County, Colorado (fig. 1), was completed August 10, 1951. Topographic and geologic maps were made of areas approximately 6,000 feet by 3,000 feet (scale 1:2h00), and 1,200 feet by 800 feet (scale 1:600). Underground workings at three clay mines and at the Old Leyden mine were also mapped. With the exception of the 1:600 map, which accompanies this report, these maps will be transmitted later with a more comprehensive report.

From abstract: Six diamond-core holes totaling 2, 201 feet were drilled by the U. S. Bureau of Mines under contract to the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission at the Old Leyden coal mine, Jefferson County, Colo. The holes were spotted on the basis of geologic mapping by the U. S. Geological survey and were drilled to explore the lateral and downward extent of a uranium-bearing coal and the associated carnotite deposits in the adjacent sandstone. The data obtained from the diamond-core holes helped to explain the geology and structural control of the deposit. The uranium is most abundant in a coal bed that in places has been brecciated by shearing, and then altered to a hard, dense, and silicified rock. From abstract: Pitchblende, associated with base-metal sulfides, has been found at eight localities in the northern part of Jefferson County, Colo., in shear zones that cut pre-Cambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks, chiefly hornblende gneiss, biotite schist, and granite pegmatite. The pitchblende deposits, with one exception, are in major shear zones that contain vein-like bodies of carbonate-rich breccia. The breccia bodies range from 1 to 5 feet in thickness and are related probably to the Laramide faults, or "breccia reefs" of similar trend, mapped by Lovering and Goddard (1950).
