The back of the photograph proclaims, “Gully Erosion. Gully that is endangering cropland. Mr. Widney uses alfalfa in his conservation crop rotation. This was seeded in the fall of 1952. For a nurse crop, ½ bushel of wheat per acre cross-drilled in wide spaced rows (every other row drilled). Wheat made 20 bushels per acre. Utilization of alfalfa has been spring hay crop, seed crop in the summer, and fall pasture. He has another planting of alfalfa and plans to plow this one up in the fall. His plans are for the alfalfa to be in a 3-year rotation. He has been a soil conservation district cooperator since 1948. OK-279-10.
