Caption: "Pottawatomie county's "cross-country" bridge was lowered into place across the North Canadian river Monday - but not without some extra trouble. Workmen found that the pillings were about 12 inches too short. But that didn't stop them long. They just hooked up a winch on each pilling in turn and yanked them up until the bridge would fit its new home. Here is the bridge in place and ready for business. The 26-year-old structure was moved March 7 from a site 17 miles away."

Cook's plea for mercy came through his court-appointed attorneys, Gomer Smith sr. and John Connolly jr., when they brought their client before Federal Judge Stephens S. Chandler. They asked that his trail "not be a Roman holiday where prisoners were thrown to the lions for the enjoyment of the populace."
