A Volumetric Method for the Determination of Lithium (open access)

A Volumetric Method for the Determination of Lithium

From introduction: "It has become desirable to develop an alternative method for the determination of lithium to serve as a stand-by method at times when the flame photometer is inoperative, or to supplement the latter in cases where a doubtful analysis requires further investigation. A method based upon the precipitation of lithium with potassium ferriperiodate was investigated because of its expected freedom from interference by aluminum."

The Cloverleaf Cyclotron Three Phase Radiofrequency System (open access)

The Cloverleaf Cyclotron Three Phase Radiofrequency System

The geometry of the magnetic pole structure in the cloverleaf cyclotron suggests the use of three dees excited by three phase rf placed in the valleys out of the way of the beam. Experience with the model machines indicates that it is desirable to be able to vary the phase angles between the three dee voltages through 30 or 40 degrees and to be able to maintain them at any given value within plus or minus one degree. It is desirable, also, to be able to vary the phase angle independently of the amplitude of the dee voltages. There are several possible ways of meeting these requirements. The one which was chosen appears to be the most flexible and to best meet the problems presented by the center geometry of the machine.

Calculation of Transport Cross-Sections of Uranium (open access)

Calculation of Transport Cross-Sections of Uranium

In recent months, experiments investigating the total, non-elastic, transport, etc., cross-sections of U-238 have been performed. It is the purpose of this memo to examine these data and to obtain from them information which will be of use in refinements pile calculations. In cases, e.g. transport cross-sections, where experimental data do not suffice, the theory developed pertaining to the continuum model of the nucleus has been depended upon. One of the fundamental requirements of this model is that the spacings of the energy levels in the compound nucleus are small compared to their widths and that consequently many levels are excited by the incoming particles. As a result there are many more modes of decay and the continuum model is an average over these levels.

Electroplates on Thorium

Abstract: "The protection of thorium in hot water was studied. Copper electrocladding on thorium offers promising protection against hot water. The corrosion of thorium in 95 C water was reduced appreciably by a thorium phosphate film. The results of this abbreviated investigation offer a basis for the development of a method of protecting thorium at elevated temperatures in corrosive media."

Double Crystal X-Ray Spectrometer for Study of Irradiated Materials (open access)

Double Crystal X-Ray Spectrometer for Study of Irradiated Materials

For some time, the need has been recognized for an X-ray diffraction unit applicable to studies concerning the crystallographic characteristics of pile irradiated materials. Except for studies involving specimens of low activity, it has been impossible in the past to investigate materials which emit intense beta and gamma radiations. The exact type and degree of irradiation damage to high activity materials has been largely a matter of theoretical conjecture. The object of this report is to describe an X-ray diffraction spectrometer that can be used to collect crystallographic data from irradiated materials.

Passage of Electrons Through Matter

Self-Shielding Measurements in PPA-20

From Introduction: "The self-shielding characteristics of a number of absorbers and of U-235 and U-238 have been investigated in PPA-20 (66°). Most of the measurements have been made in Ring 3 at the core mid-plane. The foil doubling technique was employed. Particular attention was given to 'thin' foil regions for the purpose of extrapolating the data to zero thickness."
