Tests of a centering spring used as an artificial feel device on the elevator of a fighter airplane

Report presenting tests to investigate the use of a simple centering spring, which had no variation of force gradient with impact pressure, as an artificial feel device for the elevator control of a fighter airplane. Testing was conducted using a Chance Vought F4U-4B airplane equipped with power controls. Results regarding the force experienced and effects of the feel system are provided.

Experimental investigation of effects of moderate sideslip on the flow fields near a 45 degree swept-wing-fuselage combination at low speed (open access)

Experimental investigation of effects of moderate sideslip on the flow fields near a 45 degree swept-wing-fuselage combination at low speed

The flow fields near a 45 degree swept-wing-fuselage combination at moderate angles of sideslip (plus-or-minus 8 degrees), as determined experimentally at low speed, are presented as variations with chordwise distance for various spanwise and vertical locations and angles of attack. The results indicated that for positions close to the fuselage (on and near the plane of symmetry) changes in the angle of sideslip caused large changes in the flow-field characteristics and particularly in the local angles of sideslip, which in some cases were nearly double the static angle of sideslip.

A flight evaluation of the longitudinal stability characteristics associated with the pitch-up of a swept-wing airplane in maneuvering flight at transonic speeds (open access)

A flight evaluation of the longitudinal stability characteristics associated with the pitch-up of a swept-wing airplane in maneuvering flight at transonic speeds

This report presents the results of flight measurements of longitudinal stability and control characteristics made on a swept-wing jet aircraft to determine the origin of the pitch-up encountered in maneuvering flight at transonic speeds. For this purpose measurements were made of elevator angle, tail angle of attack, and wing-fuselage pitching moments (obtained from measurements of the balancing tail loads).

Neutron Economy of Various Converter Reactor Designs

The following report determines how many neutrons are being absorbed in various converter reactor designs, how many neutrons leak from the reactor and the breakdown between fast and thermal leakage. Another interest this paper examines is to determine how many neutrons are absorbed in thorium in the resonance region, at thermal energy, and in the blanket.

The Metabolism of Chyle Cholesterol in the Rat (open access)

The Metabolism of Chyle Cholesterol in the Rat

Abstract: "Observations on the metabolism of chyle cholesterol in the rat show that exogenous cholesterol entering the systemic circulation in chyle exists in lipoproteins of low density (including chylomicrons) migrating with a high Sf rate (i.e.>400) in the ultracentrifuge. Following entry into the systemic circulation these molecules are rapidly removed from the plasma. This "clearing" of serum chyle cholesterol is a tissue phenomenon, the liver being the predominant site. Within the liver the chyle cholesterol esters are at least partially hydrolyzed; hydrolysis apparently does not occur in the plasma to any appreciable extent. After its entry into the liver exogenous cholesterol, if normally metabolized, presumably mixes with and becomes indistinguishable from cholesterol produced by endogenous synthesis."

Effect of Temperature on Uranium Recovery Columns Operation

Some data on the temperature effect in pulse columns are reviewed. New data obtained with the "vibrational" stirrer are reported. The effects on both the dispersion and coalescence and the net rate of extraction suggest that improved operation of the RA column and lowered waste losses would be expected at elevated temperatures.

Wind-Tunnel Tests of a Model of a Wingless Fin-Controlled Missile to Obtain Static Stability and Control Characteristics Through a Range of Mach Numbers From 0.5 to 0.88

"An investigation at medium to high subsonic speeds has been conducted in the Langley low-turbulence pressure tunnel to determine the static stability and control characteristics and to measure the fin normal forces and moments for a model of a wingless fin-controlled missile. With the horizontal-fin deflection limited to a maximum of 6 degrees, longitudinally stable and trimmed flight could not be maintained beyond an angle of attack of 17 degrees for a Mach number of 0.88 and beyond 20 degrees for a Mach number of 0.50 for any center-of-gravity location without the use of some auxiliary stability or control device such as jet vanes" (p. 1).

The Less Familiar Elements in the Atomic Energy Program (open access)

The Less Familiar Elements in the Atomic Energy Program

Many factors are responsible for the rapid growth of analytical chemistry during the past ten to fifteen years. One of the most important of these factors is the greatly increased significance to present day chemistry of many elements that in the recent past were principally chemical curiosities. Since the Atomic Energy program is concerned with many such elements, it is of interest to discuss the cause for this concern and the resulting effect on the field of analytical chemistry. A number of pertinent analytical research problems at Hanford will be cited as examples.

Elastic Solution for the Thermal Stresses in a Finite Solid Cylinder Fuel Element (open access)

Elastic Solution for the Thermal Stresses in a Finite Solid Cylinder Fuel Element

The heat generated by reactor fuel elements create thermal gradiants which cause thermal stresses of considerable magnitude. An elastic solution for these thermal stresses can be calculated with the equations given in Timoshenko's and Goodier's book (1) on elasticity if the fuel element is assumed infinite in length. An exact elastic solution for a finite cylindrical fuel element is given in this report in order to evaluate the effects of fuel element length on the thermal stresses and the effects of having the free end material distorting the end closure.

Preliminary investigation at subsonic and transonic speeds of the aerodynamic characteristics of a biplane composed of a sweptback and a sweptforward wing joined at the tips

Report presenting an investigation at subsonic and transonic speeds of the aerodynamic characteristics of a wing-body configuration designated as a swept biplane, which is composed of a sweptback and sweptforward wing joined at the tips. Results indicate that the plan form prevents the abrupt pitch-up normally encountered on monoplane swept wings. Results regarding subsonic tests, transonic tests, and some additional design considerations are provided.
