Smith's Irrigated Pasture and Cattle

Dallis grass [sic], 3 lbs. southern smooth brome, 2 lbs. white Dutch clover, and 1 lbs. alfalfa per acre. Grazing started April 1950, with 38 acre pasture grazed with 76 steers of medium to low quality. Produced 650 lbs. beef per acre in 10 months. Pasture watered on an 18 to 24 day schedule. Pasture netted Smith over $100 per acre the first year. After pay $0.24 and $0.26 for steers and selling them at a $0.02 to $0.03 loss. The 2X, 18, and 20 soil on which pasture planted netted operator more money than cotton in adjacent 2 and 2X soil that made approximately 1.9 bales of cotton per acre. Smith is putting seventy-five additional acres to irrigated pastures this year."
