A Comparative Study of the Retirement and Survivors Benefits under the Proposed Social Security Amendment, as Amended in House Bill 6000, and under the Texas Teacher Retirement System (open access)

A Comparative Study of the Retirement and Survivors Benefits under the Proposed Social Security Amendment, as Amended in House Bill 6000, and under the Texas Teacher Retirement System

The problem of this study is to compare the retirement benefits under the federal Social Security System, as proposed in House Bill 6000, the retirement benefits under the Texas Teachers Retirement System, and the retirement annuities of private insurance companies. Further, the study will compare the survivors benefits under the proposed Social Security amendment and under the Texas Teacher Retirement System. Last, the study will compare the general nature and principles of the proposed Social Security amendment with those of the Texas Teacher Retirement System.

A Comparison Between Reading and Listening in Comprehension and Retention of Certain Language Concepts in the Third Grade

This thesis compares reading verses listening comprehension in third grade students. The problem under consideration is to determine whether it is easier for a third-grade child to understand a given meaning when that meaning is presented to him in spoken words than it is when the meaning is presented in printed words,

Comparison of the Experimental Pressure Distribution on an NACA 0012 Profile at High Speeds With That Calculated by the Relaxation Method

Note presenting pressure-distribution measurements made on a 5-inch-chord NACA 0012 airfoil at zero angle of attack in the Langley rectangular high-speed tunnel, a 4- by 18-inch closed-throat tunnel, and compared with results calculated by Emmons for an equivalent airfoil-channel configuration by using the relaxation method.

Contribution to the Problem of Buckling of Orthotropic Plates, With Special Reference to Plywood (open access)

Contribution to the Problem of Buckling of Orthotropic Plates, With Special Reference to Plywood

Planar stress-strain relations and bending stress-strain relations are presented for elastic orthotropic plates and specialized to plywood. These relations are used to derive the differential equation and energy expression for the buckling of orthotropic rectangular plates whose principal stiffness directions are not parallel to the plate edges. Buckling analyses are made for the case of pure compression and pure shear of a long plate-strip.

Density fields around a sphere at Mach numbers 1.30 and 1.62 (open access)

Density fields around a sphere at Mach numbers 1.30 and 1.62

From Summary: "Interferograms were taken of the flow around a sphere at Mach numbers of 1.30 and 1.62. The results of the evaluation of these interferograms are shown as plots of contours of constant density ratio in the flow field around the sphere and as the distribution of flow variables along the axis of symmetry between the shock wave and the sphere. In appendixes the theory of the analysis is reviewed, sources of error are discussed, and the detailed procedure used in the evaluation of interferograms is described."

Dependence of the Elastic Strain Coefficient of Copper on the Pre-Treatment (open access)

Dependence of the Elastic Strain Coefficient of Copper on the Pre-Treatment

The effect of various pre-treatments on the elastic strain coefficient (alpha) (defined as the reciprocal of the modulus of elasticity E) (Epsilon) and on the mechanical hysteresis of copper has been investigated. Variables comprising the pre-treatments were pre-straining by stretching in a tensile testing machine and by drawing through a die, aging at room and elevated temperatures and annealing. The variation of the elastic strain coefficient with test stress was also investigated.

The Development of the Oil Industry in Cooke County (open access)

The Development of the Oil Industry in Cooke County

"This paper is the result of a study of the oil industry in Cooke County Texas. Consideration was given to the following factors: the physiography and geology of Cooke County, the first oil developments, opening of various fields, the Tydal Refinery, and the benefits of the oil industry to the county in terms of employment, busines establishments, schools, and social efforts. Both persona and documentary source were utilized for obtaining data on the present problem. Primary sources included statements made by land owners of Cooke County, oil operators, drillers, refinery personnel, business men, civic leaders, and the superintendents of schools, both in Gainesville, Texas, and in Cooke County. Secondary sources included newspapers, oil publications, and books on geology and the oil industry. "-- leaf vi.

The Economic Development of the Rio Grande Plain (open access)

The Economic Development of the Rio Grande Plain

The study of the economic development of the Rio Grande Plain has been divided into the following seven chapters: (1) Physical Aspects of the Rio Grande Plain, (2) Grazing, (3) Development of Farming, (4) Development of Transportation, (5) Growth of Major Urban Centers, (6) Development of Natural Resources, and (7) Present Trends. In each chapter except Chapters I and VII, effort has been made to locate the origin of that particular industry and trace its development. In order to understand the development in the raising of livestock, farming, transportation, natural resources, and the growth of major cities of the region, it would be well to understand the physical aspects of the region.

The Economic Development of the Texas Panhandle (open access)

The Economic Development of the Texas Panhandle

"From the time the first settlers arrived in any region to the present time, numerous changes in their economic life occurred. In the thirty-eight counties of the Texas Panhandle and upper plains, these changes have occurred in rapid order; for in only the past seventy-five years (1875-1950), this region has progressed from one of buffalo hunters to businessmen, through intervening stages of cowboys, "nesters," farmers, and "dust eaters." The purpose of this study is to evaluate each step, thereby enabling the reader to gain a general knowledge as to what the economic situation in the panhandle is based upon today. The area to be studied is composed of the seven northern tiers of counties in the Panhandle and upper plains of Texas. These seven tiers contain thirty-eight counties with an approximate are of 23,491,840 acres. The western part of the Panhandle is located on the Great Plains, or High Plains, while about a third of the area is situated in the North Central Plains. " -- leaf 1.
