LULAC News, Volume 22, Number 12, June 1955. This publication contains information relating to LULAC activities and news affecting the LULAC community. On page 14 of this publication, there is a feature of John J. Herrera titled "John J. Herrera direct descendant of Texas Hero." The article is a single column and shows a picture of John J. Herrera at the San Jacinto monument laying down a wreath in honor of the "great contribution that was made by the Latin Americans of Mexican descent in winning the Independence of Texas." According to the article, Herrera was part of the Sons of the Republic of Texas due to his relation to "Pedro Herrera, who fought at San Jacinto, Blas Herrera of Bear County in San Antonio, who was a scout for Sam Houston, and Fransisco Ruiz, alcalde (mayor) of San Antonio during the Texas Revolution, and one of the two native Texas who signed the declaration of Independence."
