Blue Stem Mixture with Blue Grama

Photograph of native grass planting made in the spring of 1958. Grass consisted of a bluestem mixture with heavy addition of blue grama and some buffalo. It was shredded in June to control weeds and Johnson grass growth. This is a good stand of grass but the Johnson grass competition is heavy.

Brush Control

Photograph of oak and blackjack timber sprayed in the spring of 1957. The kill looks fair but will need retreatment. The grass growth is good in the sprayed area and has been deferred from grazing. The brush was sprayed by airplane with 2-4-5-T and land owner was assisted under the ACP program.

Extra Blue Grama Added to the Mix

Photograph of a 1957 Soil Bank planting of a native bluestem grass mixture. The mixture had an extra amount of blue grama added. A good stand was present in May of 1957 and this photo shows a good cover now developing. There is a good stand now but it will need shredding or mowing next June to eliminate weed competition.

Farm Pond

Photograph of a farm pond built in the spring of 1958 was rebuilt over an existing pond that had broken. Existing pond was not built large enough to fully utilize site and it was necessary and to use additional time and money to build pond as it should have been done in the irst place. Weeds and grass in pond show old mud flat of previous pond.

Farm Pond Construction

Photograph of farm pond construction showing how the base of the pond is cleared off and the soil is pushed up to the back side. This top soil will be pushed up to the top and back sides of the 3:1 slope on the pond. This will aid in controlling erosion and will make establishment of a vegetative cover much easier. This type construction is required in the Jefferson County Soil Conservation District.
